Lyrics for Hotel Song as interpreted by Airyca

Hotel Song Lyrics
Come in
Come in
Come into my world
I've got to show, show, show you
Come into my bed
I've got to know, know, know you

I have dreams of orca whales and owls
But I wake up in fear
You will never be my, you will never be my fool
Will never be my fool

Floaters in my eyes
Wake up in the hotel room
Cigarettes and lies
I am a child, it's too soon

I have dreams of orca whales and owls
But I wake up in fear
You will never be my, you will never be my fool
Will never be my fool

A little bag of cocaine
A little bag of cocaine
So who's the girl wearing my dress
I figured out her number
It's on a paper napkin
But I don't know her address
I wait downstairs

The porter smiles to me
A smile I've bought
With a couple of gold coins
A sign that I've been caught

I have dreams of orca whales and owls
But I wake up in fear
You will never be my, you will never be my dear
Will never be my dear, dear friend

Ba-da-da-dum-um, dear, dear friend
Ba-da-da-dum-um, dear, dear friend
Ba-da-da-dum-um, dear, dear friend
Ba-da-da-dum

A little bag of cocaine
A little bag of cocaine
So who's the girl wearing my dress
I figured out her number
It's on a paper napkin
But I don't know her address

Come into my world
I've got to show, show, show you
Come into my bed
I've got to know, know, know you

I have dreams of orca whales and owls
But I wake up in fear
You will never be my, you will never be my dear
Will never be my dear, dear friend

Ba-da-da-dum-um, dear, dear friend
Ba-da-da-dum-um, dear, dear friend
Ba-da-da-dum-um, dear, dear friend

If any one could tell who it is that does the "sound-effects" in the background I would be so pleased.

In the live version from reginaspektor.net?
Chris Kuffner and Ben Kalb are said to do the backing vocals.

It is written from the perspective of a hooker, and it sounds like she fell for one of his customers, but she knows that that's unrealistic and she's scared that they can never have a relationship.. and the napkin bit.. is she stalking his girlfriend? I don't know about that but here

"the porter smiles to me
a smile I've bought
with a couple of gold coins
a sign that I've been caught"

she has bribed the doorman not to tell on her

What I think; A girl trapped in delusion is dropped into the real world before she's ready, so she lives in happyness in her dreams and lives in fear of reality. the parts of her that she doesn't know what to do with, she fills with the wrong things, and when she's found out, only knows how to escape the truth once again, never to be able to keep any "dear friends" because she's always on the run.

This song is very catchy. Regina Captures feelings so well in her songs i just love her writing style. this song to me seems to me to be about a prostitute. these lines i have come to two conclusions about
a little bag of cocaine
a little bag of cocaine
so is the girl wearing my dress
I figured out her number
inside a paper napkin
but I don't know her address
I wade downstairs
first either this woman does is addicted to coccaine and doesn't know where or who she is. second one of the prostitutes in the same organization as reginas character has captured the eye of the man reginas character fell in love with.

the thing that dosent make since to me about the hooker idea is that she says you will never be my fool. i saw it more that she has been cheating on someone and realized that he has been doing the same thing. she sleeps well but wakes up in fear that she is going to get caught. the smile that she bought was paying the porter to act like he dosen't see her sneaking out. the only hole is that its a "hotel song" not "apartment song". so maby i am way off base

I actually don't think the whole song is about a hooker. Since the title is "Hotel Song" it makes sense that the song is about the various things that occur in the hotel. Each verse is from a different point of view perhaps... the older man, the virgin, the suspecting wife, the drug dealer... maybe not exactly those roles, but it's definately different people who talk, not the same person.

After going back and reading the song lyrics over, I totally agree with itsraninheaven. It does sound as though it's coming from people who could very likely be playing those roles in life, in a hotel. Regina Spektor's so amazing, and this is just another one of her masterpieces; she somehow manages to make her songs catchy and meaningful at the same time.

I think that this song is probably about a prostitute or hooker..but shes still kind of child like i think cause the line "i dream of orcha whales and owls" but she still wakes up in fear..like a child having a nightmare..shes also probably addicted to cocaine..because she says "a little bag of cocaine, a little bag of cocaine." and the line "a smile i've bought with a couple of gold coins" is like saying shes buying her happiness and yeahh!

I love itsraninheaven's idea, but I've always thought this song was about a teenager who runs away from home to persue the obligatory mysterious stranger she's infatuated with.

I love the way she says the line
"A little bag of cocaine"

It so cute.

It makes it sound like she's talking about something cute and fluffy, when in reality she's tlaking about
Well,

Cocaine.

To me, the song isn't about a hooker, but a girl who has promiscuous sex alot.

"come into my world
I've got to show show show you
come into my bed
I've got to know know know you"
She's inviting and enticing the man into her world, and her bed, and she is having hopes of getting to know him better after sex.

"I have dreams of orca whales and owls
but I wake up in fear
you will never be my, you will never be my fool
will never be my fool"

She dreams of innocence, and cute hopeful things, but realizes the nightmare she is living in everytime she wakes up. She realizes the men she has sex with will never love her, and don't have feelings for her. They will never want to be her fool, and she has no power over them.

"Floaters in my eyes
wake up in the hotel room
cigarettes and lies
I am a child, it's too soon"

This is about the morning after.I think the floaters in my eyes could be a metaphor for the way she sees the men, just bodies. Like floaters is slang for a dead corpse found floating in a body of water. The men are dead to her. She always wakes up alone in the hotel rooms, never feeling at home. She is trying to reason with herself saying she's just a kid, it's too soon to be acting like this.

"a little bag of cocaine
a little bag of cocaine
so is the girl wearing my dress"

THESE LYRICS SHOULD ACTUALLY BE SO WHO'S THE GIRL WEARING MY DRESS.
After doing enough cocaine she doesn't even know who she is anymore. She does this so she can forget the pain of the ordeal, and keep going on.

"I figured out her number
inside a paper napkin
but I don't know her address
I wade downstairs"

She has a number on a paper napkin, probably from some guy she met. So she could call him, and do it all over again. She doesn't know her own address because she doesn't have a home, so she just goes downstairs.

"the porter smiles to me
a smile I've bought
with a couple of gold coins
a sign that I've been caught"

She tries to leave, probably without paying for the hotel room or something. And the porter would know. So she bribes him to keep quiet, and he does. She's been caught, but it doesn't matter.

"you will never be my, you will never be my dear
will never be my dear, dear friend"

None of the men she finds will ever be her friend, or a dear friend, or anything. They are just one night stands.

So that's my take on this song. It's probably way off, but whatever. It's how I see it. Anyways, I love this song, and all of Regina's work. She is an unbelievable inspiration.

to me it seems like the girl does have a drug addiction: ' a little bag of cocaine a little bag of cocaine' but the lines: 'with a couple of gold coins a sign that I've been caught' seems like she is a recovering addict because in most 12 step programs they get color coins for the large amounts of times that they are clean and for years they get gold ones. sign that she has been caught. she got caught with drugs...

She dislikes the fact that she cannot luxuriate in dreams and comfort, as the happyness is cut off by the fear that wakes her up every night. She is not full, she's insecure and needs his attention before she allows him to come any closer. But she did not know how life really works, that is why are all these floaters in her eyes and trying to play a grown up with all those cigarettes, manage all these lies, she's just not ready for that yet. With cocaine the pressure gets much more barable - it is clear that he'll never be her fool, nor a dear friend, just like for the lady in her dress that she needs to know better to know herself and her path. The porter is just the next fake thing in reality - a fake smile that is easy to buy with couple of gold coins, life itself is like a hotel, where noone stays forever, everybody once leaves for good, cheats or enjoys you in their one-time night with you - just to let you go or have another one get away with your dress. But cocaine makes it so much bearable and "fun"...

I think the song's about child exploitation, in drugs and the sex trade... told from the perspective of a girl.

"Come into my world, I've got to show you" says that she needs you to know what she's going through. "Come into my bed, I've got to know you" means she needs love, not necessarily the sex, but the companionship.

"I have dreams of orca whales and owls...", dreams of more age-appropriate things, like seeing nature, and camping, and "You will never be my fool" meaning she'll never control anyone else - she's eternally enslaved in her world (and it's possible he's the one controlling her - a drug dealer who's kidnapped her, and having her move drugs for him?)

Floaters, caused by drug use, or being drugged. Waking up in the hotel room, with cigarettes and lies, meaning she was probably raped... "I am a child, it's too soon" to lose the innocence, being thrust into drugs.

A little bag of cocaine, a little bag of cocaine... now she's hooked. Who's the girl wearing my dress? Probably someone just like me, who's in the mess that I'm in... or maybe it's me, when I was younger? So young, I can't remember who I am, and I don't know her address to go visit.

"The porter smiles to me, a smile I've bought, with a couple of gold coins, a sign that I've been caught". I've been caught doing drugs and been put into rehab, the porter's happy that I'm doing better...

You will never be my dear, dear friend... you won't be there for me, to help me, and be there for me to talk to.

It's what I think.

Haha. I just heard this song on a Vodafone ad today. I couldn't believe it. Although it focused more on the orca whales and owls than the prostitutes and bags of cocaine. ^_^
