I can't escape this hell
So many times I've tried
But I'm still caged inside
Somebody get me through this nightmare
I can't control myself

So what if you can see the darkest side of me?
No one would ever change this animal I have become
And help me believe it's not the real me
Somebody help me tame this animal
(This animal, this animal)

I can't escape myself
(I can't escape myself)
So many times I've lied
(So many times I've lied)
But there's still rage inside
Somebody get me through this nightmare
I can't control myself

So what if you can see the darkest side of me?
No one would ever change this animal I have become
And we believe it's not the real me
Somebody help me tame this animal I have become
And we believe it's not the real me
Somebody help me tame this animal

Somebody help me through this nightmare
I can't control myself
Somebody wake me from this nightmare
I can't escape this hell

(This animal, this animal, this animal
This animal, this animal, this animal, this animal)

So what if you can see the darkest side of me?
No one will ever change this animal I have become
And we believe it's not the real me
Somebody help me tame this animal I have become
And we believe it's not the real me
Somebody help me tame this animal
(This animal I have become)

General Comment:i think it means that a person has something dark inside them that they can't control and they're hurting their loved ones and it feels like a nightmare but they can't control it anymore and it always takes over that person.

Song Comparison:This song is like the song the band Skillet sings, the song "Monster" is also talking about your darkest side, I have fantasized about this once

His heart is caged in a cell of darkness and can't escape it, and so he's warning people around him to stay away

Do you get what I mean?

Song Meaning:So, much like a lot of other people on here, I agree (after researching) that this song is a reference to his drug addiction and his struggles through rehab. However, what I feel is missing in these explanations is what makes him an "animal" Aside from using the term animal to mean a beast and a monster, also think about how he acts like he NEEDS his drugs, as if an animal were to need water. He would do literally anything for it, and he is willing to put aside morals and believes to become more of an animal, and losing control of his more human free will and aspirations. Becoming something that to him is unrecognizable, and heart wrenching, as he screams from inside the cage of his mind.

My Interpretation:This is another song Adam said he wrote while in rehab.

From my point of view, I feel like he realizes his drug addiction changed him for the worse, but he can't control it, and he's trying to cope with it, but he doesn't see any way of "taming the animal." He can't see the damage he's causing to those around him, but it's like he's watching from a cage and he can't do anything about it.

    -Favorite line-

"I can't escape myself, so many times I've lied, but there's still rage inside."

General Comment:Awesome bass line... Insane lyrics, great song and riffs ! \m/ -this song is about his drug use and how it affected him and the people around him, hence "somebody help me through this nightmare, I can't control myself. somebody wake me from this nightmare. I can't escape this hell!"

My Interpretation:Whenever I listen to this song, I think of pure rage, unblocked and self-consuming.
Pretty much you can't even control yourself, and you take on a different persona.
    "So many times I've lied,
    but there's still rage inside."
That says to me even if you lie to yourself about it, the anger and aggression will still be there.

I have this kind of anger, I can't control it once it gets loose, so this song hits deep.

General Comment:Feeling like you’re in some kind of a hell. You're screaming for somebody yet no one seems to come, so there is a rage inside, you’ve become an animal. Help me to believe this person I’ve become isn’t really me, that this darker side I see can be controlled and I can wake up.

You've tried but don't really know if it's possible, if you'll ever escape, and it almost like no one no matter how much you try will ever really know.
