Lyrics for Vicarious as interpreted by DarkAntiCrista

Vicarious Lyrics
Eye on the t.v cuz tragedy thrills me.
Whatever flavor it happens to be.
(like)
Killed by the husband...
drowned by the ocean...
Shot by his own son...
she used a poison in his tea, Then she kissed him goodbye.
That's My kinda story
It's no fun till someone dies.

Don't look at me like I am a monster.
Frown out your one face but with the other you
Stare like a junkie into the t.v.
Stare like a zombie
while the mother holds her child. Watches him die.
Hands to the sky, cryin' "why, oh why?"

Cuz I need to watch things die, from a distance.
Vicariously, I live while the whole world dies.
You all need it too don't lie.

Why can't we just admit it?
We won't give pause till the blood is flowing.
Neither the brave nor bold nor brightest of stories told,
We won't give pause till the blood is flowing.

i need to watch things die, from a good safe distance.
Vicariously, i live while the whole world dies.
you all feel the same so why can't we just admit it?

Blood like rain come down. Drum on grave and ground.
Part Vampire, Part warrior, Carnivore, and Voyeur
Stare at the transmittal. Sing to the death rattle

Credulous at best, your desire to believe in angels in the hearts of men.
Pull your head on out your hippy haze and give a listen.
Shouldn't have to say it all again.
The universe is hostile. so Impersonal. devour to survive.
So it is. So it's always been.

We all feed on tragedy. It's like Blood to a vampire.
vicariously, I live while the whole world dies.
Much better you than i.

Some others have commented that this is a more straightforward song in meaning than Tool's previous songs--hello? "Aenema" anyone? The blatant "f*ck humanity" meaning of that song is just as apparent upon a first listen in that song as the meaning of this new single is easily understandable. That's not a knock, because I think straightforwardness can be potent, as it is in this song.

My favorite line is "The universe is hostile, so impersonal, devour to survive... so it is, so it's always been." He acknowledges this truth in existence and contends we should accept it. He's not the first one to reflect on it but it's always a strong truth.

I agree with thekep1014, that TOOL are equally an amazing part of an awesome band. This song is one of many that has the power to change lives, and not just because of Maynard, they are all amazing.

trexor you want evidence?
track 1 vicatious- you know how it sounds
2- jambi starts with heavy guitar riff/maynar singing slowly
3-wings for marie 1 opens will church bell rhythem
4-wings 2 slow build to maynard singing lowly in rhythem
5-the potmaynard solo to start "who are you to wave your finger"
6-Lipan - chanting
7-lost keys- dr exam
8-rosetta stones- very different song fast talking at beginning
9-Intension- long quiet intro
10-right in 2-slow guitar start
11-viginti-plays with holographic sound (most of the album does this but it comes to a head on this track)

even if it's a "fake" this is still a tool album and a damn good one- after only hearing vicarious I left the possibility open as well, but this collection of songs is new cd quality regardless of what it is or isn't labeled

also one last thing about the album- there are many references both with lyrics and music to old tool songs- I haven't looked at it closely at all, but I think some songs may build off of older songs

It is most definately Tool Trexor... there has been a fake album circulating around, my friend has it. And let me state: omfg it sucks! The one everyone is talking about is authentic. Being a drummer myself, I have followed Danny Carey for quite some time. His rhythmic paterns can be recognized in these songs.

How could you be disappointed with this song? Tool didn't sell out. Maynard sounds awesome on this track and Danny Carey is just a monster on drums. Also, don't download something that hasn't even been released. If you actually downloaded the album and judged it then don't even call yourself a Tool fan. Vicarious, in my opinion, is a damn good song. Anybody who disagrees is an ungrateful bastard. I think you guys expect way too much. If you were a true Tool fan then you would support them 100%.

TREXOR: you really ought to calm the fuck down buddy. There IS a fake Tool album and 10,000 Days is NOT IT!!! What proof do you need, man? Like it or not, the fucking artwork you despise is plastered all over Wal-Mart (May 2nd: the banner reads) and while I could see Maynard & Co. fucking with that "establishment"... they respect their fans enough to NOT string them on some crazy-assed fucked-up conspiracy theory like you're throwing out here on your posts.

After May 2nd, 2006 you're gonna be changing your name to avoid the entire Tool fan-base laughing your ass out the cyber-door. IT IS TOOL and THOSE ARE THE TRACKS that will be on the ALBUM: "10000 DAYS." Just let it fucking go, man. Save what dignity you have left and just LET IT GO. For your sake... you look like (and will be proven) a goddamn fool!!!

Fucking righteous song by the way. Maynard has the best voice in music today and it doesn't matter who's backing him: Tool, APC, Deftones, RATM or even a Kanye West beat... he's gonna sound amazing.

i know its not the right place to post comments on Tool... but...i'm

Quite dissappointed with this one. apparently maynard hasnt shaken off his musings with APC. i can't help but notice a lot of APC residue stuck on this song. (mind you APC are a great band in themselves).

furthermore the song sounds too much like a rehashing of old tool material... try listening to the intro to vicarious and the section in "Pushit" where maynard starts singing "you know that i will choke until i swallow". too similar in rhythm, melody line and syncopation to be a comfort.

what also bothered me was the fact that there wasn't ONE memorable moment on the song. it's very verse chorus verse chorus driven... very very unlike tool.

overall after listening to the 13th step album... esp Vanishing, blue, weak & powerless, and previous albums of tool ... this song turns out to be just an extend arm of the aforementioned. sort of like an unhealthy tumour. an unnecessary corrupted replica of what is healthy.

turning the pages. lyrically speaking, this has to be the weakest, the most two dimensional tool piece. like it or not. maynard has constructed the lyrics upon a very unstable ground. the ground being the word "vicarious". unlike previous tool songs, this piece is just too shallow. don't think i'm just one of those lovers of the "abstruse"... this piece as i've said is too two dimensional. there lacks usage of surrealistic techniques found through most of other tool pieces...

if the remainder of the album flows this way, then i'll be quite dissappointed... i guess artists have their period of "wane"... even tool.

tool only progresses more as they play. this song wasn't, at least personally, as much a disappointment as others see it. as a musician (drummer/pianist), i've used tool for many inspirational paths through music. one thing tool's never been able to do is not impress me. no true fan can truly say that this song didn't impress them, as it shows how much each member has progressed. the lyrics, i must say, were a pain to make out at parts, but it generally flows well.

as for the meaning of this song, from my perspective:
TV (or other medium) all create barriers within us which guard us from "proper" ways of being. this lack of censorship, even through all the censorship, gives us the opportunity to take in what's wrong, and think it's right. it also shows how primitive the human race is, as we're all so interested at the harming (or death) of another, proving how "civilized" we actually are.

as for BrianNeville, and the other arguing this point:
a band is not like britney spears, where we only stare at one person for hours on end. no, tool (and the majority of bands) are bands without a front man. each instrumental is as impressive as the other, each member contributes equally, if not more. true tool fans listen to the music because it is inspirational, and that you can receive influence for nearly any instrument, as we can see with the string tributes. please, don't say something biased unless it's an opinion on the meaning of the song.

and in response to that, yeah, tool would do that to their "fans", because if you don't recognize that this album is bullshit, then you don't understand what qualities tool have and what it is that makes tool tool.

Trexor , I just hope that you are right cause this album kind disapointed me by sounding too similar as lateralus...if TOOL did this, this would be the more elabored musical hoax of all times !!! And it would prove TOOL is definitly a band different from the other ones. So, wait and see..I will listen to 10.000 days for now becasue it's a good album....even if it could have been named Lateralus 1.2 ......

yeah, and the more i research it, the more it makes sense. there's a lot of purpose behind this hoax. for one, they wanted to make a point that the world is not as "vicarious" as it pretends to be. people are numb, they aren't awake. being unable to feel tool is just a small demonstration of that. look at the past tool songs. names like "parabola, lateralus, aenima, schism". names that you could easily draw many philosophical or "spiritual" meanings out of. that can't be said for any of these, except maybe vicarious. it's sad if you look in the song forums. all the comments by people talking about these how great these songs are. they have very little meaning. and they're all too literal for tool. you're right it does sound like lateralus, only worse. i'm even doubting vicarious as a real single, because even though it's the best song on there, i'm sick of it already. i'm expecting something better than zeppelin. and let me ask you all this, does 10,000 days really sound like it would take nearly 5 years to produce? how about a genuine, artistic album, and a massive hoax that points out... probably more than i can even imagine yet.

i'm starting to agree with TREXOR. there is so much out there that points to this being the "decoy album" they made and the real artwork etc being changed at the last minute when the real album is released. these songs are not the usual multi layered excellence of previous albums.
