Marble stairs in this cathedral
Built by these hands five hundred years before

We will make good men better
Draw the right hand across the neck
Drop the arm down to your side.
I hear their voices calling in the night.

33 degrees, accepted right of hypocrisy
From this bitter cup, we all shall drink
Here I am awake, it’s 2AM.. and it's getting late
All I know is something isn’t right.

We will make good men better
How can you make good men better?
Draw the right hand across the neck
Drop the arm down to your side.
I hear their shadows calling in the night.

Get up, get out, get out
The fire’s burning now and our bodies burn to ashes
They’ll be scattered to the four winds of heaven

Does it ever even phase you that your father’s involvement with a cult nearly killed your first born child?

I finally got the whole album. :-) I just have one correction for this song. It should be "draw the right hand across the NECK" instead of "night".

This song follows up on a lot of the things in Fast Times at Dropout High, like the house fire when he was a kid and the fact that he found out his parents had another child before him but they gave it up for adoption. From this it sounds like the child may have been put up for adoption becuase of his father-in-laws involvement with the Freemasons, hence the line "Does it ever even phase you that your father's involvement with a cult nearly killed your first born child?"

this song is about kriss father in laws involvement in the freemasons, which many already know, but it is about how they burned kriss house down in indiana while he was there, and nothing happened because they were the freemasons and had connections

Gentle Hour
Yo La Tengo
This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version. Great version of a great song,

Just A Little Lovin'
Dusty Springfield
I don't think it's necessarily about sex. It's about wanting to start the day with some love and affection. Maybe a warm cuddle. I'm not alone in interpreting it that way! For example: "'Just a Little Lovin’ is a timeless country song originally recorded by Eddy Arnold in 1954. The song, written by Eddie Miller and Jimmy Campbell, explores the delicate nuances of love and showcases Arnold’s emotive vocals. It delves into the universal theme of love and how even the smallest gesture of affection can have a profound impact on our lives." https://oldtimemusic.com/the-meaning-behind-the-song-just-a-little-lovin-by-eddy-arnold/

Page
Ed Sheeran
There aren’t many things that’ll hurt more than giving love a chance against your better judgement only to have your heart crushed yet again. Ed Sheeran tells such a story on “Page.” On this track, he is devastated to have lost his lover and even more saddened by the feeling that he may never move on from this.

Plastic Bag
Ed Sheeran
“Plastic Bag” is a song about searching for an escape from personal problems and hoping to find it in the lively atmosphere of a Saturday night party. Ed Sheeran tells the story of his friend and the myriad of troubles he is going through. Unable to find any solutions, this friend seeks a last resort in a party and the vanity that comes with it. “I overthink and have trouble sleepin’ / All purpose gone and don’t have a reason / And there’s no doctor to stop this bleedin’ / So I left home and jumped in the deep end,” Ed Sheeran sings in verse one. He continues by adding that this person is feeling the weight of having disappointed his father and doesn’t have any friends to rely on in this difficult moment. In the second verse, Ed sings about the role of grief in his friend’s plight and his dwindling faith in prayer. “Saturday night is givin’ me a reason to rely on the strobe lights / The lifeline of a promise in a shot glass, and I’ll take that / If you’re givin’ out love from a plastic bag,” Ed sings on the chorus, as his friend turns to new vices in hopes of feeling better.
