I cut your nails
And comb your hair
I carry you
Down the stairs

I wanted to see right through
From the other side
I wanted to walk a trip
With no end in sight

The moment we believe that we have never met
Another kind of love, it's easy to forget
When we are all alone and waiting for some treat
We have a thing in common, this was meant to be

You close my eyes
And soothe my ears
You heal my wounds
And dry my tears

On the inside of this marble house
I grow
And the seeds I slow
Grow persistent too

The moment we believe that we have never met
Another kind of love, it's easy to forget
When we are all alone and waiting for some treat
We have a thing in common, this was meant to be

That as we shoulder our
What is it's name
What's your sin
Say it again

As the ghost pass by
Can you still follow me?
It must be sane
When it's on TV

I raise my hands to heaven for curiosity
I don't know what to ask for
What has it got for me?
The eyes see how hideous this marble house can be
Somethings I do for money somethings I do for free

General Comment:It's about the struggle between male and feminine aspects. When she talks about shouldering and asking what's its name i think she's asking what 'side' they listen to, good, evil, etc, do they stand only for themselves or for togetherness

General Comment:I've always taught that this is just normal love song, but it just crossed my mind that maybe tells about sibling love. Older sister takes care for her brother etc

The moment we believe that we have never met
Another kind of love, it's easy to forget

Siblings actually never met because the other one just has always exist for the younger. And the love is not romantic love everyone is talking about, it's another kind of love.

When we are all alone and waiting for some treat
We have a thing in common, this was meant to be

They do have the thing in common, same parents and home and genes.

General Comment:First off, I think the lyrics are wrong. After listening like ten times, this is what I think they really are:

I cut your nails and comb your hair
I carry you down the stairs
I wanted to see right through from the other side
I wanted to walk a trail with no end in sight

The moment we believe that we have never met
Another kind of love it's easy to forget
When we are all alone then we do both agree
We have a thing in common this was meant to be

You close my eyes and soothe my ears
You heal my wounds and dry my tears
On the inside of this marble house I grow
And the seeds I sow will grow up prisoners too

The moment we believe that we have never met
Another kind of love it's easy to forget
When we are all alone then we do both agree
We have a thing in common this was meant to be

    Now as we shoulder our
    What is it's name
    What's your sin
    Say it again

    If it goes faster
    Can you still follow me?
    It must be sane
    When it's on TV

I raise my hands to heaven for curiosity
I don't know what to ask for
What has it done for me?
    The others say we're hiding
It's as forward as can be
Some things I do for money
Some things I do for free

    Now, for the meaning:
I think it is about a relationship, but an insecure one. The female seems to be very over-protective of her lover, maybe because of loneliness or whatnot. This can be seen in the first verse. When it moves onto the chorus, I think it is about neither of them really being sure of the relationship, but when they are alone, they know they love each other. The man's role is that he knows he is being 'protected', but he feels more imprisoned at times. There are also hints of arguing or fighting in the line about saying the sins again.

Then, in the 'if it goes faster' line, I think it's about wanting to pick up the pace of the relationship, but not knowing if the other will join. This fits in well with the tv reference as well. I do think the final lines are about marriage being a religious thing though, because of the curiosity, and because of the 'what has it done for me?' line. Makes it seem bitter about the ritual, but still wanting it. The last lines could be in reference to a job that is similar in situation, but doing what she does for him out of love.

My Interpretation:Like most others, I believe this song is about marriage.
But instead of the wife being the victim, I actually saw her as more of the abuser and the husband is the victim.
Which seems rather backwards but here's what I got (everything included)-

"I cut your nails and comb your hair
I carry you down the stairs"
    - As his girlfriend, she takes care of him.

"I wanted to see right through from the other side
I wanted to walk a trail with no end in sight"
    - She wanted to be his wife, look at him from not only the view of a girlfriend but as a soul mate. The "no end in sight" signifies their eternal vows.

"The moment we believe that we have never met
Another kind of love it's easy to forget"
    - When they get into arguments and fights, it's as though they are complete strangers. And the "other kind of love" is the abuse that she brings. She's claiming it's for his own good.

"When we are all alone then we do both agree
We have a thing in common this was meant to be"
    - And this is when their fights have cooled and they realize that there is definitely something there between them that means they should stay together. If anyone has ever been in any type of abusive relationship (violence, emotional, etc.)they will tell you that although it's almost always bad, there are still those fleeting moments where it seems as though there's something still worth sticking around for.

"You close my eyes and soothe my ears
You heal my wounds and dry my tears"
    - She takes care of him, makes him feel safe and secure.

"On the inside of this marble house I grow
And the seeds I sow will grow up prisoners too"
    - I take the marble house to be his wife, and through her is he only able to continue living securely. And as she is cold and hard towards him (marble), he has become a prisoner. The seed is his son, who he had brought into the world. And his son will grow up a prisoner to his mother as well.

    "Now where's your shoulder
    What is it's name
    What's your scent
    Say it again"
    - This is her controlling him, having him tell her things that she has put into his head; "Where is your shoulder, what is it's name" ; "Say it again"

"If it goes faster can you still follow me
It must be safe when it's on TV"
    - She's asking if she goes any harder on him if he would still be able to stay with her. Now this is a vague guess, but I'm assuming that she got her tactics from the television dramas she watched where other women controlled their men.

"I raise my hands to heaven of curiosity
I don't know what to ask for
What has it got for me?"
    - This I view as being said by the husband. He prays for something good to come out of it all, but at the same time he has lost hope; "What has it got for me?"

    "The others say we're hiding
It's as forward as can be"
    - Again, the husband. People may have noticed that there was something wrong between the two, but he assures them that everything is okay, and believes it as through it all he still loves his wife.

"Some things I do for money
Some things I do for free"
    - This is from the wife, saying that she manipulates him for his money but then cares for him out of love.

General Comment:Okay, mine will be a bit strange, but bear with me. Doctor Who fans may understand this a bit better, since the TARDIS is generally accepted as a sentient machine. I think the female voice is a female machine. She take care of the male voice, not in a literal sense. It is her fantasy of sorts. She finally gets to speak to her pilot or her operator. DW fans know that the Doctor brings home 'strays' or companions, which in a sense may be considered, in the darkest sense, 'prisoners,' since he does enchant them in a way and doesn't always leave them in the best of conditions. *Spoilers ahead* As we saw in "The Doctor's Wife* the Doctor's only true and lasting companion is the TARDIS and their relationship is one that is codependent, but very loving. When they are alone, he calls her pet names. Even when they are not alone, she takes care of him. She has even saved him a number of times. I could parallel this to River Song and get really deep, but I won't go there for brevity's sake. Sorry to completely meta and geek out on y'all, but I HAD to share with someone. Thank you for your patience! This song (and obviously DW), has been an obsession of mine for some time now. :-)

My Interpretation:I get an inkling that this song is about some kind of mortician, or someone else who deals in the dead, who imagines a romance (or who knows, maybe she's a schizo) as she is prepping a body. She trims his nails, and combs his hair, and carries him down the stairs. I think that the trail with no end refers to the eternity and mysteriousness of death.

To me, the Marble House itself is a metaphor for death (using the image of a tomb or mausoleum to draw the parallel, also the hardness of marble illustrates death as inescapable, but when he says that he broke the marble house, it could mean that he somehow got through to her, transcending from death).

The lines "where's your shoulder/what's its name" and "the moment we believe that we have never met/Another kind of love, it's easy to forget" are both about the fact that she has never actually met him. I think that the shoulder in question is not a literal shoulder, but the shoulder he cried on, like she's asking about his lover or friend or something. The other line, I'd say is about the fact that this is all imagined, and if she allows herself to believe that, the entire thing would be forgotten.

When he says That the seeds he sows will grow up prisoners, too, he says that everyone dies (everyone becomes a prisoner of the marble house).

I don't mean to say that I think it's about necrophilia, or anything like that, just a mortician daydreaming at work (like we all do). As she is making him up for his funeral, or viewing, or Shiva, or what have you, she imagines his life and maybe what could have happened if they had ever met while he was alive. It is, to me, about the romance in death.

At the end of the day, this is easy to forget-- after all, she sees a lot of dead people. She raises her hands to the heavens, wondering what is in store for her, wondering about the afterlife, and of death, maybe what will be done with her once she herself dies.

Of course when there's no one else in the room, they agree, seeing as how the him that she imagines is not even real, just a figment of her imagination, so it makes sense that they would agree (I guess a dead man can't disagree).

What they have in common is that they are both human, and any possible number of things she could imagine.

I understand that this is probably not what the writers of the song had in mind when writing it, but it is the image that is painted in my mind when I listen to it.

My Interpretation:Wow, interesting to see everyone's different interpretations of this song. Personally, I've always thought that this song is about taking care of a family member with alzheimers or a like illness, which is quite a depressing interpretation. Probably in no small part because of my interpretation, I think it's one of the saddest songs I've ever heard. :(

I cut your nails and comb your hair
I carry you down the stairs
I wanted to see right through from the other side
I wanted to walk a trail with no end in sight

(The singer has some kind of care responsibility to the person in question, they want to connect with them and 'I wanted to walk a trail with no end in sight' refers to them not wanting to die or think about death.)

The moment we believe that we have never met
Another kind of love it's easy to forget
When we are all alone then we do both agree
We have a thing in common this was meant to be

(They feel unfamiliar to one another, but they have something in common. I think that they seem unfamiliar because the person who is being taken care of has alzheimers, they thing they have in common is a family bond and so they are meant to take care of them, although the bond of love they once had has been forgotten by one or both of them.)

You close my eyes and soothe my ears
You heal my wounds and dry my tears
On the inside of this marble house I grow
And the seeds I sow will grow up prisoners too

(From the perspective of the person being taken care of, they feel trapped in their body and fear that their children will feel trapped in theirs too. I think these lines are sort of suggesting that all human bodies are prisons.)

The moment we believe that we have never met
Another kind of love it's easy to forget
When we are all alone then we do both agree
We have a thing in common this was meant to be

    (Same as above.)

    Now where's your shoulder
    What is it's name
    What's your scent
    Say it again

(Confusion on the part of the person being taken care of, not sure who is taking care of them.)

If it goes faster can you still follow me
It must be safe when it's on TV

(Not sure, perhaps they're just having a conversation while watching TV?)

I raise my hands to heaven of curiosity
I don't know what to ask for
What has it got for me?

(The singer doesn't believe in a Judeo-Christian afterlife.)

    The others say we're hiding
It's as forward as can be
Some things I do for money
Some things I do for free

(I think the last two lines are about the fact that caring responsibilities are work that is done for free usually, although people can also be paid to do them. A lot of women are employed in caring professions as well as having caring responsibilities at home, so the things they do for money and for free can be quite similar.)
