Lyrics for Insomnia as interpreted by shawnzy

Insomnia Lyrics
There’s a light bulb dangling from string
It’s slowly swaying up over my head now
As I jot down the words that’ll never be sung
And wait for my headache to numb
And the wind sounds as if the world’s sighing
And the moon’s just a torn fingernail
As the TV flickers and hums by the wall
And I wait for my eyesight to fade

So, So, So
It’s so damn slow
So, So, So
It’s so damn slow

And the bright-eyed choke on ambition
And the old folks circle their graves
And the young ones are busy destroying their names
And you’re still just wasting away.
I sit and watch the screen for a message
Some kinda sign that says we’re OK
But the screen stays blank till I turn the thing off
And wait for my conscience to break.

So, So, So
It’s so damn slow
So, So, So
It’s so damn slow

I hope you’re learning to listen
And I hope you’re learning to stay
And I hope you find what you’re missing
And I hope that you’re making you’re way
I’m a headcase if I don’t keep moving
And my head hurts if I don’t sit still
It’s an itch that I’ll never stop scratching
It’s a hole that I’ll never quite fill

So

Here's what I get from this song: this guy's sitting staring at his computer screen waiting for an email or instant message from a girl he loves. Seems like they've been having some problems, they've broken up or are about to, or something is going on with her. In the last verse he says he's hoping she's able to work out whatever it is that's going on with her, that she finds what she's missing.

My favorite part of the song are these lines:

"I’m a headcase if I don’t keep moving
And my head hurts if I don’t sit still
It’s an itch that I’ll never stop scratching
It’s a hole that I’ll never quite fill"

My boyfriend just dumped me unexpectedly and totally out of the blue, so I'm sure that's influencing my reading of the song, but I can say this is how I'm feeling now. He's saying that it's crazy not to move on, but that moving on is so hard, and that he's never going to be able to fill the hole in his heart that this girl has left.

this song is obviously about leaving someone behind.
"And the wind sounds as if the world's sighing and the moon's just a torn fingernail" shows how he thinks everything is wrong. he doesnt want to see anymore, see the world and what has happened to a relationship with someone he used to love.
the chorus "so so so it's so damn slow" means to me that he can't get over someone. the feelings slowly fade away. if you have to stop loving someone because they make you stop, losing your feelings happens sometimes way too damn slowly.
"and the bright-eyed choke on ambition."
says that the ones who seem naive are the ones who always want more without seeing the consequences.
"and the old folks circle their graves" means to me that when you get older, you stop living.
but "the young ones are busy destroying their names", which says that the young people on earth just try to be someone else all the time. if you're young, you try to figure out who you want to be and what, therefore you sometimes lose your name in a way. to the singer though, it's nothing positive, because they "destroy" their names. young ones try everything to be "different" and in the end they lose their personality and don't see what really is important in life.
judging young ones and old ones , he comes to say something about the person he loved/loves. "and you're still just wasting away".
the reason why the song says something about people in general and how they fuck up their lives is, that in the end the one who the singer has to leave behind, will be one of them but for now he is still missing that person."i sit and watch the screen for a message...." it shows perfectly how he wants this person to come back and save everything and change what happened. you wait and wait and nothing happens. the feelings are still there and still no word from that person...which explains the chorus again "so damn slow"
the last verse again shows the feelings he still has for that person. he just wishs that the person will be okay without him. "i hope you're learning to listen..." this is not only the wish that things will eventually be fine, but also an advice. the person he leaves never listened, never knew and found what he/she missed.
he suffers not being with that person or simply hearing from that person and how the relationship turned out to be and now he thinks of how life will be for that person. he just hopes it will be fine , yet that wish shows how insecure he is about it.
"And my head hurts if I don't sit still
It's an itch that I'll never stop scratching
It's a hole that I'll never quite fill"
the last words again say that he is not over it. he thinks about everything way too much but nothing changes. "a hole that i'll never quite fill"...the person meant too much to him that now there is a hole and maybe there are questions left but he will never get answers.

i could be wrong, but that's what came to my mind when i listened to it.
seriously one of the best songs i've ever heard.

how can i follow clementine, that was one of the more indepth analisis of a song i have seen, but i agree with you a 100%, it is a song about letting that one person go, even though you dont want to, but you have to and just wanting to know that they are ok and happy with out your presence.
great song!!

i think the song is about two people who are far apart--geographically and mentally--that they can't be together even though they care about each other.

the last verse shows this perfectly: the fact that BOTH of them, not just one, are prevented from making it work.

the first four lines of the last verse deal with the "other" person, the one the singer is singing to. the line "i hope you're learning to stay" shows that the person to whom he is singing is the kind of person who can't stay in one place for very long. perhaps that's why it didn't work out: the person couldn't stand to be in one place for very long.

however, the last four lines of the last verse show that the singer is the same way. "i'm a head case if i don't keep moving/ and my head hurts if i don't sit still...it's a hole that i'll never quite fill." he feels as if he needs to constantly be going new places to feel whole, but no matter where he goes, he'll never feel quite right.

i know exactly how that feels, i've been all over the world and never found one place that i could call my home. i think that's why i relate to the last verse so much. also, there's this guy i dated and we still see each other a few times a year. but he lives on the other side of the world (literally) so we don't even bother. this song really hits me, for those two reasons.

This is a great song. This is a great band. He has a great voice, it must be his Florida accent. It was recorded in a garden shed because its hardcore like that! Ben Cooper and Alex Kane are Godly!

For some reason I didn't see anything about a relationship or love in this... maybe in a general sense in 'it's a part of life' kind of way... but I think this song is sort of like Dylan's 'Forever Young' but reversed. It's sort of listing the things we're doing with our lives every day but shouldn't be doing and then he wishes us luck at the end that we'll be able to turn our lives around. Sort of a general there's pain in our lives but we have to move on sort of thing and not waste our lives kind of thing.

Well, to me, it sounds like the guy was spending the night alone, wasting away, being emo and everything. At some point in our lives, we do the same thing, too. Ya know, just bum around. I like the song---best heard when i'm about to sleep! ;)

Considering the title, it seems to me that this guy just can´t fall asleep. He´s waiting for his eyesight to fade, but it´s so damn slow. That´s how it is, when you have to be away from your true love without explanation or reason...you´re just lying there, thinking of that person, until your conscience break. This song is too painful, this song is my Insomnia...

i think this song has been explained pretty thoroughly.

it reminds me of this time in january a few days after i met my then-boyfriend's good friend, and we ended up talking on the internet all night for like nine hours, eventually admitting we had feelings for each other.

i love this song.

this really is such a great song.
he's lonely, and not knowing what to do after trying to let someone go. and its hard for him, and takes a while, but he just wants to know that the other person is going to be okay, even though he may not fully get over it. "It’s an itch that I’ll never stop scratching
It’s a hole that I’ll never quite fill"

After hearing the lyrics, and then reading everyones reaction to them, I pieced together my own interpretation. I think its not so much about a relationship, but a regret you have. That itch that you'll never stop scratching or that hole that you'll never quite fill. It could very well be a relationship lost, but I think it could also be an opportunity you let slip out of your grasp or a situation you let get out of hand that seems to be tormenting you. It's the thing thats haunting you to the point where you can't get to sleep, hence the name of the song. I think everyone who posted something so far is right because most of you related it to your own life, I just think it could mean more based on a part of my life which I connected to the lyrics.

Gosh, what to say about this song. It intertwines words and emotions into a perfect message. Finally, I hear a song that fits my present mood and struggle. It is such a powerful relief. To me, this song is about coming to terms with the inevitable. Inevitably old souls will return to their grave. The young and ambitious are likely to jump ahead of the game and feel challenged in the midst of those who have experience and wisdom on their side. The speaker of the song realizes he is in denial and simply cannot accept what is inevitably so. He feels a void and a hole and won't allow himself to move past the girl who holds his heart. He harps on his hopes that things will return to bliss once again. Time seems to move at such a slow pace because every is just a little bit longer without her by his side.
This song is heartbreaking but real and powerful. I can't stop listening to it.
