Oh no, what have I done, all of these stitches have split one by one
Oh now I see the design, the intricate framework to which i align
All my anguish and my happiness, but I got not time for this mess
Come down, come down with me, to check on the ashes of my history
I can't leave them alone, but sometimes I wish they would rot down below
But on the contrary, these fires flourish in me.
And I lay just 'fore I wake and you catch the sun and throw it down on my face
I know you're plotting my course, still influencing my dreams silver seahorse
I feel the mixture in me, fire and water musical ubiquity
And I know you're never quite there, satisfaction eluding you like clean air
One day I'll float on the tide, silver seahorse on a string mirrors the sky
I'll be alone on the sea, waiting for the sky to engulf me.
But out here alone on the night, my silver seahorse reflecting the light
I flash the ray 'cross the sea, hoping this beam still connects you to me
I know the tides changing my course, but I'm still the one who believes in my silver seahorse
But on the whole, or on the contrary, it's not alright, alright.
And falling through defects and consequential loss, it's not alright, alright.

To me this song is all about grief and loss... I went through a time of immense grief around the time this song was released and I could and still do relate to all of the lyrics... The stitches coming undone to me is trying to move on and get on with life, but then the pain and memory of your loss undoes it all, your life does feel like a mess and it's a mess you haven't chosen and don't want to deal with... The silver sea horse is the love you still feel for the person you lost, and the invisible, undeniable connection that will always remain. Grief is a burden that you wish you could leave behind sometimes, but 'the fire in me' is the love that will always burn.... and sometimes when you lay just far awake, you can feel the love and connection you had with someone before they died... plotting my course, the belief that someone you love is watching over you.... it's so so beautiful and honest and true... I love it....and it's never alright that someone you love has died...
I think this song is about a broken relationship, which he regrets he took part in destroying - "Oh no, what have I done, all of these stitches have split one by one."
He still longs for what used to be, and he hopes there's still something there - "I flash the ray 'cross the sea, hoping this beam still connects you to me".
Such a nice song.
His "anguish and hapiness" certainly describes the feeling of unrequitedness.
"Come down, come down with me, to check on the ashes of my history
I can't leave them alone, but sometimes I wish they would rot down below
But on the contrary, these fires flourish in me."
Once again describes unrequitedness beautifully - wanting more than ever to put the past behind you, but unable to put out the fire so to speak.
and the silver seahorse aspect relates to the dreaming that the relationship was the way it used to be.
I think the song makes sense under the light of unrequited love.
"Oh no, what have I done, all of these stitches have split one by one" everything that was holding him together has slowly come undone.
"Oh now I see the design, the intricate framework to which i align
All my anguish and my happiness, but I got not time for this mess" he realises what he was relying on, and that he can't anymore because he has other things he needs to concentrate on
"Come down, come down with me, to check on the ashes of my history
I can't leave them alone, but sometimes I wish they would rot down below
But on the contrary, these fires flourish in me."
he's had hard times in the past but he's got through it, but they influence who he is now and he sometines wishes he could erase the memories
but on the contrary, he knows he's alive, he has passions and things to live for? (not sure how to explain that part, but it makes sense in my mind lol)
"And I lay just 'fore I wake and you catch the sun and throw it down on my face
I know you're plotting my course, still influencing my dreams silver seahorse
I feel the mixture in me, fire and water musical ubiquity"
at first i thought the first line was like something great happening all of a sudden that he didnt expect, but maybe it's saying he was about to wake up to something and then the "silver seahorse" threw the sun down on his face, woke him up in an instant? lol, again, i have thoughts but it's hard to explain them.
i think the next line with the silver seahorse is feeling like someone who isn't there anymore, you are still having dreams of them and still feel they're controlling how you feel?
i feel the mixture in me i think is saying that he's a mixture of optomistic and pessimistic, or happy and sad, or something.
"And I know you're never quite there, satisfaction eluding you like clean air"
they're really not there though, maybe the next line is saying that they were satisfied and then disappeared?
"One day I'll float on the tide, silver seahorse on a string mirrors the sky"
one day he'll be able to breathe again, and the next line doesn't make much sense to me lol.
"I'll be alone on the sea, waiting for the sky to engulf me."
he's alone but he'll wait for something good to come along, or for him to be lifted up in some way? perhaps by something or someone
"But out here alone on the night, my silver seahorse reflecting the light
I flash the ray 'cross the sea, hoping this beam still connects you to me
I know the tides changing my course, but I'm still the one who believes in my silver seahorse"
he knows he should let go because it's just a dream, but he feels he's unable to, he hopes he doesn't need to, he still believes.
"But on the whole, or on the contrary, it's not alright, alright.
And falling through defects and consequential loss, it's not alright, alright."
he can't handle it, and he's experienced loss?
and it's not alright.
probably different to what josh pyke actually wrote the song about, but that's what it means to me and that's the only way i can interpret it.
sometimes that's good with songs, you don't need to know exactly what they're about but relate to them in your own way.
Any Way, it is still the greatest song in the world.
relies to the Ideal and Perfect Relationship that he wants, Hence the "Silver Seahorse" part. it is a metaphore for the perfect relationship.
He also describes about his past relationships and how they have affected him in a painful, but yet an experiencing way as he wants to change it and make this one count.
on the contrary, there's fire still fluroshing in me means that even though he has caused mistakes in the past. he cannot forget them and also means that he still has a chance to fix it again
"I know you're plotting my course, still influencing my dream silver Seahorse" means that she is making him feel the way he feels, and he still has faith in having the Perfect relationship with her.
When he says " falling through deep fits and consequential loss, it's not alright, alright, alright means that he cannot risk falling and failing again, it is not good for the health of his Perfect relationship/Silver seahorse.
finally, when he means that he'll flash a ray across the sea, hoping that it will still connect you to me, refers to when he show his love and affection to her, hopefully she can be connected to it again.
So when you listen to the song, you should understand how he feels now.
How he has said it maybe confuses you, but now it all makes sense
I absolutely love the line ‘I know you're plotting my course, still influencing my dreams silver seahorse’. Just the idea that something that either doesn’t exist or isn’t there could have such an influence is pretty cool.
and it confuses the heck out of me..
is he happy or is he sad?
could be about a dream, or about religion.
maybe he feels he's the only one who still believes in something that was once important to many..
it's a stunning song, no matter what it's supposed to mean.
