i’m just a normal boy that sank when i fell overboard
my ship would leave the country but i’d rather swim ashore
without a life-vest i’d be stuck again
wish i was much more masculine
maybe then i could learn to swim like
14 miles away

now floating up and down i spin colliding into sound
like whales beneath me diving down
i’m sinking to the bottom of my
everything that freaks me out
the lighthouse gleam has just run out
i’m cold as cold as cold... can be

I wanna swim away but don’t know how
sometimes it feels just like i’m falling in the ocean
let the waves up... take me down
let the hurricane set in motion
let the rain of what i feel right now come down
let the rain come down

where is the coast guard i keep looking each direction
for a spotlight give me something... i need something for protection
maybe flotsam junk would do just fine
the jetsam sunk i’m left behind
i’m treading for my life believe me how can i keep up this breathing
not knowing how to think... i scream aloud begin to sink
my legs and arms are broken down with envy for the solid ground
i’m reaching for the life within me
how can one man stop his ending...
well i thought of just your face
relaxed and floated into space

i wanna swim away but don’t know how
sometimes it feels just like i’m falling in the ocean
let the waves up... take me down
let the hurricane set in motion
let the rain of what i feel right now come down
let the rain come down

now waking to the sun i calculate what i had done
like jumping from the bow yea
just to prove that i knew how yea
it’s midnights late reminder of
the loss of her the one i love
my will to quickly end it all
sat front row in my need to fall into the ocean end it all
into the ocean end it all

My Interpretation:This song is kind of "emo" even though I really like it. I think it's about a guy who feels like a wimp, unequipped to handle life, but not quite ready to throw in the towel and end his life. He is basically crying for help. He's helpless. He isn't quite sure what he wants, but he knows he can't stay where he is.

My Interpretation:I think this song is about life. He falls into life after you grow up and leave home. He is describing a feeling of being lost in an ocean, he wishes he had support or strength to escape. The ship is moving away from his old life, but he just wants to go back. In this confusion and loss, he contemplates suicide as a way to stop it, because he can't make it alone.

General Comment:What a wonderful song. This song got me hooked on Blue October. The suicide subject is a touchy one for song writers, and Justin clearly deals with some issues himself, but I love the way he he makes a song here with an empowering and encouraging message but still keeps the beat smooth and silk so you don't necessarily have to be in that frame of mind to enjoy it. That watery undertone just feels so right, and Justin's vocals sound great with it. I recommend this song to most of anyone.

General Comment:"fourteen miles away" always bugs me because to me it seems theres a deeper meaning to it that I can never figure out. i've heard "fourteen miles away" referenced in other songs before like in Bush's "greedy fly". what does it mean? D:

Song Meaning:*DISCLAIMER* I have just obtained a copy of Justin Furstenfeld's book Crazy Making. It's not very detailed, but it contains all the lyrics to all current (The Answers - Approaching Normal) Blue October songs, and his inspiration behind them. As I said, it's not very detailed, but it's his words on every Blue October song that is in the book. I know everyone interprets a song differently from everyone else, but having the original intent behind the song will be helpful to people who don't fully understand a song. Also, any grammatical errors are not made by me, I'm putting down Justin's words exactly how he writes them. So yea... enjoy :)

Song Meaning:Everything seems to be going wrong, in his life. Bad timing of events if I had to guess…If you want to interpret this literally then yes I can see where some people are getting a suicidal vibe, but the reference to “14 miles away” leads me to believe that he is just lost and needs answers. (Well at least that is how I interpret “14 miles away”.) My guess is that he fell in love with a girl and he really wanted to be with her, but he had to tell her he that they couldn’t be together. After the fact he feels lost and broken because he regrets his choice and he feels like he can’t get her back. If I was the girl he was singing about, I would tell him that I want to be with him too, but I understand why things wouldn’t work out. And that just because he couldn’t be in a romantic relationship with me, there was still no reason to push me away. Friendship is the key to any kind of relationship and being friends can always turn into something more later on in life. And I would also tell him that I would never let him be alone; I won’t let him drown. Actually I might have him listen to the song “Whispers In the Dark” by Skillet. That’s what I’d do.

General Comment:This song means so much to me, it's helped me through so many rough times and helped me stop doing a lot of things.......Justin has been struggling with Bipolar depression, drugs, etc. It's about feeling overwhelmed and struggling....like you're drowning, fighting to stay afloat and to stay above the surface.
I WANNA SWIM AWAY BUT DON'T KNOW HOW- He doesnt know how to get away, to make it stop
"Into the ocean, end it all" means like giving up, end it all....maybe suicide?

"it's midnight's late reminder of..the loss of her, the one i love" Nightmares? SOunds like he's having a nightmare by the way he says "Midnight's late reminder"

Definately one of my all time favorites. such raw emotion . I love Blue October :D
