I don't wanna work all night and day
On writing songs that make the young girls cry
Or playing little solos on the keyboard
So the kids will ask me how and why

I just wanna, I just wanna
I just wanna elevate myself
I just wanna, I just wanna
I just wanna elevate myself

And maybe for a little
Get to where I find it really hard to hate myself
I just wanna, I just wanna
I just wanna elevate myself

I don't wanna stare at stacks of paper all the while
While the world goes by
Tradin' out the weather for a clever lyric
Written by an Ikea light

I just wanna, I just wanna
I just wanna elevate myself
I just wanna, I just wanna
I just wanna elevate myself

And maybe for a little
Get to where I find it really hard to hate myself
I just wanna, I just wanna
I just wanna get up off the shelf
And elevate myself

I don't wanna be a part of all the quality that falls apart these days
I'd rather make an honest sound
And watch it fly around
And then be on my way

I just wanna, I just wanna
I just wanna elevate myself
I just wanna, I just wanna
I just wanna elevate myself

And maybe for a little
Get to where I find it really hard to hate myself
I just wanna, I just wanna
I just wanna, I just wanna
I just wanna, I just wanna
I just wanna, I just wanna
I just wanna, I just wanna
I just wanna elevate myself

General Comment:When Jason was touring through record shops because the band had broken up, I was able to speak with him briefly afterwards, and ask him what he wanted to do next. He told me that if he could have his way he would leave everything and live in the mountains, but he said that was just a dream and couldn't happen realistically. That confession gives new meaning to this song for me. Perhaps he is saying quite literally that he wants to be elevated out of the city life, out of the pollution, and into the mountains to live a simpler life free of his current life/worries. Who knows!

General Comment:Jason's making the comment that lyrics are supposed to be raw and organic, not mass-produced, so to speak.
They're supposed to come from emotions, generally strong and often painful. It's a great song about making
music for the love of music, not for the love of fame or fortune. I respect the band so much for that.

It's not about "getting high", jeez.

General Comment:Only pot-heads would think it's about getting high... then again, they probably think that about every song. Get a life.

My Opinion:If you don't understand what this song is about, you're really stupid.

Hint: It's not about getting high.

Song Meaning:This song is about Jason Lytle not wanting to write songs that he doesn't mean. He just wants to have fun and make himself feel good about his music.

"I don't wanna be a part of all the quality that falls apart these days
I'd rather make an honest sound
    And watch it fly around
And then be on my way"

Instead of writing that "hit single," because it's all fake and of bad quality. He just wants to make music he's happy with, enjoy it, and be done. It's simple. It's wonderful.

General Comment:also I forgot to say that the part of "the quality that falls apart these days " is that of the good bands that have to sell themselves (I'm a big Smashing Pumpkins mexican fan, but this year's concert they're gonna play with miranda and belanova, and that is bubblegum pop and electropop), and also the part about "so the kids will ask me how and why" I think is talking about the guys that say things like "their old stuff is better", or the ones that don't believe in new bands or new genres jus because they think is "too mainstream", Grandaddy just made their music for pleasure. (Iwould like to add that Belanova is a great electropop band from Mexico, but GOD, they just don't fit with The Smashing Pumpkins.)

General Comment:well I agree with all that stuffabout moving to something else, but I think he's also talking about simple but great music,to make music that satisfies himself, and elevates him, as you may agree music is a wonderful drug, it can make you fly high, but he also says his music is just for him and whoever wants to enjoy it, he doesn't make music to sell, "to make the young girls cry" like backstreet boys or something, he just makes music for the pleasure music brings and to "get to where I find it really hard to hate myself", where you feel so good listening to music that you forget everything else, and you forget your problems.
Great band, too bad they had to split, is hard to make relly good music this days and succed, companies won't allow you unless you sell yourself.

General Comment:I'm pretty sure he's basically saying that he's okay with what's going on because He's doing what HE wants to...and not relying on other people to make him feel good.

He is doing this music stuff because he wants to be doing it. He doesn't want to be classified with all the shitty one-hit-wonders. Sometimes it sucks...but...

He's doing what he should be doing with his life..and he feels good about it.
