Lyrics for At Last as interpreted by delial

At Last Lyrics
I can say that I've lived here in honor and danger
But I'm just an animal and cannot explain a life

Down this chain of days
I wished to stay among my people
Relation now means nothing
Having chosen so defined

And if death should smell my breathing
As it passes beneath my window
Let it lead me
Trembling, trembling

I own every bell that tolls for me

That line makes me think of Deep Red Bells.

bells=death, beckoning.

I think she's saying that at last she's come to find that she's happy with the way she lived and should she die at least she will have lived.

I wonder about the meaning of 'Relation now means nothing'

This is such a beautiful song - I listen to the final three songs on "Fox Confessor Brings the Flood" together on repeat. I absolutely agree with littlelindsayy that it's about the peace that comes before death, knowing that you have lived a good life. I think that "Relation, now, means nothing," might be talking about the idea that good and evil can be relative or subjective - instead, she has chosen her way of life and thought it good ("Having chosen, so defined").

I agree with littlelindsayy about the message of the song, but I think "relation, now, means nothing" could demonstrate that by the time life is nearing its end and a person feels accomplished, thier earthly bonds with people become unimportant. It no longer matters who she has been tied to her whole life; she has shaped her own identity and is ready to depart into a new world.

"Relation now means nothing/Having chosen, so defined"

My take on this is more literal. I know Neko has a tense relationship with some of her family members, particularly her parents, from whom I believe she's at least semi-estranged. I've thought of this line as a reference to basing one's identity not on blood ties (which aren't chosen and can often be with people who are unsupportive & not simpatico), but on the relationships you have with your friends -- those whom you consider family because they're kindred spirits.

I agree with persimmon on this line: "Relation now means nothing/Having chosen, so defined"
She never said the place she's talking about is where she was born, or that the ones she refers to as her "people" are the ones she was born among. I think of someone having traveled a long way, homeless, and having finally come to a place and a people to call their own.

this is, IMO, by a large margin, the best song on the album

I feel like there is quite a bit in this short little song

I agree with persimmon on the idea that she is simply saying that what she has poured her life into has been the people she has chosen as her "relation." But it's so simple and sweet that that is the expression of her life... as a person who who cannot explain a life. It is a chain of days, during which time she has been with the people she loved

And because of that she owns death (in the sense that her life has been what she wanted)... simple as she is
