Lyrics for Deep Sea Diver as interpreted by mattd23

Deep Sea Diver Lyrics
I'm a deep sea diver with my fins.
And underneath your current, I do swim.
A baker's dozen, thirteen pearls.
And when I try them on my toes do curl.
'Cause you, you got everthing that I want.
A car, the house, the dog.
You got everything I want.

Just keep me a while.
Just keep it a while.
Just keep me a while.
Just keep it a while.

I'm a deep sea diver losing air.
And around your laps I swim, but you don't care.

Uh, you may never read this as it was so long ago, but for anyone else, I do believe the line is "a baker's dozen, thirteen pearls" as a baker's dozen, is, in fact, thirteen of something. Thank you.

wow, it's weird that this song doesn't have many comments on it. This is one of those songs to sit and close your eyes to and just relax. I remember seeing them on The Dive once a while back, the video to this is very good as well.

ahha yeah it took me several times to figure out the first part of the song. i love how mysteriously hard it is to figure out the lyrics. just makes the song soo much better. i wish they had some songs from Yellow House on here! :-/ Someone needs to figure it out!

it's not "where i travel on my toes do curl", it's "when i try them on my toes do curl" referring to the thirteen pearls he was previously talking about.

It's "a car, the house, the dog"... seems like a reference to divorce - or a homosexual breakup. Not sure.

The song could be about longing, or envy, or a drug addiction, or about someone who is "kept", or all of the above. It all kind of goes hand in hand.

Lovely song, nonetheless. And the video is cool too!

i know it's a minor nuance, but i believe he may say,
"And around you laps I swim, but you don't care." Instead of "your". I could be wrong, but it makes more sense to me. It is a great video.

this is such a beautiful song.
i didn't get it at first, but i put a bit of thought into it.

i think maybe this song is about giving someone you love everything they've ever wanted/needed and getting nothing in return.
it's like he's trying to prove his love to someone by giving them material things, hoping that they'll love him back.
but they don't even notice, or even care that he loves them.

"just keep me awhile, just keep it awhile"
he knows this person's never going to love him back, but he keeps giving and giving, still hoping, and nearly begging them to care.. even if it's just for a small amount of time.

i'm not sure if what i said made sense, i understand it in my head but it's hard for me to put it in words.

either way, lovely lovely song.

i'm pretty sure this song is about divorce or separation. personally, i try to compare it to another song which has similar emotion. it's miss Regina Spektor's ode to divorce. especially, those verses "i need your money, it's help me i need your love" likewise, in Grizzly Bear's deep see diver has verses like 'Cause you, you got everthing that I want.
A car, the house, the dog.You got everything I want.
all these things are properties which belong to them as a couple. and when their relationship ends, one of them has to lose more than the properties. you can feel that both narrators are still longing their spouse. in fact, we all know that they completely desperate. it's a beautiful melancholy song.

I think it's about longing for someone that is more put-together than you. Maybe its just my interpretation but I think the "the car, the house, the dog" line is referring to someone who has things which represent stability and maturity. The narrator longs to be a part of that kind of stable, deep relationship, but the person has no interest in him.

i think this song is about liking someone way more than the person likes you, and just the hope that the relationship will last just for a little while longer... theyre in control and you are completely worthless to them...and you know it. they will forget about you really easily when the relationship eventually dies.. and you know it...so sad. beautiful song.

Deep Sea Diver

I’m a deep sea diver with my fins
And underneath your currents I do swim
A baker’s dozen, thirteen pearls
And when I try them on my toes do curl

Cuz you, you’ve got all I want
The car, the house, the dog

Just keep it away
Just keep it away, oh yeah
Just keep it away
Just keep it away, oh yeah

I’m a deep sea diver losing air
And around you laps I swim but you don’t care

I like the choice of making this song about divers. Diving is often an alien experience, especially if you go down really deep. Sort of makes me feel the narrator has never been in this situation before and is awe-struck and confused. =D
