I felt the earth on Monday
It moved beneath my feet
In the form of a morning paper
Laid out for me to see
Saw his face in a color picture
I recognized the name
Could not stop staring at the
Face I'd never see again

It's a shame to awake in a world of pain
What does it mean when
the war is taking over?
It's the same every day
I heard my name
Why can't they say that
The world be left to hold her

The whole world
World over
It's World Wide Suicide

The whole world
World over
It's World Wide Suicide

Medals on a wooden mantle
Next to a handsome face
That the President took for granted
Writing checks that others pay
And in all the madness
Thought become numb and naive
So much to talk about
And nothing for us to say

It's the same every day
And the wave won't break
Tell you to pray while
the devil's on his shoulder
Laying claims to the tainted soldier said
I'm not a quitting
The truth's already out there

The whole world
World over
It's World Wide Suicide

The whole world
World over
It's World Wide Suicide

Looking in the eyes of the fallen
You've got to know there's another
Another
Another
Another
Another

waaaaayyyyyyyyyyy

It's a shame to awake in a world of pain
What does it mean when
the war is taking over
It's the same every day
And the wave won't break
Tell you to pray while
the devil's on his shoulder

The whole world
World over
It's World Wide Suicide

The whole world
World over
It's World Wide Suicide

The whole world
World over
It's World Wide Suicide

The whole world
World over
It's World Wide Suiciiiiiiiiiide

General Comment:This song may be about how every day, we wake up to war, tragedy, and plauge and how we can take ourselves away from it all.

General Comment:DivineDemon - "But to me, as many others similiar to him, have sunken into the pulling vortex of the "COOL" left wing, anti-war political stature."

Pearl Jam have always written songs about those topics. Listen to Glorified G from bay back in 1993. Or better yet, Do the Evolution.

General Comment:Even if you don't agree with the political opinions behind this song, we should appreciate the deeper significance of its bases around Pat Tillman. Tillman was a pro football player who went to fight in Iraq and died by what the government told his family was a result of "enemy fire" when in reality, he was shot and killed as a result of "friendly fire." The government uses this propaganda to fill American's heads with the nationalistic biases. That is really, in my opinion, where Pearl Jam was going with this song.

General Comment:DivineDemon, I think they were referring to the nu-metal scene, but whatever...

A great song off a great album...sounds like it could've been on Vs. The meaning of the song is quite literal compared to their other songs...it's about the mishandling of the war in Iraq by George Bush. The chorus kind of strays off the course, but the "world wide suicide" probably refers to nuclear war. If one country bombs another, others will retaliate, and soon, in essence, every country will have committed "suicide".

I have to say that I love Eddie Vedder's singing on this track.

General Comment:Vedder is greatly respected and for good reason, he was a lyrical genius, to a point. Everything was from the heart in is word. But to me, as many others similiar to him, have sunken into the pulling vortex of the "COOL" left wing, anti-war political stature. Ignorance is 2nd nature to those who have left their minds in the hands of others who obviously, do not live in the real world. This has no berring on what TEN has done to rock in general, much less the sub-genre in which Pearl Jam, along with other greats, honed.

    PS
The only joke in Metal is in the simple minds of those who joke about it. Explain to us why your wrong opinion about metal is so funny and clever. One-liners are for pussy's.

General Comment:Hmmm...I always viewed GNR as overrated.

Appetite for Destruction is a landmark album, but the pretentious Use Your Illusion albums have too much filler, although the highs are very high. The Spaghetti Incident and GNR Lies albums were also underwhelming, but the highs are extremely high. The lows just go too low. And Axl Rose has spent too long on the Chinese Democracy album. And I don't even know any of the new members besides Axl Rose. It's hard to compare GNR and Pearl Jam. GNR are arena rock/heavy metal, while Pearl Jam are grunge/alternative. I reckon when Pearl Jam ends their music career, they'll be revered as much as GNR are.
