So this has been.my favorite song of OTEP's since it came out in 2004, and I always thought it was a song about a child's narrative of suffering in an abusive Christian home. But now that I am revisiting the lyrics, I am seeing something totally new.
This song could be gospel of John but from the perspective of Jesus.
Jesus was NOT having a good time up to and during the crucifixion. Everyone in the known world at the time looked to him with fear, admiration or disgust and he was constantly being asked questions. He spoke in "verses, prophesies and curses". He had made an enemy of the state, and believed the world was increasingly wicked and fallen from grace, or that he was in the "mouth of madness".
The spine of atlas is the structure that allows the titan to hold the world up. Jesus challenged the state and in doing so became a celebrated resistance figure. It also made him public enemy #1.
All of this happened simply because he was doing his thing, not because of any agenda he had or strategy.
And then he gets scourged (storm of thorns)
There are some plot holes here but I think it's an interesting interpretation.
Cut the rain, we two have swallowed trust
And you have changed
And I, I didn't change enough
And some have said,
That true loves something we are sure of
My only hope lies in your being confused
With all you said, I would wait one hundred summers
Just once again to be with you
On Monday evening, the cloudy skies
On two for Tuesday, I wanted to die
And so you love me, sometimes I find
But you only need me till the darkness takes the sun
Away from me, I've lost you
Away from me, I've lost you
Away from me, I've lost you
Away from me
I saw a silver sun
I wanted it to touch everyone
You have an arm to pull me back
But theres no way that I can give this up
Some other way, theres got to be another
Some other way, there has to be another
Some other way, theres got to be another way
We all are scientists who will not be afraid
I'm not saying that theres no hope for this
And you have tried to change my mind
But we all know, our systems broken
And I, I'll never vote again
And you have changed
And I, I didn't change enough
And some have said,
That true loves something we are sure of
My only hope lies in your being confused
With all you said, I would wait one hundred summers
Just once again to be with you
On Monday evening, the cloudy skies
On two for Tuesday, I wanted to die
And so you love me, sometimes I find
But you only need me till the darkness takes the sun
Away from me, I've lost you
Away from me, I've lost you
Away from me, I've lost you
Away from me
I saw a silver sun
I wanted it to touch everyone
You have an arm to pull me back
But theres no way that I can give this up
Some other way, theres got to be another
Some other way, there has to be another
Some other way, theres got to be another way
We all are scientists who will not be afraid
I'm not saying that theres no hope for this
And you have tried to change my mind
But we all know, our systems broken
And I, I'll never vote again

I am often amazed at the submarines ability to write exactly what it is I am feeling.
If you read their story on their website it explains alot about the songs and makes the meaning alot clearer.
