The earth is warm next to my ear
Insects noise is all that I hear
A magic trick makes the world disappear
The skies are dark, they're dark but they're clear

A distant motorcade and suddenly there's joy
The snow and ticker tape blurs all my senses numb
It's like the finish line where everything just ends
The crack of radios seems close enough to touch

Cold water, cleaning my wounds
A side parade, with a single balloon
I'm done with this, I'm counting to ten
Blue as seas, running to them

I feel like I am watching everything from space
And in a minute I hear my name and I wake
I think the finish line's a good place we could start
Take a deep breath, take in all that you could want

Great ending to a great album: the epilogue to Open Your Eyes.

I must correct myself on a previous post, saying that "warm ground" was in the song Warmer Climate, when it's actually in this song.

But I still think the "warmth" means the same thing in both songs, a warm reality that can only exist after a catharsis has taken place. Think of Set the Fire to the Third Bar, the ground is cold, harsh. Think of the deep water that surrounds his helpless ship in Make This Go On Forever. These are the trials he must go through to reach a higher level of being, understanding. The cold water in this song is thus an end to those trials, symbolic of baptism (death and rebirth).

The finish line is indeed a good place to start, now that the journey has made him a stronger person.
