It's because Tool enjoys putting random stuff on their album (Harry Manback, Die Eir Von Satan, (-) Ions, Faaip de Oiad)
I think it's something they enjoy musically but at the same time like their own style of comedy.

This song was described in a review I saw as "Mantra with spoons". Does it credit I think.

i don't know why these tracks seem to get people so riled up... Tool's been doing these kinds of tracks since Aenima...

i never heard people say things like 'what the fuck, this is bullshit, etc...' to tracks like Ions or Mantra...

I think this solidifies the "black kettle" reference in the previous track, "the pot." Black kettle was a Cheyenne Native Amarican, and while the chant isn't a Cheyenne Native American chant it still makes you look at the Black Kettle lyrics in a different light...But thats just how I saw it.

Danny Carey has been obsessed with the Occult ever since he saw his dad doing a sword dance at 3 in the morning in his back yard. This sounds like tribal chanting to me. Possibly an Occult reference....

This is only 29 seconds, right? Because I listened to the sample of this and that's how long it was.

If this is the song in entirety, let me say this must be one of the most kick-ass (and creepiest) interludes ever.

I'm so going to get this album.

(IMO)I think this short track has something to do with lost keys and rosetta stoned..

The indians used to small doses of what we call "drugs" (like peyote) in their rituals to reach a level of "intense inward reflection."

Lost keys and Rosetta Stoned is about Hoffman creating LSD, and modern society abusing psychedelic drugs to create short periods of pleasure, which they believe they're reaching a level of enlightment, only to become braindead in the end.

actualy, i think lost keys/rosetta stoned is about someone who takes lsd as a shortcut to enlightenment, and they're still on the drug, and they're trying to express how they got there knowing they wont remember when the drug wears off. anyone who's taken lsd or has been around friends taking it will know what im talking about. you get there, then try and send yourself a note or something so you'll remember how to get back wtihout the drug, but it never works out quite as you had hoped.

i'm upset that so many people think its a joke. it sounds to me like a native american mantra or song. obviously. its probably very spiritual and i think that when the guitar and maynard (or whoever) screams it is showing the paralells of the mantra and the music.
