You've got this new head
Filled up with smoke
I've got my veins all tangled close
To those jukebox bars you frequent
They're the safest place to hide

A long night spent with your most obvious weaknesses
You start shaking at the thought
You are everything I want
Because you are everything I'm not

And we lay, we lay together
Just not too close, too close
And we lay, we lay together
Just not too close, too close

I just wanna break you down so badly
I trip over everything you say
I just wanna break you down so badly
In the worst way

My inarticulate store bought
Hangover hobby kit it talks
It says 'You, oh, you are so cool'
Scissor shaped across the bed
You are red, violent red
You hollow out my hungry eyes
You hollow out my hungry eyes

And we lay, we lay together
Just not too close, too close
(How close is close enough?)
And we lay, we lay together
Just not too close, too close
(How close is close enough?)

I just wanna break you down so badly
I trip over everything you say
I just wanna break you down so badly
In the worst way

I just wanna break you down so badly
I trip over everything you say
I just wanna break you down so badly
In the worst way

I'm gonna make damn sure
That you can't ever leave
No you won't ever get too far from me
You won't ever get too far from me

I'll make damn sure
That you can't ever leave
No you won't ever get too far from me
You won't ever get too far from me

I just wanna break you down so badly
I trip over everything you say
I just wanna break you down so badly
In the worst way

General Comment:I think its about a guy who is in love with a girl who is not nessisarily better than him, just different. Like a bad boy dating a good girl kinda thing. "your most obvious weakness" is him and the part about you are everything I'm not is about how different they are. Because shes a good girl she doesn't REALLY want to get involved with him. so they sleep together but she doesnt want to get attached to this guy because she thinks he's lower than her (but not too close).
He obviously likes her and wants to get closer but how close is close enough?
"i just wanna break you down so badly" i feel like this is how he wants to bring her to his level. maybe he feels kinda angry that she thinks shes better
and he wants to make sure she stays because he likes her.
the verse about scissor shapes and violent red is about sex. the red is her skin because after you have sex you're hot and red. but they dont really get along because of their differences. after shas sex with her him just gets kinda disgusted with her "you hollow out my hungry eyes" meaning after they had sex she just changes into someone else who is high and mighty and wouldnt have sex with a guy like him.

General Comment:I think this song is about someone being in love with/ liking someone older than them. The lyrics:

"And we lay, we lay together
Just not too close, too close
    (How close is close enough?)"

Meaning they don't want to get in trouble because of the age difference and they just want to break the other person down because they care so much about trying to keep things on the down low or make the relationship seem like there isn't one.
I'm probably wrong though, it was just my interpretation.

My Interpretation:I love listening to this song; it immediately brings back memories from high school and elementary school when I honestly didn't know anything about the band, I just loved this song and had it on repeat for hours.

When I was younger I thought that this song was about abuse, but now that I'm older I feel that it has a whole different meaning. (Obviously, the song is going to mean a million different things to a million different people.)

I now think that it is about a couple who who used to be together, but no longer is. The guy in the relationship, the singer/narrator, still clearly loves the girl, but for whatever reason he knows that they are not good for each other. I guess it's about that whole idea that sometimes love isn't enough to keep a relationship together...sometimes no matter how much in love you are with someone, it just isn't meant to be, and it's better for both people to be a part, even if it is painful. The line, "And we lay, we lay together just not too close, too close" makes me think of the former couple who are now friends, hanging out and resisting the urge to hook up or just get back together. They're questioning the new boundaries because they were used to being romantically involved, and now that they're not, they're not sure "how close is too close."

I don't think that this is a "stalker song." The guy evidently feels so much for the girl, which to me suggests that they have a past and are somehow emotionally connected. Despite the tone/melody of this song, it has always seemed like a sad song to me - trying to keep your distance from someone you'd give just about anything to be with, because you're putting their well being above your own.

General Comment:I think it's an innocent guy chasing after a party girl. They are polar oppisites and she does not/ is afraid of commitment. She sleeps with him but does not commit to him.

General Comment:This song is basically one those "If I can't have you, then no one can" songs.

General Comment:Well after a bit of comment reading a new meaning hit me.

You've got this new head filled up with smoke (Confusion as to what she should do)
I've got my veins all tangled close (he's always nearby, drinking maybe)
To those jukebox bars you frequent (They're at a bar)
They're the safest place to hide (She's there to hide from her thoughts and he his problems via booze)

A long night spent with your most obvious weaknesses (A long night spent with him)
You start shaking at the thought (She regrets it)
You are everything I want (He still wants her)
Because you are everything I'm not (He thinks she's better than him)

And we lay, we lay together (They're together in bed)
Just not too close, too close (But she's keeping her distance)
(How close is close enough?) (and he wants to be closer)
And we lay, we lay together
Just not too close, too close
    (How close is close enough?)

I just wanna break you down so badly (He wants to fix what went wrong)
I trip over everything you say (He can't grasp the meaning of her words anymore)
I just wanna break you down so badly
    In the worst way

(I tend to think of this as like a flashback to an earlier night.. And that the guy is a drunk. He's trying to help himself to make her happy, but it fails)
    My inarticulate store bought
    Hanvgover hobby kit it talks
It says 'You, oh, you are so cool'
    Scissor shaped across the bed
You are red, violent red (Umm.. it describes the way she's laying, and... she's been hit? I dunno.)
You hollow out my hungry eyes (He lost his desire for her, or at least for that night.)
You hollow out my hungry eyes

And we lay, we lay together
Just not too close, too close
    (How close is close enough?)
And we lay, we lay together
Just not too close, too close
    (How close is close enough?)

I just wanna break you down so badly
I trip over everything you say
I just wanna break you down so badly
    In the worst way

I just wanna break you down so badly
I trip over everything you say
I just wanna break you down so badly
    In the worst way

I'm gonna make damn sure (He's worried she'll leave)
That you can't ever leave (and is going to prevent her from leaving)
No you won't ever get too far from me
You won't ever get too far from me

    I'll make damn sure
    That you can't ever lave
No you won't ever get too far from me
You won't ever get too far from me

I just wanna break you down so badly
I trip over everything you say
I just wanna break you down so badly
    In the worst way

It's probably wrong, but to me it makes sense in a way.

General Comment:For me this is about how you feel when an ex comes back into your life. Part of you is still in love with and attached to them so you're eager to get back together, and in a way you become obsessed with winning their love again. But a bigger part of you is digusted with who they have become since you were last together, leaving you with a desire to "break" them down "in the worst way". Twisted, but truthful.

General Comment:You want to make it so they feel the same as you. You've found yourself wanting someone and want to break them down as weak as they have made you.

General Comment:I don't think this song is about wanting to date someone out of your league. I went through a relationship that turned emotionally abusive, and I related this song a lot. I've always heard it as "break you down", not bring. and I constantly felt he was breaking me down to make me too weak to get out of it, hence the "you won't ever get too far from me" line.

General Comment:just realized- "Scissor shaped across the bed, you are red, violent red," probably refers to the fact that they were having sex- her legs were spread like scissors, and virgins sometimes bleed during their first time. Also, I think the thing about the hobby kit is referring to how during a hangover, people like to be told that they're cool to make them feel better/ they want people to think they were cool for drinking in the first place. Also the thing about the store being "inarticulate" and the hobby kit being able to talk seem to kind of parody each other... so... maybe the speaker is having difficulty finding the words to say to her? yeah, idk
