We'll do it all
Everything
On our own

We don't need
Anything
Or anyone

If I lay here
If I just lay here
Would you lie with me and just forget the world?

I don't quite know
How to say
How I feel

Those three words
Are said too much
They're not enough

If I lay here
If I just lay here
Would you lie with me and just forget the world?

Forget what we're told
Before we get too old
Show me a garden that's bursting into life

Let's waste time
Chasing cars
Around our heads

I need your grace
To remind me
To find my own

If I lay here
If I just lay here
Would you lie with me and just forget the world?

Forget what we're told
Before we get too old
Show me a garden that's bursting into life

All that I am
All that I ever was
Is here in your perfect eyes, they're all I can see

I don't know where
Confused about how as well
Just know that these things will never change for us at all

If I lay here
If I just lay here
Would you lie with me and just forget the world?

Song Meaning:The key is in "those three words". What are the 3 words which are said too much, but not enough?

    "I LOVE YOU".

People say it too much when they don't mean it (even if they *think they mean it, and are just confusing passion and desire for actual love).

He just wants the pressure off. He doesn't know how he feels and he doesn't trust how she feels yet. He's saying "today is sufficient for today". Let's just be here in the moment and not get caught up in all that noise. No games. Just be here and breathe and let's let the stream of consciousness (the cars racing around his head) slow down.

Just lay here, lay here with me, and let's forget the world.

My Interpretation:I think it means to just calm down, not worry so much, and just be next to someone who makes you happy. Similar to "Hakuna Matata", but also with the added element of being with someone you care about. Well, I suppose, in a way, Hakuna Matata is like that, too, in that Timon, Pumbaa, and Simba all value each other's friendships, but that part is not sung, it's shown. They all live in the jungle together, and they're all loyal to one another.
"Chasing Cars" could apply to any variety of love, be it friendship love (like what I just said about Timon, Pumbaa & Simba), parent-child love (my mom & I sing this together sometimes), pet-human love (as many people have said, possibly a dog and master), sibling love (depends on the siblings and the moment, I guess...I've never had a sibling living in my house, but, while I have older brothers that were grown before I was born, I still wish I had a younger sibling, it's lonely being the only kid in the house, especially since I've always been EXTREMELY young-at-heart and no-one ever truly understands me), other family love, or, yes, romantic love (Timon & I).

General Comment:Honestly i would hate to burst all of your bubbles, but after listening to this song, i think he is singing about his dog, or at least the simplicity that a dog has. Everything makes sense when you think of it like that.

My Opinion:Its simplicity is just plain beauty. Mr. Lightbody's amazing voice just makes it even better. Favourite part: "Those three words are said too much, they're not enough." - this is just painfully true. Anyway, I still don't know what it's supposed to do with cars.. :)

General Comment:about lead singer on the song:

He stated it was his "purest love song". The phrase "Chasing Cars" came from Lightbody's(lead singers) father, in reference to a girl Lightbody was infatuated with, "You're like a dog chasing a car. You'll never catch it and you just wouldn't know what to do with it if you did."

Song Meaning:All those things everyone is saying is true- it's about a very powerful love. Like the love a dog feels for his master. Undying, overwhelmingly powerful love and adoration. All the dog wants to do is lie with the master and if they don't actually go chase cars, they can at least chase cars in their head. It doesn't matter what they do because they're together.

General Comment:My husband and I chose this as our first dance at our wedding. It's a beautiful song about giving your complete self to a person. About loving someone so much that there is no way to show them. To stand still with that person and just be immersed in that love that you share.

My Interpretation:I think you can't really assess what the song "was meant to mean" if you can closely relate to it for some reason and I think that's not bad, that's the wonder that it means different things to each person.

For me Chasing Cars is a metaphor of going after something that you cannot reach anymore because you've either missed your chance or you had it but "the car" needed to pass anyway. Even though you understand that you need to move on in a different direction and stop wasting time chasing that car you still feel the necessity to take a moment. A moment to remember, a moment to stay a little bit longer and a moment of not thinking about the future yet. After that you need to GO ON...
