He's been trying with limited success
To get this girl to let him get into her pants
But every time he thinks he's getting close
She threatens death before he gets a chance

And that's the way it is in Minnesota
And that's the way it is in Oklahoma
That's the way it's been since protozoa
First climbed onto the shores of California

And she's been trying with limited success
To get him to turn out the lights and dance
Cause like any girl all she really wants
That fickle little bitch romance
That fickle little bitch romance

And that is why a girl is called a tease
And that is why a guy is called a sleaze
And that's why god made escort agencies
One life to live and mace and GHB

And that's the way it is in Minnesota
And that's the way it is in Oklahoma
That's the way since the animals and Noah
First climbed onto the shores of California

Must not be too kind
Stop thinking love is blind
Clench your fists yeah write
"She's just not my type"

Why all these conflicting specifications
Maybe to prevent overpopulation
All I know is that all around the nation
The girls are crying and the boys are masturbating

And that's the way it is in Minnesota
And that's the way it is in Oklahoma
That's the way Aristophanes and homer
Wrote the Iliad and Lysistrata (not in that order)

And that's the way it is in Minnesota
And that's the way it is in Oklahoma
That's the way it's been since protozoa
First climbed onto the shores of California

My Interpretation:I think this is absolutely a satire. They wrore First Orgasm as well, so it's not like she thinks that no woman masturbates. I think the very unusual poppy sond and the videoclip contribute to this satire. In the video you see schoolgirls writing down what Amanda teaches them: she teaches them the stereotypes. Look at Amanda, look what she writes, what she covers, what kind of music she makes. Not your typical woman, right? Whatever a typical woman might be.

General Comment:In some ways I also view this in relation to same-sex relationships.
But the sarcasm factor counted in, along with traditional roles of a relationship.

General Comment:I agree that the song is sarcastic, but I don't agree that it's meant to parody the different values of men and women so much as the different expectations of men and women throughout the ages and the toll that trying to live up to these expectations has taken on them (especially women). Especially lyrics about girls being called a "tease", etc. I think it's more about women having to struggle with the virgin/whore complex- expected to either be completely pure and immune to men's advances or a completely sexual being. Either withholding sex or yielding completely.

This made more sense in my head, I think.

General Comment:Amanda Palmer has all the right in the world to say what she says about sex. Her lyrics are poignants, clever and, yes, sarcastic to a point of farce at times. She writes with passion about a subject she is VERY well informed of. For anybody who isn't aware, she was abused, which is why a lot of her songs see sex as an abusive thing, it is not because she believes "women just dont enjoy it". Please do some research before you judge, as its really offensive, if not to her, at least to her fans.

General Comment:the meaning of this song is probably not as obvious as it seems, i'd say amanda knew what she was writing about.
but do you really have to understand the lyrics and take it completely apart to like the song? I think not.
The lyrics are meant to be tongu-in-cheek and not taken seriously.
on another note, me and my boyfriend are the exact opposite of this
he's the one who wants the romance and "love-making"
I'm the one who is just horny haha

General Comment:To me, it sounded like gay guys/girls trying to get with straight guys/girls, with limited success.
(This was the first time I'd even thought about it any other way...)
If you've ever seen the video, you'll see that Amanda is often hanging around with other girls, in more than just a friendly way...
"The girls are crying and the boys are masturbating" Sounds like her saying that guys don't want girls, they'd rather have themselves...
    that's just a thought...

General Comment:Trytaker, she's trying to make a point through the obvious exaggerations. She's always been a woman who writes "hey, wake the fuck up" lyrics. I don't know if you've heard "Sex Changes" but it's not exactly a "walk in the park" kind of song. She writes so extremely because she is making fun of the "culture" more so than the specific people. And no, I don't think she's trying to imply that all men are sex-starved rapists. I, for one, don't think that when I listen to the song. I think of the differences she's trying to convey through her metaphors.

Although bravo for your knowledge of the Greek stories.

And...this is a rather straightforward song, I think. Highlighting the differences (though not literal) between men and women and what they expect from relationships, as well as how they view sex.

General Comment:Did anyone notie that the video on youtube says that it is a video response to david lee roth's cover of "California Girls"? I don't know if the song was written as a response, but I think it's just Amanda having a little fun & everyone should lighten up.

General Comment:i really agree with annegata. when i listened to the song i got the impression amanda was making a statement on how unattractive both sexes are when they operate in the extreme stereotypes. the listener is not being presented with prime dating candidates, but certainly confused, relateable ones. i feel like, as a woman, i have some of that clingy over-attachness in me that i choose not exercise, just as i'm sure men have that escort ordering side, sex driven side.

but i don't know if that's even the point. i don't really think amanda's saying women aren't interested in sex -- i think she's saying they play games. that they really want to turn off the lights and dance but that something is preventing them, whether it be just that they want to be a "tease" or there own morals (reminds me of the references to midwestern states) or societal bounds.

and when she says, "Why all these conflicting specifications?" it makes me think of all the games both sexes play. or at least that's how i relate to it. the games that prevent anyone from really getting what they want out of any relationship, let alone fucking.

but i think ultimately the point is here:

    Must not be too kind
    Stop thinking love is blind
    Clench your fists, yeah, write:
    "She's just not my type..."

ditch the crappy ones. dream for someone more level headed.

the thing that annoys me about this song though, is the endless rhyming. it seems more intense then her other songs. just kind of childish. it is a good catchy song though. ive had it stuck in my head all day.
