He likes Vampires and hitless radio
Turns it off when he hears this one song he knows
And you breathe, the window's down
You're driving awkward as you make your way back home

You ride in silence because he will not let go
And you breathe, the window's down
It's a new place that you have found

I've been up late writing books
All about heroes and crooks
One of them saves you from this
The other one steals you and then
Sure things fall
And all sure things fall

Do you remember how we used to get so high?
It didn't work at first, we tried it two more times
And we could breathe, the window's down
I was thinking of the temperature outside

Cool like the water that was running through our eyes
And you breathe, the window's down
It's a new place that we have found

I've been up late writing books
All about heroes and crooks
One of them saves you from this
The other one steals you and then
Sure things fall
And all sure things fall

He could take you all the way to Church this time,
But don't forget you summed it up in 15 lies

I've been up late writing books
All about heroes and crooks
One of them saves you from this
The other one steals you

Of all of the places I looked
And all of the pictures I took
One of them's here with me now
I'm finally finding out how

Sure things fall
All sure things fall

The 15th line is about smoking weed. Supposedly, you don't really get high the first two times you smoke, the third time is when you start getting the 'high' sensation.

My Interpretation:A little late with my interpretation, but I just wanted to add this.

I think the ending is the key to the song. The whole song is, like the title suggests, having a sure thing fall apart. The "I've been up late writing books" I think refers to just life as a book, and with each day you write a new chapter. The heroes and crooks refer to the types of events that either help or hurt the realization of your dreams.

"All of the places I looked...pictures I took" refers to all the dreams you've had. Everything you plan for your life, the stages are the "pictures" and the one that is "here with me now" refers to looking in the mirror, the picture of who you are today. It's when you look in the mirror that you realize that you are who you are, and all of those dreams and expectations you had, all of those "sure things", may not have been as sure as you once thought.

The other parts of the song I think, like others have said, tell his story of a girl that is with someone else, and he is writing how her decision will add a chapter to his own book. If she leaves the guy for him, he'll write a chapter about a hero, but if she stays with the other guy, he'll write about the crook who took away his "sure thing," one more picture thrown away.

General Comment: I think the song about a girl who is in bad relationship and doesn't know it but the guys is saying that he is better for. He is the hero and he is the bad guy.

General Comment:whatever these things all mean, all you have to do is read the title.

it signifies the things in life we think are permenant but then they come crashing down.

we cant take things for granted because the next day they could be gone.

in his case, the girl would be the "sure thing"

hmm, that is all i have to say.

General Comment:Dang, I never thought about any of this when listening to the song. But I agree with what yall are saying, a relationship the girl doesn't want to be in or he thinks she doesn't want to be in and he either saves her from him, or steals her from him.

General Comment:I agree with the song being about a relationship and "all the way to church this time" if meaning she could Marry the guy. also the 'this time' means she's been in relationships like this before...not important.

    the 'breathe, the windows down' part is with windows as boundaries, saying u can breathe is like saying you can be free... i think it means you can still be yourself and be inside boundaries {of society?}

General Comment:obviously none of you read poetry because the "15 lines" is obviously a reference to a sonnet which has 15 lines. She wrote him a poem summing up her feelings in those 15 lines, which when you think about it is pretty short.
