"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him.
There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.
So you think it's funny
That you've been calling me all of the time
Every day
Oh, honey
I don't want to be following and falling behind
If you're gonna be walking away
And I don't know why I wouldn't follow
Wouldn't follow
You got me looking up even when I'm falling down
You got me crawling out of my skin
You got me wondering why I am underneath this big old sky
Stopping the loving getting in
Yes, I'm stopping the loving getting in
Now you say it's easy
That you been falling for all of my charm
And getting lost in my smile
Never ceases to amaze me
When I'm chancing my arm
That I still do it with style
And now I hope you'll be with me tomorrow
With me tomorrow
You got me looking up even when I'm falling down
You got me crawling out of my skin
You got me wondering why I am underneath this big old sky
Stopping the loving getting in
Well, I'm stopping the loving getting in
Yes, I'm stopping the loving getting in
Ba-ra-ra-ra-ra
Do-da, do-do-da-da, do-da, uh-uh
Yeeh-eeh, oh, oh, oh
Ba-ra-dam, ba-ra-dam, da, da, da, yah
Oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh-oh
Yeh-eh ah, oh
You got me looking up even when I'm falling down
You got me crawling out of my skin
You got me wondering why I am underneath this big old sky
Stopping the loving getting in
That you've been calling me all of the time
Every day

This song is written as the perspective of the boys in the street, as a whole, and what path they are going to choose as they get older and grow into men. (This is why the music video takes place in an orphanage.) The seen, and unseen collective suffering is imbedded in the boys’ mind, consciously or subconsciously, and is haunting them. Which path will the boys choose? Issac Hayes is the voice of reason, maybe God, the angel on his shoulder, or the voice of his forefathers from beyond the grave who can see the big picture and are pleading with the boys not to continue the violence and pattern of killing their brothers, but to rise above. The most beautiful song and has so many levels. Racism towards African Americans in America would not exist if everyone sat down and listened to this song and understood the history behind the words. The power, fear, pleading in RZA and Ghostface voices are genuine and powerful. Issac Hayes’ strong voice makes the perfect strong father figure, who is possibly from beyond the grave.

“Blue” is a song about a love that is persisting in the discomfort of the person experiencing the emotion. There aren’t many things that’ll hurt more than giving love a chance against your better judgement only to have your heart crushed yet again. Ed Sheeran tells such a story on “Page.” On this track, he is devastated to have lost his lover and even more saddened by the feeling that he may never move on from this.

“Plastic Bag” is a song about searching for an escape from personal problems and hoping to find it in the lively atmosphere of a Saturday night party. Ed Sheeran tells the story of his friend and the myriad of troubles he is going through. Unable to find any solutions, this friend seeks a last resort in a party and the vanity that comes with it.
“I overthink and have trouble sleepin’ / All purpose gone and don’t have a reason / And there’s no doctor to stop this bleedin’ / So I left home and jumped in the deep end,” Ed Sheeran sings in verse one. He continues by adding that this person is feeling the weight of having disappointed his father and doesn’t have any friends to rely on in this difficult moment. In the second verse, Ed sings about the role of grief in his friend’s plight and his dwindling faith in prayer. “Saturday night is givin’ me a reason to rely on the strobe lights / The lifeline of a promise in a shot glass, and I’ll take that / If you’re givin’ out love from a plastic bag,” Ed sings on the chorus, as his friend turns to new vices in hopes of feeling better.
I can't believe no one has commented on this song, it’s my favorite. I have Rhapsody and they have a live Rolling Stone Original album with this song, black horse and a cherry tree, other side of the world, & Miniature disasters on it! I totally recommend checking it out. I think it’s about a girl who has been hurt in the past & is afraid to trust again, but this guy’s not giving up on her. She’s falling fast, but is afraid to act on her feelings cause she’s scared that he won’t stick around for long . She knows she’s in deep and tries to resist him but when she’s with him, she feels wonderful & wonders why she’s resisting him at all.
Wow I just was going threw the CD and this song got my attention..............such great song, yeah ruby has said what needed to be said so...................anyways great song!!!!!!!
yea awesome song
My favorite line is: You got me looking up, Even when I'm falling down.
I wish the song was about hope and inspiration...because this line is a great start. I interpret it as saying: "Even though everything has gone to hell, you still manage to help me look up and give me hope"
I might have to steal this line for a song wink
rubygirl18 has pretty much got it down..:-) i really like this song because at the time i got her cd, this sort of thing was happening to me, i was falling for him, but wasn't sure if i should...etc.etc.etc. but he didn't give up on me. [he still hasn't 6mo.1wk!] lol
i think though...[listening to it now] instead of "when I'm pinching my arm and I still do it with style"
isn't it: "when i'm chancing my arm that i still do it with style" ...?
This song always makes me thing of Doctor Who...lol I donno why. Melvin, I had the same thing! except I thought is was Chanceing my heart
cool song!
It's also kinda about... If you fancy someone just get on with it!
This song caught my attention right away. The track, without vocals, is so laid back, that it reminds me of myself. This song to me means just what rubygirl18 described it as. This is my favorite song!
