Lyrics for Yellow Sun as interpreted by JackWhite

Yellow Sun Lyrics
Yellow sun is shining in the afternoon
I'd really like to tell you but I feel it's too soon
My actions are dictated by the phase of the moon
The phase of the moon

The sun it isn't hiding when it sets on you
It's not a coward like me and I know but it's true
Waiting for the darkness now is all I can do
It's all I can do

And if the sun should follow us into your room
Then the courage will be robbed from me to tell you the truth
The setting sun's the only thing that's shining on you
That's shining on you

You're making me hungry
But what's really funny's it's not sunny anymore

And when I finally told you when the sun has gone
You're laughing 'cause I thought I was the only one
And the only thing that's left for me's the rising sun
The rising sun

You're making hungry, you're making me hungry
But what's really funny's it's not sunny anymore

It's not sunny anymore, it's not sunny anymore, it's not sunny anymore....

This song is amazing, i love it. musically it's so 60s, so hippy, so cool, kinda remind me of the sillier Cream stuff.
and lyrically, its just something that i, and i think a lot of people of a socially shy kind of persuasion will identify with a lot. It's about him wanting to reveal himself to someone, but not being able to, except maybe in some kind of closed, personal environment (maybe im interpretting it a bit literally), because of cowardice, or nerves, or whatever. i hope thats right.

i dont quite understand the line "the setting sun's the only thing that's shining on you" though. not sure i get what it could mean in the context...

I was thinking it was about the guy being a werewolf. You know, his actions being dicated by the phases of the moon, and the whole "you're making me hungry, and it isn't sunny any more" thing.

this kind of reminds me of this ..friend i had, who said he only felt he could be serious and open with me when we were being 'intimate'. maybe that's what this is about a lil bit - he can't share how he feels about this girl unless it's dimly lit and theyre alone in her room. otherwise he just finds it hard to be serious?

i agree with Big_Nothing.

i don't think the constant sunny/sun/yellow sun references are literal, just repeated imagery.

the character in the song is shy around the person (girl, perhaps, if romantically involved) and when he finally gets the courage up to reveal what he's hidden all along, it's not taken seriously ("now you're laughing 'cause i thought i was the only one") which only makes him less courageous next time.

I think that the "Sun" represents the guy's feelings for a girl. As the second line says, he wants too tell her, but he feels it's too soon. He also can't find the right way to express his feelings.

He states that the only thing left to do is wait for the darkness, meaning to simply wait for the feelings he has for the girl to simply pass.

When he says "You're making me hungry...But what's really funny is it's not sunny anymore" I think maybe the girl is expressing some sort of feelings towards him, but he is already "over her", but he hasn't told her that he is over her.

The fourth verse is after he tells her that he is over his feelings for her. They both realize that the feelings were fleeting. He realizes that all that can be done now is to wait for feelings to arise again, but not necissarily in the same place.

That is just my take on it...I could be completely wrong.

alright, raconteurs people, its verse by verse meaning time again!

Yellow sun is shining in the afternoon
I'd really like to tell you but I feel it's too soon
My actions are dictated by the phase of the moon
The phase of the moon

i guess the yellow sun is a metaphor for happy things
hed like to tell the girl but he feels its too soon
and the phase of the moon thing is a funny, cleverish way of saying that there is a pattern of what you have to do as a boyfriend, and when to say/do it

The sun it isn't hiding when it sets on you
It's not a coward like me and I know but it's true
Waiting for the darkness now is all I can do
It's all I can do

he thinks the girl is a good person and that she brings 'sunshine' to his life
but hes kind of a jerk ish person, so he gets into bad situations with her, and it seems to happen spontaneously too

And if the sun should follow us into your room
Then the courage will be robbed from me to tell you the truth
The setting sun's the only thing that's shining on you
That's shining on you

teehee :)
hes getting her into bed
and then things change....drastically

You're making me hungry
But what's really funny's it's not sunny anymore

making me hungry...for love!
but its not exactly the best situation to be in at the moment

And when I finally told you when the sun has gone
You're laughing 'cause I thought I was the only one
And the only thing that's left for me's the rising sun
The rising sun

hes talking to her and thinking about breaking up
and hes surprised cuz she actually agrees that things arent going very well
and he just wants some happiness back in the relationship

You're making hungry, you're making me hungry
But what's really funny's it's not sunny anymore

It's not sunny anymore, it's not sunny anymore, it's not sunny anymore....

yep, he still wants love
but i guess they broke up

sorry if im completely 100% off
but thats what it says to me

I agree with some of most things everyone has said! The vampire idea i had never thought of, and while i'm not sure if that was the intended meaning of the song it's very clever.

I beleive the song is about a guy who is 'just friends' with a girl and is trying to work up the courage to tell her. Things are going really well for them but he just can't work up the nerve to tell her. I think 'my actions are dictated by the phase of the moon' is him giving an excuse for why he can't tell her he likes her right now, ie the moon is not in the right position, guess i'd better wait till it is. Then when he finally works up the nerve to tell her it's too late, the good times have gone and she's found someone else.

Anyway thats m interpretation, and on reading it over i've realised i interpret it that way because exactly the same thing happened to me :(

maybe the werewolf idea is a hidden metaphor for a different side of him which reveals his "dark" desires

ok i have a very different idea than most of you so heres the verse for verse:

Yellow sun is shining in the afternoon
I'd really like to tell you but I feel it's too soon
My actions are dictated by the phase of the moon
The phase of the moon

*The position of the sun and the time of the day are metaphors for the condition of the relationship. The end of the day would be the end of the relationship. So the yellow sun in the afternoon is like when it's winding down but not done yet and he feels its too soon to mention the lack of feeling to the girl*

The sun it isn't hiding when it sets on you
It's not a coward like me and I know but it's true
Waiting for the darkness now is all I can do
It's all I can do

*He's afraid to end it, unlike the sun which sets on her, and he thinks all he can do is wait for it to end on its own (the darkness)*

And if the sun should follow us into your room
Then the courage will be robbed from me to tell you the truth
The setting sun's the only thing that's shining on you
That's shining on you

*If his old feelings for her are still there when he tries to tell her it's over then he won't be able.*

You're making me hungry
But what's really funny's it's not sunny anymore

*he thinks it's ironic how now that his feelings (sunny) are gone he still wants her (hungry)*

And when I finally told you when the sun has gone
You're laughing 'cause I thought I was the only one
And the only thing that's left for me's the rising sun
The rising sun

*When he does finally tell her that it's over she also feels the same way. Now all that's left for him is a new relationship or a new beginning for this one*

You're making hungry, you're making me hungry
But what's really funny's it's not sunny anymore

It's not sunny anymore, it's not sunny anymore, it's not sunny anymore....

Yellow sun is shining in the afternoon
I'd really like to tell you but I feel it's too soon
My actions are dictated by the phase of the moon
The phase of the moon

----This song tells a story, this part of the story is about either a young boy or a young girl who fears telling him or her about their interested in them. The sun represents the beginning of their lust and he wont tell her or him until the phases of the moon tells him its fine, perhaps a sign from that person to know its okay to tell them.

The sun it isn't hiding when it sets on you
It's not a coward like me and I know but it's true
Waiting for the darkness now is all I can do
It's all I can do

--- here, the sun could represent someone who is also interested in that person and it is pretty obvious that she or he likes the person and the person is scared because they are shy, once again the darkness represents a sign from that person. so they wont make a move until they get a sign.

And if the sun should follow us into your room
Then the courage will be robbed from me to tell you the truth
The setting sun's the only thing that's shining on you
That's shining on you

--here the sun could also represent the other person
perhaps the person being with them robs the courage from him or her not to tell the person and the sun shining on that person could represent could perhaps, be the person flirting back and it seems like they like each other and the person has lot all hope.

You're making me hungry
But what's really funny's it's not sunny anymore

--- the person says you are hungry because they really like this person, and whats funny is that the person is not there anymore so it would be the perfect opportunity for the secret to be revealed.

And when I finally told you when the sun has gone
You're laughing 'cause I thought I was the only one
And the only thing that's left for me's the rising sun
The rising sun

--- right here the secret is revealed and the person is being laughed at because that person is not that only interested. and the sun represents a new relationship like the beginning. so the person is just waiting for something new.

You're making hungry, you're making me hungry
But what's really funny's it's not sunny anymore

It's not sunny anymore, it's not sunny anymore, it's not sunny anymore....

--- here the person who represented the sun has broken up with the person who he or she was interested in, the person is hungry but not for that person but for someone else.

The sun represents friendship. The darkness represents his love.

"Waiting for the darkness now is all I can do" is him waiting for her to have feelings for him too.
"The sun isn't hiding when it sets on you" means that he feels they can still be friends and take it to the next level at the same time.
"And if the sun should follow us into your room then the courage will be robbed from me to tell you the truth" means if he tries to get intimate with her and she treats him just as a friend, he won't be able to reveal his true feelings.
"And when I finally told you when the sun has gone, you're laughing 'cause I thought I was the only one" means he told her about his feelings and she's laughing because either she had feelings too or a lot of people have feelings for her.

I guess I'm leaving the ending open to your interpretation. Did she turn him down saying that everyone has feelings for her at some point and they should continue with friendship, or by telling him that she has feelings for him too?

Its def about a guy who knows the relationship is over, but the sex is good so he cant end it.... and the vampire/werewolf thing is just a clever device to convey that message

Listening to this song, and taking note of jack white's songwriting (Although the core of the song was written by Benson for his solo album, they have very similar songwriting techniques), you'd have to admit that jack's stories within songs are often more complex than a "Guy breaks up with girl" situation. I think that there is definitely an "extra terrestrial" element to the song, most probably with vampires or werewolves. Although i haven't read into the particulars of the story too much, thats what i think.

Why would the raconteurs write a song about vampire or werewolf? I mean, come on, guys!

I think it's just about a boy who's fooling around with this girl and actually really likes her, he's in love... when he tells her that he loves her she says that she just wants sex, no strings attached. so it's kinda weird to continue with this thing they have and they break up.

"My actions are dictated by the phase of the moon"..."The sun it isn't hiding when it sets on you"- This means that sometimes he feels that he's in love with her but he's still not sure about it until he sees her again.

"Waiting for the darkness now is all I can do" - He is just waiting for the moment when he'll get tired of hiding his feelings for her and just say it cause he can't hide it from her.
And "the hunger" means lust.

See, not everything nowadays has to be associated with vampires.

I thought of it as a werewolf story too; to be taken either literally or metaphorically I'm not sure.

I see it as a boy wanting to tell a girl that he's a werewolf, but is shy or timid about revealing this to her. So he's waiting for the sun to set to make it easier to tell her; hence why if the sun follows them into the room, he won't have the courage anymore to tell her. It also explains the line, "the setting sun's the only thing shining on you," because as long as the sun stays up, she's safe from having the secret revealed. Then at the end, when the sun has set and he reveals that he is the hungry werewolf, she laughs because he thought he was the only one-- she turns out to be a werewolf too.

Taken literally, it's kind of a funny story with a twist ending that he's sweating telling a secret only to find that she has the same secret. If being a hungry werewolf is a metaphor for desire, then it's a story about him wanting to reveal his desire for her, and when he does she reveals that she has the same feelings for him.
