Lyrics for Son Of A Builder as interpreted by geordie_bri

Son Of A Builder Lyrics
Far from feeling safer
I awake at noon
Read the local paper
On a dirty afternoon
Each day they're closer
And each day I sleep

And i'm just trying to tell myself,
I've got everything I need

The bullies and the liars
Wake me up at night
They keep me in suspense
Why don't they stay well out of sight?
Fully-furnished I am
Yeah, spitting and I can't sleep

And i'm just trying to tell myself,
I've got everything I need
It's the fact that I can't help myself
And it's myself I can't deceive

I get enough protection
Lock it up inside your stalls
You think your best intentions
Then you piss it up the wall
Fully-fledged suburban
Yeah, each day it's set to repeat

And i'm just trying to tell myself,
I've got everything I need
It's the fact that I can't help myself
And it's myself I can't believe
And i'm just trying to tell myself,
I've got everything I need

And I keep trying to mend myself
And remember what is real
It's the fact that I can't help myself
And it's myself I don't believe
And i'm just trying to tell myself,
I've got everything I need

For those who don't know where this song is from, it's a B-side for Snowden, and i'm amazed it wasn't realeased on the Some Cities album.

It sounds to me like it's about a kid who is lying awake at night because he's thinking about the bullying he's getting at school.

I'm not too sure about the first bit of it, but if you look at the 2nd verse, he can't sleep because he's thinking about all the things that the bullies do to him. The 3rd verse, he's doing a typical schoolboy thing, and locking himself away in the toilets. People try to help him, such as teachers, but it just makes the situation worse. And the rest of the song says to me that he's trying to tell himself that it all OK, and that it's not really happening. But he knows that he's lying to himself and that it keeps happening.

Well, thats what it says to me anyways. The song's available as a pay-for download on www.doves.net, and it's definatly worth the quid to pay for it!

A brilliant song, but a bit more whiny than most of Doves' uplifting works. They went into the "poor me" areas with this song. It's still good though.
