Lyrics for Once and Never Again as interpreted by Jenezzy

Once and Never Again Lyrics
19. you're only 19 for God's sake,
Oh, you don't need a boyfriend.
19. you're only 19 for God's sake,
Oh, you don't need a boyfriend.

Look what he's made you do to your arm again,
He said he'd come round but he's gone out with his friends,
And I know how it feels to be your age
and feel the world is caving in.

Another drama by the kitchen sink tonight,
You said you'd cut yourself whilst washing up the knives,
Another week off school won't do you any good,
And I know how it feels to be your age.

19. you're only 19 for God's sake,
Oh, you don't need a boyfriend.
19. you're only 19 for God's sake,
Oh, you don't need a boyfriend.

Come back with me, and find out what you really want,
Come home with me you'll only have to do it once,
'cause I know what it feels like to be your age,
You only have to do it once,
And never again.

Another drama by the kitchen sink tonight,
You said you'd cut yourself whilst washing up the knives,
Another week off school won't do you any good,
And I know how it feels to be your age.

You know I'm not so young,
I spend an hour getting ready every day,
And still I end up looking more or less the same,
But I could show you,
a thing or two.

Oh, I could show you the ropes,
Yes I could show you the ropes,
And I would cut my hair for you,
'Cause I know how it feels.

I know how it feels to be your age,
I know how it feels to be your age,
Oh, how I'd love to feel a girl your age,
Your age,
Once and never again.

I think that this song is about a mother who has a daughter who has an abusive boyfriend:
"you sais you'd cut yourself whilst washing up the knives"
it could mean that she slits her wrists
but alot of lyrics in the song hint at an abusive boyfriend, who treates her like shit, and her mother understands and wants to help
wat do you think?

thats what i thought at first ... until she goes on about how she wants to feel a girl her age (lesbian sex really). The song is trying to convince her he boyfriend is sh** and a waste of her time. She trying to convince her to have a one night stand, and that she can teach her a few thing whether it be about life or about how to have great sex
"But I could show you,
a thing or two."
"Come back with me, and find out what you really want"
"Only have to do it once"
etc

That's mostly right, except it's not lesbian sex. The song was written by a man, it just happens to be sung by a woman.

I agree with the abusive boyfriend thinking. But I dont think it's about sex at all, I believe that the mother is saying to the daughter why waste your life on this boyfriend? In saying "Come back with me and find out what you really want" I think the mother is trying to convey that being 19, the daughter needs to fuck the boyfriend off and live a bit without him so she can see what she really wants. The mother wants to be her age, and shes saying she will regret the things shes doing.

Nice explanation, hadn't actually thought of it like that. what about the line "Oh, how I'd love to feel a girl your age"? That seems to imply a sexual nature to the song. Not that that rules out the mother theory, it just makes it a bit more unlikely.

I think 'feel a girl' might mean 'feel like a girl'. The motherly advice seems right to me as 'you're only 19, you don't need a boyfriend' seems to be telling the girl that because she's so young she doesn't need to cling to this boy.

"look what he's made you do to your arm again"
and
"you said you'd cut yourself whilst washing up the knives"

the boy hurts her so much emotionally that she self harms

Sorry to disappoint you, it isn't about lesbian sex. The song is from a man's point of view. Mr Cox may well claim to write from an androgynous perspective, but he's no Brett Anderson, let me tell you. Still, amazing song.

yeah i agree about the self harming. i basically think that she's young, she really likes this guy, he treats her a bit crap, has no time for her "he said he'd come round byt he's gone out with his friends" which leads her to self harm. this song is definately deeper than you first imagine. absoloutely brillliant though. great band. x

Well of course it refers to self-harming! It really doesn't take a genius to figure that out. Also, I don't think it's about a mother or a lesbian. It was written by Dorian after all. When Kate sings it, it just seems to be some girl convincing her to break up with her boyfriend.

I don't see how it's relevant that it was written by a man -- it's obviously not from a man's perspective. That doesn't make any sense. A man wouldn't tell a girl he knows how it feels to be her age in that situation, for one thing (because he doesn't know how it feels to be a 19 year old girl). And a man who was trying to sleep with her wouldn't be telling her she doesn't need a boyfriend.

I agree with Meinos 100%. This is not being sung from a male perspective. The points Meinos makes are good ones, but as if that wasn't enough, try listening to the lyrics of "Heaven Help The New Girl". That song is definitely sung from a female perspective, no question, and in it she sings:

"So go. Just go. Because you'll never be nineteen again. And I thought I told you before: You don't need a boyfriend."

I disagree Meinos. Being from a different gender doesn't mean that one cannot relate to another's situation. And the way I see it, he's not saying "leave him, be my partner instead", he's saying "leave him, come out with me, we'll have sex, and all will be good".

It's about a girl who has boyfriend who doesn't treat her very well, but she still stays with him anyway because she feels like she has to have a boyfriend. She self-harms because she's a frustrated teenager.

Even though this was written by a guy, I think it is supposed to be from a woman's point of view. She just wants the girl to take her advice because she was in the same situation when she was that age and knows how it is.

This doesn't have to do with lesbian sex, you pervs. xD Some people find sexual undertones in everything.

well, the bloke thing does make sense. he doesn't say 'i know how it feels to be a 19 year old GIRL' does he? he's sympathizing with her cos he thinks she could do better and that she should just have fun when she's that young- she doesn't need to tie herself to a boyfriend. he remembers what it was like to be young, it seems like a long time ago and maybe he wants to relive some lost youth with a one night stand, and maybe teach her how to act more her age.

I feel as tho this song is about a 19yo girl having an older friend who has been where she has and is much wiser. I only think this because I'm 19 and have a best mate in her early 30s.
However it definitely makes more sense to see it from the mother perspective.
Whatever it means, it's a great song.

In my opinion it is about an older girl giving a younger girl advise. I don't think it's about lesbianism and i don't think it's from a male perspective.

The see the line 'I will cut my hair for you' as the older girl being very sympathetic, she's saying 'look, if i was a boy i'd prove to you that relationships don't have to be like this', she's just trying to make the 19 year old girl feel better and understand that this guy is a jerk.

The line 'How i'd love to feel a girl your age' is quite confusing, and i can understand why people get lesbian ideas from this but i think she just means she want to feel LIKE a girl of 19 again (even though the line doesn't say this), but just for a second, maybe jusy for a day

I'm not quite sure, but this is what i get from the lyrics.

i just have to say that i agree with origami0203.

its about an older woman and she's trying to convinve the teen that her bf is a jerk..simple as that..doesn't matter who wrote the song....man or woman...men write books from women's prospectives..memoires of a geisha? although that's kinda a cheap shot..but still

yer u can say 'i'd love to feel a girl your age again' without meaning physically feel. think about the sentence again, it does make grammatical sense, eg. i'd love to feel that boy of 10 again, if ur talking about urself, im a 17 yr old boy lol.

fourganger, Dorian Cox did indeed write the song, but like all other LB songs, he wrote it with the intent of a female voice. If you followed that logic with all songs Cox wrote, would you say "You Could Have Both" is written from a male perspective? Thats ludicrous.

Anyways, I think the song is about advising a younger girl about her terrible boyfriend and how she is being overdramatic, but with semi-jealous undertones from the speaker who wants to be young again but not experience the same shit. I do feel like she is making slight sexual advances towards the younger girl, but this is subtle.

this song is neither told from a man's perspective, nor does it have any kind of lesbian persuasion.
"feel a girl your age" has nothing to do with physically feeling anything. the long blondes are british. it's just a typically british way of saying "feeling LIKE a girl your age." also, "come out with me," and "you'll only have to do it once," are not related at all. "you only have to do it once," references how you only have to be nineteen once.
i think it's very probable that this could be told from the perspective of a mother or perhaps (but seemingly less likely) a much older sister. "you know I'm not so young/ i spend an hour getting ready every day/ and still I end up looking more or less the same/ but I could show you a thing or two." basically, the mom is saying that even though she's "not so young" anymore and she might seem out-of-touch with what her daughter's going through, she still remembers what it was like to be a young person experiencing love/lust for the first time. she's telling her daughter that she shouldn't put so much energy into worrying about this particular guy because she has so much more that she can still experience.

Just because you're telling a girl she doesn't need a BOYfriend, doesn't mean it's a lesbian saying it. The guy is not sayin 'hey bitch, have eaningless sex with me once', he's saying 'I've been there, I'll treat you better than your boyfriend, at least when we're having sex'.This guy is probably late-20s, early-30s, realising that he isn't as young as he used to be.

whoever has written it, from whatever persepective, he could have chosen far les challenging lyrics than these,, they did not try at all to avoid interpretations like these. It seems very plausible to me that there's a lesbian aspect to this. there is definetly something implied here. "Oh, how I'd love to feel a girl your age,
Your age,"
and:
"But I could show you,
a thing or two.

Oh, I could show you the ropes,
Yes I could show you the ropes,
"

I agree with The $t!G that there is a lesbian aspect. Like the line "I would cut my hair for you", what else is that suppost to mean? I think that was the writer's intention; to take some normal topic like a girl giving another girl advice then mixing in a subtle, "i actually want to get in your pants" vibe to make it campy and fun.
