Lyrics for Rosetta Stoned as interpreted by Solarius

Rosetta Stoned Lyrics
All righty then... picture this if you will...
10 to 2 am, X, yogi DMT, and a box of krispy kreme's in my "need to know" pose just outside of area 51, contemplating the whole chosen people thingy when just then a flaming stealth banana split the sky like one would hope but never really expect to see in a place like this. Cutting right angle donuts on a dime and stopping right at my birkinstocks, and me yelping "holy fuckin' shit!"

then the X file being, looking like some kinda blue green Jackie chan, with Isabella Rossellini lips, and breath that reeked of vanilla chig champa, did a slow mo matrix decent outta the butt end of the banana vessel, and hovered above my bug eyes, my gaping jaw, and my sweaty L. Ron Hubbard upper lip and all I could think was, "I hope uncle martin here doesn't notice that I pissed my fuckin pants!!"

so light in his way, like an apparition, that he had me crying out...
"fuck me! It's gotta be the dead head chemistry. (the) blotter got right on top o' me. Got me seeing E mutha fuckin T!

and after calming me down with some orange slices and some fetal spooning, E.T. revealed to me his singular purpose. He said. "you are the chosen one. The one who will deliver the message. A message of hope for those who choose to hear it, and a warning for those who do not." Me! The chosen one. They chose me!!!! And I didn't even graduate from fuckin' high school!!

Then he looked right through me with somniferous almond eyes. Don't even know what that means. Must remember to write it down.
This is so real. Like the time Dave floated away. See, my heart is pounding. cuz this shit never happens to me.
Can't breathe right now.

It was so real. Like I woke up in wonderland. all sorta terrifying. I don't wanna be alone while I tell this story.
And can anyone tell me why y'all sound like peanuts parents?
Will I ever be coming down?
This is so real. Finally it's my lucky day See, my heart is racing cuz this shit never happens to me.
Can't breathe right now.

You believe me don't you? Please believe what I've just said. See, the dead ain't touring and this wasn't all in my head. see they took me by the hand and invited me right in. then they showed me something. I don't even know where to begin.

Strapped down to my bed, feet cold and eyes red.
I'm out of my head am I alive? Am I dead.
Can't remember what they said. God damn. Shit the bed.
Overwhelmed as one would be placed in my position...
Such a heavy burden now to be the one
Born to bear and bring to all the details of our ending.
to write it down for all the world to see.
But I forgot my pen. Shit the bed again. Typical.

Strapped down to my bed, feet cold and eyes red.
I'm out of my head am I alive? Am I dead.
Sun kissed and Sudafed Gyro scopes and infrared
won't help. I'm brain dead. Can't remember what they said.
God damn. Shit the bed.

Can't remember what they said to me.
Can't remember what they said to make me out to be the hero.
Can't remember what they said.
Bob help me.
Can't remember what they said.

We don't know and we won't know.
God damn shit the bed.

I think that the song is supposed to be ironic. The "alien" encounter the "chosen one" in the song is referring to is the band TOOL. Like the "chosen one" us TOOL fans have failed to deliver the message which TOOL has delivered to us. We are the chosen ones in that we have been chosen, by listening to their music, to pass on the band's message. I think this interpretation is absolutely dead right, esp. considering the fact that Maynard has said in several interviews that the album is meant to convey deep anger with the fact that no one has listened to what theyve said; they feel frustrated that so many people listen to their music but have no acted on what they have learned.

Alrighty then...
So far I agree with everyone, even those who are arguing with one another. It's the fact that so many different interpretations can be made from the one song/album that makes Tool & their work so freakin sweet! Anyway here's my interpretation:
So far the big debate is whether or not Dave (the guy in the song) is tripping balls or really did contact 'extra dimensional beings' but there is a third possibility i.e. he's gone insane. There's no doubt that Dave has had waaaaaaaay too much acid, a box of Krispy Kreme's worth if I'm not mistaken. The obliviousness of his situation i.e. not realising he's eaten acid laced donuts (a whole box worth OMGWTFBBQ!!112) explains why he doen't realise he's tripping and makes the trip even more mentally damaging.
Anyway back to my point, (if I ever had one) the section where E.T tells Dave that he is the 'Chosen One' who will deliver 'The Message' undoubtedly stands out in the track but there's more to this part than just aliens & drugs. When you consider the Messianic delusions that are common with Schizophrenia and the fine line between religion and madness in general, it seems that Dave's seemingly spiritual epxerience could be the result of him developing a full blown psychosis.
It is well known that some people who take enough acid can trip out so much that they don't come back to reality ever. Detatchement from reality is essentially what psychosis is so Dave has definately done some permanent damage to his noggin, even if he ever comes down.
Another interesting theory is that the song seems to have three distinct themes: Aliens/EDBs, hallucanigens and psychosis. This could correlate with the three scripts of the Rosetta Stone !WOW!
As for the LSD/DMT debate; Dave is on acid (among other things maybe) but if you add up the length of "Lipan Conjuring", "Lost Keys" and "Rosetta Stoned" it amounts to approximately 15 minutes. Hmm... Keep in mind that if you do listen to these tracks on DMT I won't be held responsible :P
Finally, shitting the bed seems to have more significance than just failure. They say that the last thing you do before you die is shit yourself (if you're packing that is.) The final part of the song conveys the feeling of shitting one's self (It did to me... ahem...) Anyway it's possible that Dave dies at the end of the song thus shitting himself at the last moment- end of song. This ties in to the the theme of death that the whole album conveys.

Don't forget your pen.

nonetospeakof has definitely come up with a good interpretation that makes sense. after listening to the song the first few times i thought that Maynard was being an arrogant smart-ass with the lines that start with 'overwhelmed at one would be...' Then after reading the lyrics i thought that perhaps it is a song about someone who wakes up in the middle of the night and starts snacking because he is high, then gets abducted by aliens (in his mind or in reality, that doesn't really matter). As long as each person that likes the song comes up with their own interpretation and meaning, then, well, thats all the band really wants anyhow...leaving lyrics open to interpretation so a song means a lot of different things to a lot of different people. peace out...

I've seen that in this song there's a part where Danny is playing in 5 with his feet and 6 with his hands at the same time, but I can't figure out where it is. Does anyone know what part of the song this is in?

since this album is about his mom, i believe that the speaker of this song is supposed to be maynard. i think that maynard was visited by angles, which he mistakes for aliens. the angles showed him heaven, which is why he asks "will i ever be coming down". then he says "this is so real, like the time they floated away". this means that his moms spirit floated away twice. once when she got paralyzed and then when she died. in the song, he's re-living the expirence of when she died. then he's supposed to tell the peolpe who talked shit about his mom in The Pot, but they dont believe him.

This track begins with "Alrighty then", which was a repeated line in the Ace Ventura movies. This makes me believe this song might be a comment on Jim Carrey as an actor, or on his career in general. Jim is a noted fan of heavy/death metal.

Just like the protagonist in this song, Carrey never finished high school. The song alludes to the possible existence of aliens, and mr. Carrey played an alien in Earth Girls Are Easy. "You believe me don't you?/Please believe what I just said" is probably a reference to Liar Liar. Many Tool songs are thought to carry comments on religion, and Jim played the main character in Bruce Almighty. Last year Jim portrayed a character called Dick, and Tool have a song called Maynard's Dick.

As a way of thanking Tool for writing a song about him, Jim Carrey have now signed up for a film called The Number 23 - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0481369/

What the hell? Jim Carrey?

Lost Keys (Blame Hofmann)

Obvious allusion to Dr. Hofmann who created LSD. Lost Keys I assume is meaning that whatever the aliens told him was very important and he has lost it because he was on acid when the aliens came to him.

I love the subtle humor in the song.

hmm, watever this song means, its definately not about DMT! That drugs takes u out of ur body for days in ur mind, which is only 10 minutes in real time... then ur normal again. More likely based on LSD hallucentions I reckon.

not saying if I'm leaning toward DMT or LSD.
I about split on both.
But Rickswims isn't disproving DMT in my opinion.

whether it's DMT or LSD it really doesn't matter. The song tells the story of someone who has destroyed their mind and body through drug abuse and has mistaken this for some kind of enlightenment. I still reckon they die at the end of the song.

When it comes to the lyrics, it's possible that both "Holy f@#&king shit" and "Wachen sie auf" have been superimposed on one another. The more I listen to it, the more it sounds like both. Phenominal track nonetheless.

No they're not superimposed because that part of the song is counted in 5 and "Holy fucking shit" has 5 syllables. If you say it like he does in the song and count it with your hand, it will be like this: ho-ly fuck-ing shit...and the music is counted 1-2-3-4-5 the same way. "Wachen sie auf" only has 4 syllables. It doesn't match.

all of this can be settled because you made on lyrical mistake. i have listen closely to it, and came upon the conclusion this song is about acid. first, Hofmann is the man who is credited to creating acid. second, i believe you mistook "blotter" for "bottom" in the line "The bottom got on top of me" this would make more sense. That is why i think this song is about LSD.

Ego monster, this is definitely a follow up to faaip de oiad.
But what is the exact meaning of the song (besides obvious), and how to use this song to solve the puzzle, thats another story.

It's Definatly about DMT
Number 1. The trippy experience with DMT is often the case that you will see aliens where they will tell you things, the idea that it is good for self-exploration so being told that he is the chosen one is showing he has purpose.
2. The one about death and shitting yourself both connected as well as sometimes you actually 'die' in a DMT trip not really but you think you are dying and sometimes live a true lifetime so that would tie in as well.
3. Shit yourself you do that while on DMT not always but it is quite possible that you will do that or be sick or something same with piss yourself because your body doesnt recognise it as good stuff and feels it needs to get rid of it so it tries to force it out whichever way it can so to speak.

Thank you that's the final definition, also the fact that the song is Rosetta Stoned rather than Alien Experience suggests that it is a drug induced sighting rather than anything else hence the word stoned/

Blindrider,
What I meant was they are superimposed like a round i.e. "row, row, row your boat" I know I seem cracked but bear with me.
First off, take the 5 syllables of HO-LY-FA-KIN-SHI. Next you have the 4 syllables of WA-KEN-SI-OFF (I've mispelt intentionally to write how they sound.) Now this is how i think they fit:

HO-LI-FA-KIN-SHI-HO-LI-FA-KIN-SHI-HO-LI-FA-KIN
WA-KEN-SI-AUUFF-WA-KEN-SI-AUUFF-WA-KEN

Hopefully this comes out okay.

Caramelprisoner, I agree with you and several others who have commented on the "overwhelmed as one would be" part of this song. Musically and lyrically, it grabs me every time. The futility in his voice when he sings that he forgot his pen... that is what it feels like to be tripping (on acid) and start to lose the perspective and insight you found during your trip- everyone does come down sometime, after all. It's a horrible feeling, and I think that's why that anguished, desperate part of this song touches me so.
I was at the 5/13 Chicago show too. It was my birthday and my first Tool show ever. Hearing this song live, at the start of their set- I'll never forget it!
OH YES, before I forget, here's the real lyric from that particular interlude:
"Born to bear in writ to all the details of our ending"
It's bear in writ to all, not bear and read to all. The best source for Tool lyrics is toolshed.down.net.

Yeah Eyeland Baby I feel the same way about that part of the song. I went to the May 4th show in Oakland. It was the best concert I've ever been to, but unfortunatley I didn't know this song yet because I had only had the new album for two days.

In "Rosetta Stoned" when the third verse starts i.e; "After calming me down with some etc.etc" there are 23 guitar notes before E.T reveals the 'Singular Purpose' i.e; "You are the Chosen One. You are to yadaydayada." This ties into the '23 Enigma' of "Viginti Tres" Am I right or am I tripping?
