i love max.
& um so it is a metaphor, fool.
im lame, but hes talking about the only person off his list he wanted was the one that hurt him, & now hes over it, & showing the person they gained nothing from trying to destroy him, & theyre a thing of the past, only dead skin to max, something you dont even notice coming off of you & falling to the floor.

Wasn't he mentally ill for a while?? Like bipolar or something? I think this song is a metaphor (ha) referring to his mental illness as something that was destroying him and the band but now he's over it (all you are to me is dead skin) and he's got control of it (you're safe inside my fist)
but i don't get the 16 thing....

if its about a girl then it could be her age
this could be a sequal to wow i can get sexual too with him trying to get rid of the scandal of having a relationship with an underage girl.

max was mentally ill. while writing this album, he has to be put in an instatution for like two weeks cause the stress of trying to make ...is a real boy into a rock opera made him believe that everyone was a cannibal hired to eat him. when he got out, they gave up on the rock opera concept. and continued. andyeahh, hes bipolar. so it could be about his mental illnesses.

but knowing mex, its probally a metaphor(duhh) about sex.

oh c'mon, guys, ITS A METAPHOR, FOOL.

if Max names a song something like this, giving it the image that its supposed to be deep, its probably not. we, Say Anything fans, should know to read into the songs that appear to not have any other meaning at all.
So, with that said,
I think that this song is about a hard-ass break up where the chick just couldnt let go of him. she goes through the hassle of buying his band their own apartment, then she takes to threatening him, which, like most would probably agree, drove him nuts (no, not crazy-house nuts). from there he just kept on relating her to dead skin because all she is [is] itchy and bothersome.

my interpretations:

He's been with 16 girls before at the time writing this song. AKA 16 exes. I wouldn't say 16 girls he's slept with. I'd say this girl is the one that's often referred to in Say Anything's early songs, which is said to have sparked the creation of the band. She's the only one who can "get me hot like this" meaning angry, not turned on. Now he's saying "all you are to me is dead skin" saying he's over her now, yet she's begging for him back. So he tells her to give in to every sick demand he makes, as if for some sort of revenge. But all she is to him is dead skin.

I forgot to include the part about "got your scars on my wrist, you're safe inside my fist." I think this part is using slitting wrists as a metaphor (fool) for depression. Since this is the girl that made him depressed in the first place, he's saying "I have your scars on my wrist" like the scars on his wrist are the depression she brought to him. Though it could also mean literally cutting his wrists, but since the song is supposed to be consecutive metaphors I think there's a deeper meaning.

going along the lines of what maddyunderstood said about the title misleading us while the lyrics are actually incredibly literal, i would have to agree with cigarette--
this song is about his penis...jerking off.

"none of them could get me hot like this"- none of the girls he's had sex with can satisfy him as much as he can.
"you're safe inside my fist"- literally in his fist.
"scars on my wrist"- either actual marks on his wrist from masturbating...or he's referring to some girl who hurt him that he doesn't need because he can please himself.
"all you are to me is dead skin flaking off onto the pavement."- dead skin is falling off because of the constant friction and he's saying that he would treat the girl like nothing more than useless remains of a night of pleasure.

it's kind of gross, but that's just what i got from it.
