My Interpretation:
All of it makes more sense if you see it as HIM being left first and starting to realize it IS for the best. Note this part "But without you I can finally see...runaway" meaning the relationship has already ended before he finally realized that he DOES want her to runaway. "I'll attack" is I WILL attack meaning she hasn't given him a reason to yet because she's the one who turned her back on him but "I'll attack" a warning for if she returns- that's why some lines say, "NOW I'll attack" because before he wanted her but now sees he really doesn't.
"I won't suffer, be broken, get tired, or wasted, surrender to nothing" won't surrender to depression or let the split take him down or even turn to hurting and trashing himself (drown his sorrow in alcohol or drugs).
"I'll give up what I started And stopped it from end to beginning." Note he stopped the end first "from end to beginning" as in stop wanting her back FIRST then finally letting go of the relationship altogether. And now a new day is here because he now sees he's finally free from her and the hold she still had on him even after being abandoned by her...
(So go ahead and runaway because NOW I'll attack. Go ahead and chase yourself "find yourself" like you wanted. I would have stayed with you forever but I was forced to let go.)
"It ended for both of us faster than a..." was beginning to think how much it hurt...
"kill off this thinking. It's starting to sink in. I'm losing control now" starting to think about even when he tries not to. Sinking in and losing control to feeling how much the pain of his sadness actually hurts...
"But without you I can finally see" NO! it's for the best. I see that now.
"Your promises they look like lies. Your honesty's like a back that hides a knife" You don't love me like you said; you left and stabbed me in the back.
"I promise you (promise you)I promise you (promise you) I am finally free" but I promise you I'm okay without you. I'm free from you at last.

All of these lines refer to someone or something Jared has "freed" himself from. He is stressing individual thought, self-reliance, non-comformation. Ralph Waldo Emerson said it best, "To be great is to be misunderstood." Leto has basically taken these words and run with them.

Drugs have no soul so it can't end for drugs and also drugs can't run away. this line applies to drugs in that they can "promise" happiness and "lie" leaving you depressed and destitute-
