Lyrics for Vein of Stars as interpreted by brettjrob

Vein of Stars Lyrics
Who knows?
Maybe there isn't a vein of stars calling out my name
No glow from above our heads
Nothing there to see you down on your knees

Twenty-five, twenty-six, twenty-seven
Off in the future, maybe there ain't no heaven
It's just you and me, and maybe it's just as well
And if there ain't no heaven, maybe there ain't no hell

Who knows?
Maybe there isn't a vein of stars calling out my name
Who knows?
Maybe there isn't a vein of stars calling out my name

Who knows?
(Calling out my name)
Who knows?
(Calling out my name)
Who knows?
(Calling out my name)
Who knows?
(Calling out my name)

Calling out my name
(Calling out my name)

Who knows?
(Calling out my name)
Who knows?
(Calling out my name)

Calling out my name

Vein of stars, I'm guessing this is referring to a higher being? To fit in context with the rest of the album...fear of death, maybe this is asking do we fear death because of a higher being?

This song makes me sad. "And if there ain't no heaven, maybe there ain't no hell" ok then so what's the point? There's just nothing after this life? That thought makes me sad. Is that what he's saying, that this is it, there's nothing more than this life? I can't fathom that. It would just seem like such a waste.

Humans need reason. We weren't meant to understand everything, but it still tortures me that if we need reason, then why can't we have it? Maybe it's about finding comfort even if there isn't heaven or hell. In "The Spark that Bled", it suggests that religion might just be a form of comfort.

Human beings, as we are now, can never really understand the afterlife or our place in the universe so to try and figure it out or judge it is just bogus. At least that's what I think it means.

Amc- if there ain't no heaven, then that means there probably ain't no hell... which is a GOOD thing, since according to the doctrine of the Abrahamic religions, if there was a hell, most of us would go there. So look forward that all that's going to happen when you die is that you're going to rot, and not burn in hellfire for ETERNITY. I happen to think it more comforting that life ends when it ends, it is the end of all joy, true, but it also is the end of all suffering. Life isn't a waste, you just have to make the most of what you have while you're here. Maybe you'd survive after your death but in a different fashion- maybe leave behind a legacy or something to that effect. Anyway, I wish this song was there for me a couple years ago when I started questioning my own faith. I think it would have comforted and eased my transition into atheism, but who knows?

it made me think the first time i heard it, that, i and we, need to treasure what we have..if we don't enjoy what there is now, we'll never be able to enjoy anything. theres so much beauty in the world. a vein of stars..that makes me think of a river of starlight, guiding you. maybe we need to make our own river of stars. our own beaten path to dreamland, because heaven is right here and now.

Seems to be about atheism. There's no god ... "Nothing there to see you down on your knees"

I think this song is more from the perspective of someone who does believe in something out there but who isn't completely convinced. And even if there is nothing, we have now, which he's still ok with. I think it's about god and space and other places in space. I always thought that "nothing there to see you down on your knees" was "nothing there to send you down on your knees" which I guess might be why I see it more about space. Does anyone know what 25, 26, 27 means, or if it means anything?

To me it seems like the vein of stars is referring to constellations, and that its using astrology to talk about superstition in general. Its considering the concept that maybe life isnt predetermined, despite your horoscopic astrological sign, and maybe neither is death. 25, 26, 27 could be just numerology and more superstition, or it could very well be wayne has hidden some treasure somewhere and these are the coordinates. I wouldnt put it past him.

Do you live for death, or do you live for life? Should you be a good person because you are scared what will happen to you when you die, or should you do it for another, maybe less self-centered, reason. Maybe you might not need to worry about it anymore then?

I agree with billyvmc2000, and actually heard this song right at the point that I got a lot of comfort out of it.

While the heaven/hell comments clearly cover organized religion, I think that with a title like "At War with the Mystics" the idea of the "vein of stars" is more directed at the people who have an unspecified belief. The repeated "calling out my name" part I think is really comforting and is meant to say that it isn't really so bad living without that belief. Definitely my personal favorite song on this album.

srry bout that last one, wayne coyne said
"My intention was to sing something stellar about how humans have (as science reveals more and more about the nature of time and space) been abondoned by the stars... but i believe once we finished it (the song and its production) it seems to convey just the opposite... That almost despite science we are connected to the stars... Because we love to look at them, we hope maybe they love to look at us..."

"Nothing there to see you down on your knees" = "No god listening to your prayers.

Meh. I think that if you can accept death as the END, then that can make you a strong and happy person.

I think "25, 26, 26," is just the writer lying on his back counting stars in the night.

Much has been said about this song already, but I thought it would be interesting to point out that Vein of Stars seems to be the counter-point to My Cosmic Autumn Rebellion, which precedes it.

In MCAR, Wayne is struggling with accepting the possiblity that this life is "all there is," that there isn't a grand plan or path for humans to follow, that there isn't some big SOMETHING on the "other side". Hence, his rebellion against the idea and anyone who would "destory us with their lies" by proclaiming it.

However, in VOS, he says, "Who knows? Maybe there isn't...."

I love this guy.

i saw them a couple of weeks ago and right before this song wayne said "we'd like to dedicate this song to all the people who do something to change the world". it changes the whole meaning, i guess they tried to say "stop worrying about what happens next, and start making a difference, start living!"

on their website, on the albums area, there's a complete description of each and every one of their songs.
