Losing all my friends
Losing them to drinking and to driving
Losing all my friends
I want it back
Slipping out the back
Did you really think we wouldn’t notice?
Slipping out the back
In the pouring rain
Yeah
Yeah
But you loved your wife
You were always faithful to her always
Buried both the kids
In the summer sun
Praying for this life
Huddled in the brig all with the shipmates
Praying for this life
And I dropped the bomb
Yeah
Yeah
Yeah
Yeah, yeah
What you waiting for
Searching for his brother
In an empty room across the hall
Is he coming back
Listening at night
Waiting for a son to come up the stairs
Listening at night
Waiting for the sound of the car park
Yeah
Yeah
Yeah
Yeah, yeah
Call him up this summer
On the phone
Need to know what it feels like again
Summer skin
Found another lover
Tell him straight, call him up again
I'll call him up again, yeah
Call him up again
Tying both your shoes and
Looking past the ocean for the signal
Waiting for a body
In a open box
They don't send you letters
They telephone you
They don't send you letters
But you're waiting for them
You write him, yeah
Yeah
Yeah
Yeah
Yeah, yeah
Yeah
Call him up this summer
On the phone
Need to know what it feels like again
I'll call him up again
Call him up this summer
On the phone
Need to know what it feels like again
Losing them to drinking and to driving
Losing all my friends
I want it back

Losing them to drinking and to driving
Losing all my friends
I want it back
(perhaps this is self explanitory)
Slipping out the back
Did you really think we wouldnt notice?
Slipping out the back
In the pouring rain
(I think maybe it was necessary to leave home without parental permission)
Yeah
Yeah
But you loved your wife
You were always faithful to her always
Buried both the kids
In the summer sun
(the parents, maybe, lost more than one child to the military?)
Praying for this life
Huddled in the brig all with the shipmates
Praying for this life
And I dropped the bomb
(I believe this is CENTRAL to this song.... I believe that like in "Untitled 02 (Brother)" his brother joined the military (Navy, most likely) Hence "praying for his life, huddled in the brig all withh shipmates")
Yeah
Yeah
Yeah
Yeah, yeah
What you waiting for
Searching for his brother
In an empty room across the hall
Is he coming back
(obviously he still wants to walk into his brother's room and find him there. nd wonders if he will see him alive again...)
Listening at night
Waiting for a sound to come up the stairs
Listening at night
Waiting for the sound of the car park
(anyone who has ever lost a family member to the service of their country should understand this.... waiting for the serviceman and chaplain to come to the door with a terrible letter.... )
Yeah
Yeah
Yeah
Yeah, yeah
Call him up this summer
On the phone
Need to know what it feels like again
Summer skin
Found another lover
Tell him straight, call him up again
I'll call him up again, yeah
Call him up again
Tying both your shoes and
Looking past the ocean for the signal
Waiting for a body
In a open box
(again, fairly self explanitory)
They don't send you letters
They don't telephone you and they don't send
They don't send you letters
But you're waiting for them
You write him, yeah
Yeah
Yeah
Yeah
Yeah, yeah
Yeah
Call him up this summer
On the phone
Need to know what it feels like again
I'll call him up again
Call him up this summer
On the phone
Need to know what it feels like again
(this song says so much to me, and it's definately one of my favorites.... I know we all hear what we want to hear in the lyrics of songs, but this one and untitled 02 really speak volumes to me, though I have not lost my brother, I can not imagine what it would do to me if ever I did... I don't know Jesse's story, or if he even had a brother in the service, but that's what I hear... thanks)
slipping out the back part is about the man who is falling in love with the soldiers wife sneaking out of a party or something to be with the wife.
did he love his wife? love her and was faithful to her always is asking did the soldier really love his wife and was the soldier actually faithful to her because she is not being faithful to him and is falling in love with another man while he is at war.
buried both the kids in the summer sun is self explanitory saying the soldier/soldiers died at war.
praying for his life, huddled in the brig with all his shipmates praying for his life they dropped the bomb. this shows the soldier is in the navy and their ship is under attack. he is in the brig with his crew as he prays that he will survive and while he is praying the opposing army drops a bomb and kills him.
the waiting for your brother part and the waiting for a sound part shows that maybe the man who stole the soldiers wife is actually the soldiers brother or good friend and is now feeling self concious and guilt about what he did and feels his brother isnt really dead and he is waiting for hime to walk in and find him with his wife.
the next parts about calling him again is saying if he fears his brother is still alive why not call him and tell him the truth about what happened with his wife.
the waiting for a sign and an open box part is referring to the brother wanting a sign that the soldier is actually dead like his body in a casket but his death happened at sea so they cannot find his body.
the letters part is referring to, the brother has got no letters or phone calls proving his brother is actually dead but just MIA and he writes the soldier and he waits for the soldier to write him back everyday to get the guilt off of him.
he loved her and was faithful to her always
buried both their kids, in the summer sun"
they don't telephone in this hotel"
Man i love this song.. and the fact that it's so hard to hear the lyrics drives me crazy.
Both versions are very different, and very good.
I always figured he was just barely muttering "yeah" again at the end.
Also, the last two sound more to me like "in somebody's skin."
And Beatles, the songs changed because they were leaked before they were ready, so the band wanted to be able to release the songs but still have them be something new.
