So this has been.my favorite song of OTEP's since it came out in 2004, and I always thought it was a song about a child's narrative of suffering in an abusive Christian home. But now that I am revisiting the lyrics, I am seeing something totally new.
This song could be gospel of John but from the perspective of Jesus.
Jesus was NOT having a good time up to and during the crucifixion. Everyone in the known world at the time looked to him with fear, admiration or disgust and he was constantly being asked questions. He spoke in "verses, prophesies and curses". He had made an enemy of the state, and believed the world was increasingly wicked and fallen from grace, or that he was in the "mouth of madness".
The spine of atlas is the structure that allows the titan to hold the world up. Jesus challenged the state and in doing so became a celebrated resistance figure. It also made him public enemy #1.
All of this happened simply because he was doing his thing, not because of any agenda he had or strategy.
And then he gets scourged (storm of thorns)
There are some plot holes here but I think it's an interesting interpretation.
I remember when
I remember, I remember when I lost my mind
There was something so pleasant about that place
Even your emotions have an echo in so much space
Mm-hmm, hmm
And when you're out there, without care
Yeah, I was out of touch
But it wasn't because I didn't know enough
I just knew too much
Hmm
Does that make me crazy?
Does that make me crazy?
Does that make me crazy?
Possibly
And I hope that you are having the time of your life
But think twice
That's my only advice
Mm
Come on now, who do you
Who do you, who do you
Who do you think you are?
Hahaha, bless your soul
You really think you're in control?
Well
I think you're crazy
I think you're crazy
I think you're crazy
Just like me
My heroes had the heart
To lose their lives out on a limb
And all I remember, is thinking
I wanna be like them
Mm-hmm
Ever since I was little
Ever since I was little it looked like fun
And there's no coincidence I've come
And I can die when I'm done
But maybe I'm crazy
Maybe you're crazy
Maybe we're crazy
Probably
I remember, I remember when I lost my mind

i think part of this song is about a relationship but not all of it.
"And when you’re out there, without care Yeah I was out of touch But it wasn’t because I didn’t know enough I just knew too much"
sounds like his girl is playin games without caring about him and he knew it but doesnt tell.
"knew too much" might imply that whatever was going on was too much for him and would make him seem crazy.
the second verse might be about him telling that person to keep playing games but cautions against it.
the third verse seems to be about him tho.
thats my interpretation of it so far, im probably wrong but it sounds like it could be right. great song tho.
