Honey, loving you is the greatest thing
I get to be myself and I get to sing
I get to play at being irresponsible
I come home late at night and I love your soul
I never forget you in my prayers
I never have a bad thing to report

You're my picture on the wall
You're my vision in the hall
You're the one I'm talking to
When I get in from my work
You are my girl, and you don't even know it
I am living out the life of a poet
I am the jester in the ancient court
You're the funny little frog in my throat

My eye sight's fading, my hearing's dim
I can't get insured for the state I'm in
I'm a danger to myself I've been starting fights
At the party at the club on a Saturday night
But I don't get disapproving from my girl
She gets the all highlights wrapped in pearls

You're my picture on the wall
You're my vision in the hall
You're the one I'm talking to
When I get in from my work
You are my girl, and you don't even know it
I am living out the life of a poet
I am the jester in the ancient court
You're the funny little frog in my throat

I had a conversation with you at night
It's a little one sided but that's all right
I tell you in the kitchen about my day
You sit on the bed in the dark, changing places
With the ghost that was there before you came
You've come to save my life again

I don't dare to touch your hand
I don't dare to think of you
In a physical way
And I don't know how you smell
You are the cover of my magazine
You're my fashion tip, a living museum
I'd pay to visit you on rainy Sundays
I'll maybe tell you all about it someday

General Comment:really the state he describes himself to be in, is an unlovable one.
When you feel unlovable, what you would really like is for someone to love you. sometimes you imagine somebody to do that job. and then you get carried away (gifting her imaginary pearls). Sometimes (like me) you imagine someone out of thin air to satisfy sexual fantasies... but this one is more of a spiritual support. No disapproval..
but of course he realizes the conversations are "a little one-sided" and so there are real partners he commits to sometimes, but they're less real eventually than his imagined lover.. they fade and all he's left with is his pathetic imaginary friend. But the song is from his perspective, while he's still being half-delusional and in love, so it's positive. but of course it's supposed to be ironically pathetic.

My Interpretation:To me this song is about Morrissey. I think of the term "girl" as in "You are my girl" in an affectionate, general, term of endearment type way. i think its probably just about adoring anyone who is famous. the relationship often times semms to be one sided and thats exactlly what outsiders and people who dont understand try to convince you; but people like Stuart and Morrissey both understand that its not. It takes two at least to fawn apon the bedroom floor at a cover of a magazine. Then these people get into your soul and change the way you speak/think/live. Then if your lucky enough you get to return the favor for someone else. Great Song!

General Comment:I feel like this is obvious... Suppose not.
I think he's in love with this one girl who has no idea who he is- but he's becoming obsessed with her. He can't talk to her at all in real life, but at home, he constantly imagines her there and fantasizes about her all the time.
    I think it's kinda cute (:

General Comment:I'm going to lay it out very clearly.

the funny little frog in his throat: When you are nervous about speaking (to a girl in this instance), you often need to clear your throat you know, or like your words get all messed up in your nervousness, you have a frog in your throat and you sound ridiculous, he is afraid to talk to 'her'

who is 'she'? for this song it doesn't matter.

Anyway, this is a simple and fun song about the pros and cons of actual relationships. In other words, an imaginary and idealistic mental reproduction of an actual person he admires provides him with none of the annoyances and frustration of actual relationships.

So the imaginary girls are all different imo, a fashion model, his imagining a relationship with a girl he knows but is too afraid to ask out, a picture on his wall, etc. He pays to visit her on rainy sundays (at the theater perhaps?).

And its ended on the note that he may tell her all about it someday, lol. If he ever gets the courage to ask her out formally instead of simply fantasizing about her.

Oh, and the highlights wrapped in pearls line, in my opinion, is most likely a reference to masturbation. AND, if you think Stuart is above these sort of references, I would suggest you take a closer listen at some of the earlier songs. He can actually be rather perverted. Also, references to lesbian activity is a very common motif in b&s songs. haha.

General Comment:I think it's about a maladjusted misfit who is in love with his friend, but is too awkward to tell her and doesn't want to physically love her, but is preoccupied with the idea of loving her. Kind of like she's his muse.

General Comment:i like the virgin mary idea. she's his perfect lover, and not because of anything physical; he can talk to her and she will listen. she is simply someone he admires, and he's explaining that maybe this is the sort of woman he is looking for. he wants a friend more than a lover, someone to be safe with.

General Comment:I think that this is about a pedophile."My eye sights fading, my hearings dim I cant get insured for the state Im in" suggests that he is an older man. "I dont dare to touch your hand, I dont dare to think of you ,In a physical way ,And I dont know how you smell" It gives the impression that this is a younger girl, that it would be inappropriate for him to have a relationship with her, he is trying not to think these things, i'll pay to visit you on rainy sunday's, i'll maybe tell you all about it someday" sounds like he a funny uncle figure innts girls life, and is waiting for her to grow up, he'll tell her all about it someday, she doesnt know that she is his girl, and she is the funny little frog in his throat, it sounds like a childish image. He has one-sided conversations with her, perhaps because she is too young to understand him. I am living out the life of a poet brings a feel of perhaps desperation, poets are hardly ever happy people, they often speak of thier grievances...so yeahp.

General Comment:I was at a Belle and Sebastian concert a few years ago and Stuart Murdoch said: "This is a song about being in love with someone you don't know. You just see the person." before singing Funny Little Frog.

So it's clearly not about him being a musician or anything else.
