    General Comment:i definitely agree with thepowercut. i think a lot of people will only look at "every girl i've ever loved has wanted to be hit," but they seem to skip over the, "every girl i've ever loved has left me 'cause i WOULDN'T do it." i don't think believe seriously condoning abuse here, maybe he could have approached the song from less of a dark-humor angle but i think that's just his style. and lyrics and meaning aside, i think this song has a neat sound.

    as a female fan of smog i am okay with this song because i know plenty of girls who've left perfectly decent guys for a "real man" who beats them up. i can understand why a guy would be bitter.

    General Comment:To me this song is borne of the frustration the singer feels at having been the "soft and gentle" lover, the "understanding, caring, sensitive" type only to have his relationships end with girl(s) leaving him for the more macho wife-beater jock types. And he's being sarcastic when he says they want to be hit, meaning they want something more raw and more likely to hurt them. So he's questioning why his seemingly common sense approach seems to fail him so often. I.e. "Girls always go for the bastards". And sadly, it's often true.

    To anyone who for a second thinks Bill is condoning or even seriously talking about domestic violence - dig a bit deeper!

    General Comment:yeah, this song may never be ok for some smog fans (boy or girl) but i think its a song that can be understood in different ways and i don't think bill callahan wrote it to try to encourage violence against women or make it ok.

    General Comment:To me this sounds like one of those songs where he is singing as a character rather than it being a direct representation of what he feels/has experienced.

    Its about misogyny and how some men think that its not only ok to hit women but its actually what they want.

    "Every girl I've ever loved left me" Shows how his bitterness and hatred towards women came about.

    It sounds very much like the sort of the conversation which arises when groups of men start talking about women, especially when alcohol is involved, maybe its based on an overheard conversation in a pub.

    General Comment:I too am surprised more people haven't said anything about this song. Yeah, Smog has a very dark, dry sense of humor. I feel like this song could also be about masochism.

    General Comment:I'm amazed this song hasn't provoked more of a reaction, which is what I guess he's attempting to do with this one by masking such disturbing lyrics with the lo-fi deadpan.

    "Bruise 'em, youll never lose 'em" a twisted version of the much repeated adage treat 'em mean, keep 'em keen.
    Very funny in a blackly comic way.
