Lyrics for Into the Ocean as interpreted by seanfromlj

Into the Ocean Lyrics
i’m just a normal boy that sank when i fell overboard
my ship would leave the country but i’d rather swim ashore
without a life-vest i’d be stuck again
wish i was much more masculine
maybe then i could learn to swim like
14 miles away

now floating up and down i spin colliding into sound
like whales beneath me diving down
i’m sinking to the bottom of my
everything that freaks me out
the lighthouse gleam has just run out
i’m cold as cold as cold... can be

I wanna swim away but don’t know how
sometimes it feels just like i’m falling in the ocean
let the waves up... take me down
let the hurricane set in motion
let the rain of what i feel right now come down
let the rain come down

where is the coast guard i keep looking each direction
for a spotlight give me something... i need something for protection
maybe flotsam junk would do just fine
the jetsam sunk i’m left behind
i’m treading for my life believe me how can i keep up this breathing
not knowing how to think... i scream aloud begin to sink
my legs and arms are broken down with envy for the solid ground
i’m reaching for the life within me
how can one man stop his ending...
well i thought of just your face
relaxed and floated into space

i wanna swim away but don’t know how
sometimes it feels just like i’m falling in the ocean
let the waves up... take me down
let the hurricane set in motion
let the rain of what i feel right now come down
let the rain come down

now waking to the sun i calculate what i had done
like jumping from the bow yea
just to prove that i knew how yea
it’s midnights late reminder of
the loss of her the one i love
my will to quickly end it all
sat front row in my need to fall into the ocean end it all
into the ocean end it all

This song is absolutely beautiful. The tune, the words. It's wonderful. I think the song maens what is said. I don't think there's a whole lot of hidden meaning behind it.

The lyrics are wrong. In the second stanza, they should be:

Without a life vest, I'd be stuck again
Wish I was much more masculine
Maybe then I could learn to swim
Like 'fourteen miles away'

Then at the beginning of the second verse they should be:

Where is the coast guard?
I keep looking each direction
For a spotlight, give me something
I need something for protection
Maybe flotsam junk will do just fine
The jetsam sunk, I'm left behind
I'm treading for my life believe me
(How can I keep up this breathing?)

The use (correct use, I might point out) of flotsam and jetsam shows you just how much goes into one of Justin's songs. Flotsam is the debris left over after a shipwreck (Maybe he can salvage a piece of this mess and save himself?) and Jetsam is everything that was thrown off of a ship while trying to keep it afloat (In this case, he was jettisoned along with the rest and now it's all gone and only he is left).

At a Blue October show in Houston, Justin introduced this song with a story about taking a cruise. He said that one night he had gone to the bow of the ship and contemplated what would happen if he were to jump? Would anyone even notice? Then he said, "Y'all would notice." The crowd screamed so loud you'd think the walls would fall in. Then he said, "Y'all give me a reason to live."
And the crowd got twice as loud.
It was, without a doubt, the most amazing live performance in the history of music. I'm sure you're thinking Mozart rocked the house, or the Beatles at Shea was more impressive (and unlike The Stones at Altamont, nobody got stabbed), but I'm telling you anyone that saw Blue October that night in Houston will swear it was the greatest show ever.
Toward the end of the night, Justin asked the crowd, "If you had to, could you support my weight?" The deafening response was YES!

He climbed off the stage, up on the first row (all standing) and crowd surfed clear to the back of the house where he was turned around and sent back to the stage (he never dipped once, not even a little). And when he grabbed the microphone, he explained that he hadn't done that since he was sixteen.

I'm serious, "The Best Show Ever"

Thanks for updating the lyrics. I still say using flotsam and jetsam is extremely clever.

awesome song. Great imagery. I imagined that he used the falling into the ocean as falling into depression, drug use, whatever. Then being given a reason to live, a reason to try to swim.

I believe...

"My will to quickly end it all
So thought no end my need to fall"

Is wrong, I sounds more like...

"My will to quickly end it all
Set front row in my need to fall"

This song made more sense to me after I listened to "Hate Me." Near the end, when he says;

"I calculate what I had done
Like jumping from the bow (yeah)
Just to prove I knew how (yeah)
It's midnight's late reminder of
The loss of her, the one I love
My will to quickly end it all"

It seems he's regretting his choice to tell the person he loves to leave for her own good, but he knows there's no going back. He made bad choices in his life, but now he regrets them. He tries to go back

"I want to swim away but don't know how"

but he realizes that he either he pushed everyone who could help away or they left him. Now he's all alone. In the end, he realizes his hopeless fate and then just gives up.

"Let the rain of what I feel right now come down
Let the rain come down

Into the ocean (goodbye) end it all (goodbye)"

It's sad in the middle when he regrets his actions, but it gets lighter towards the end as recognizes his decisions and fades away. I really like this song because of the dynamic emotions involved. It's one of my favorites.

At lollapalooza while introducing this song justin said that this was a story about a man that went on a cruise and jumped off the front but just before he hit the water he thought of everyone he was leaving behind. He suddenly regreted his decision to jump but could do nothing.

Its really self explanitory what it means... everyone at one point thinks... "What if I ended it all right now? Would people really care all that much"

I just thing the lines; "Let the rain of what I feel right now come down
Let the rain come down". I like how he says rain instead of weight. You know exactly what he means, but its.. I don't know, weird?

His voice though... damn

This song makes me listen. It really speaks to me in so many different ways that you'll have to ask me on myspace (myspace.com/seethermania999) to find out all of the ways. It is too confusing for this forum and this site.
Anyways, I love the violins in the song and I love the way the lead vocalist pours his heart out!!!! Great song!!

I think its a good song... "Wish I was much more masculine /
Maybe then I could learn to swim" means that you think things would be better in your life if you were tougher, cooler, whatever, but really they wouldn't. "I thought of just your face," IMO is his life flashing before your eyes before you die, which means that the person is the only good thing in his life.

Flotsam and Jetsam are the names of the eels in the little mermaid. I wonder if that's where he came up with those names??

floatsam is "the part of the wreckage of a ship and its cargo found floating on the water."
and
jetsam is "goods cast overboard deliberately, as to lighten a vessel or improve its stability in an emergency, which sink where jettisoned or are washed ashore. "

Does anyone know if 'fourteen miles away' is an allusion to something else? I know that it's in quotation marks in most of the lyrics I've looked up, but I'm not sure why. Anyone?

first off, not all the lyrics are written on this page, but im sure most of you already knew that. but if you need them here they are from the verse starting with "Now waking to the sun"

Now waking to the sun
I calculate what I had done
Like jumping from the bow (yeah)
Just to prove I knew how (yeah)
It's midnight's late reminder of
The loss of her, the one I love
My will to quickly end it all
So thought no end my need to fall

Into the ocean, end it all
Into the ocean, end it all
Into the ocean, end it all
into the ocean...end it all

[Zayra]
Into the ocean (goodbye) end it all (goodbye)
Into the ocean (goodbye) end it all (goodbye)
Into the ocean (goodbye) end it all (goodbye)

I want to swim away but don't know how
Sometimes it feels just like I'm falling in the ocean
Let the waves up take me down
Let the hurricane set in motion (yeah)
Let the rain of what I feel right now...come down
Let the rain come down
Let the rain come down

Into the ocean (goodbye) end it all (goodbye)
(In to space)
Into the ocean (goodbye) end it all (goodbye)
Into the ocean (goodbye) end it all (goodbye)
Into the ocean (goodbye) end it all (goodbye)
Into the ocean (goodbye) end it all (goodbye)
Into the ocean (goodbye) end it all (goodbye)
(I thought of just your face)
Into the ocean (goodbye) end it all (goodbye)
Into the ocean (goodbye) end it all (goodbye)
Into the ocean (goodbye) end it all (goodbye)
Into the ocean (goodbye) end it all (goodbye)

to me it sounds like he is talking about some major depression about a losing his girlfriend ("The loss of her, the one I love") or something like that, and it seems that he uses the 'ocean' as a comparison to his depression, deep and never ending. then it seems like he is singing about how he has begun to kill himself and has gone too far and regrets it but knows he cant stop it now, and he is thinking of her through the whole thing. 'into the ocean end it all' (into depression, and kill myself).

this song i think is about a guy who is "drowning" in his troubles and drug addiction. The coast guard represents a friend who should help but he can't find. The second verse is about how his body is reacting to the drugs in a negitive way especially the second part.

i’m treading for my life believe me how can i keep up this breathing
not knowing how to think... i scream aloud begin to sink
my legs and arms are broken down with envy for the solid ground
i’m reaching for the life within me
how can one man stop his ending...
well i thought of just your face
relaxed and floated into space

it is an awsome song and i absolutly love it

I love this song!!
I love how the words flow in their music! it's like they made a really good poem and sewed it up with the musical aspects to make it.
I think the song is talking about how he got himself into a situation that he was getting all swallowed up in and wanted to get out of but didn't know how.
I WANNA SWIM AWAY BUT DON'T KNOW HOW
SOMETIMES IT FEELS JUST LIKE I'M FALLING IN THE OCEAN
LET THE WAVES UP... TAKE ME DOWN
LET THE HURRICANE SET IN MOTION
LET THE RAIN OF WHAT I FEEL RIGHT NOW COME DOWN
LET THE RAIN COME DOWN
And then he explains how it feels like he's "falling in the ocean" Into this deep vast situation and then he explains it how he sees it all coming and he watches as it all set up but there's nothing he can really do so he's kinda like just let it happen. (let the rain fall down)

The verses go into more depth:
1st: about how he wishes he could do what he wanted and be what he wanted.
2nd: Looking for help and paniking at the thought of not having it. Then the WELL I THOUGHT OF JUST YOUR FACE
RELAXED AND FLOATED INTO SPACE is more up to the listeners interpretations.......there's many ways that could be interpreted.
3rd: is about looking back on what has happened. He took a chance on this one thing to see how it would end up and/or to prove that he could do it and now he's reflecting on it. He's also saying how by taking this chance he's effected his life and now he's engulfed in this sea of new surroundings because he ended how it use to be.

I love this song, the lyrics, everything about it!

From http://www.blueoctoberfan.com/foiled/biography.php

"“Into the Ocean,” with Delahoussaye’s seductive violin siren call and plucked mandolin, openly contemplates a death wish with so much honesty, fans write to the band, claiming tracks like this have prevented their own suicidal impulses."

this is all about personal interpretation and to me i think it's like when you want to give up and having everything keep you here that you just want to break off but also i think he just wants to get away from the world and stop having to face the problems this world has. honestly i think it's a wonderful piece and into the ocean to keep swimming endlessly to find something that is of value
