I know, what I know, I know
On the car ride down
I hear it in my head real low
Turn into
The only thing I ever--
Turn into
Hope I do
Turn into you
I know, what I know, I know
That girl you found
Keeps that kind of window closed
She'll turn into
The only thing you ever--
Turn into
Hope I do
Turn into you
Can't say why I kept this from you
My those quiet eyes become you
Leave it where it can't remind us
Turn this all around behind us
Oh! Well I know!
I'll fall right in to keep you out
I'd like to tell you all about it
I know, what I know, I know
This last time around
I'll hear it in my head real low
Turn into
The only thing you ever know
I know, what I know, I know
Ah yes.
On the car ride down
I hear it in my head real low
Turn into
The only thing I ever--
Turn into
Hope I do
Turn into you
I know, what I know, I know
That girl you found
Keeps that kind of window closed
She'll turn into
The only thing you ever--
Turn into
Hope I do
Turn into you
Can't say why I kept this from you
My those quiet eyes become you
Leave it where it can't remind us
Turn this all around behind us
Oh! Well I know!
I'll fall right in to keep you out
I'd like to tell you all about it
I know, what I know, I know
This last time around
I'll hear it in my head real low
Turn into
The only thing you ever know
I know, what I know, I know
Ah yes.

I think it's about being terrified of opening up. Just being guarded and paralyzed with that fear of pain that always comes with a new love, or even a new friendship. Maybe she's been hurt before, "I know what I know."
I know on the car ride down
I hear it my head real low
Turn into the only thing I ever
She can feel herself shutting down and the anxiety taking over. The walls being built up. I know what it feels like...giving one word answers, avoiding eye contact, rejecting people before they reject you.
Well, I know that girl you found
Keep that kind of window closed
She'll turn into the only thing that ever
This other person wants to befriend her. And she's saying, no, you don't really know me, *I* know me...and I'm not the girl you want. So don't even think about falling for me or wanting to be my friend. It might sound harsh, but that's just a defense mechanism, pushing people away. Just recently I started talking with people I know online, like facebook, and I can be so outgoing and likeable and different than I am in person. But when they want to hang out with me face to face, it scares the fuck out of me, because I know I'll just turn into that same, quiet, shy girl. "That girl you found" isn't real.
Can't say why I kept this from ya
My those quiet eyes become ya
Leave it where it can't remind us
Turn this all around behind us
Oh, well I know
I'd fall right in to keep you out
I'd like to tell you all about it
She finally let someone in and now she's waiting for their response. She's getting all nervous and over-analyzing things in her head - automatically assuming the worst. She's kind of praying they can put this in the past and forget what she said. Then, she admits her issues..."I'd fall right in to keep you out," is such a perfect line. She wants so bad to be different, she'd kill to able to tell this person everything about herself, but it's just so fucking terrifying...there's always that potential for the worst.
"I know this last time around
I'll hear it in my head real low
Turn into the only thing that ever known"
Later, she'll replay this scene over and over in her head. Wondering how things could have gone different, stressig about the next time she sees the person.
Obviously, this is a really personal interpretation, so I know it's most likely "wrong." The cheating aspect fits in very well too. So don't think I'm saying this is the official end all be all meaning, lol.
The "I know what I know" stanza is like a perfect circle. She knows what she always "knows" and that's why she can't escape turning into herself all the time. So she'll "turn into the only thing thing that ever known. Only thing that ever knows."
Altogether this song explains "how far she is to keep him out." What she wants to tell her lover/friend all about.
If the song is about herself, then why is it constructed in such a manner to where it sounds like a dialogue she is having with someone else??? How would you explain "That girl you found....keep that kind of window closed"? The seemingly treason of the whole situation is hard for both of them to discuss and they would rather discuss it indirectly. When she directly speaks to "them", who is she talking to?
i think that this song has nothing to do with cheating.
i feel like she's in a relationship but does not know how to be in one. she closes up, and she turns into what she always turns into. and she wishes she could be like the other person, and be more open.
even where she directly speaks to them she says "Can't say why I kept this from you
My those quiet eyes become you
Leave it where it can't remind us
Turn this all around behind us
Oh . . . well, I know
How far I am to keep you out
I'd like to tell you all about it"
maybe it's not about commitment, but to a certain extent i think the song is about HERSELF rather then about whoever else she is singing. it's about her own mistakes and how she wishes she was like them more. i don't know what those mistakes are, but i like to interpret it that way

Yeah, I'm pretty sure it's "The only thing ya ever knew" and "only thing you ever knew".
The line "can't say why I kept it from you. My, those quiet eyes become you implies unrequited love probably from both parties and "I know what I know" implies with probable hope that she she knew he loves her too. "Leave it where it can't remind us, turn it all around behind us" implies the act of burying whatever really feel for each other. "I'll fall right in to keep you out, I'd like to tell you all about it' , which i think is the most striking line in this song, describes her personal conflict of falling in but at the same time keeping him away at an arm's length, but she would like to keep him around just the same. The piano and eerie buzz-sounding guitar (or it could be an organ, i'm not sure) flooding in is awesome.
needless to say I love this song it's frakkin painfully beautiful.
I imagine when she says "I hope I turn into you" she's saying she wants leave their relationship behind and forget about each other. While he's moved on, she's still looking back.
