Gravity is working against me
And gravity wants to bring me down
Oh, I'll never known what makes this man
With all the love that his heart can stand
Dream of ways to throw it all away

Whoa, gravity is working against me
And gravity wants to bring me down
Oh, twice as much ain't twice as good
And can't sustain like one half could
It's wanting more that's gonna send me to my knees

Oh twice as much ain't twice as good
And can't sustain like one half could
It's wanting more that's gonna send me to my knees

Whoa, gravity, stay the hell away from me
Whoa, gravity has taken better men than me
Now how can that be?
Just keep me where the light is
Just keep me where the light is
Just keep me where the light is
Come on keep me where the light is
Come on keep me where, keep me where the light is.

General Comment:I went to a John Mayer concert in 2009 and he said this song was about going home. It's depth resonates with the idea of trying to escape your hometown, but it has a certain draw that always has you coming back, hence "gravity." it's not about love.

General Comment:One of my all time favorite songs and mainly because what he seems to imply with "gravity" and "light." Considering that gravity is the weakest force unless at the event horizon or something, it still requires energy to escape and this is a beautiful metaphor for the problems each one of us faces in life; it takes a great effort to escape our troubles and some seem so immense there is no hope to ever return when inevitably such things are unavoidable.

The best part (to me) is "keep me where the light is." When considering the forces of nature, what is light and how can it be beneficial in such circumstances other than symbolically "shining light." It nearly implies that electromagnetism is a repulsive factor and interacts with gravity in that nature which is wrong, but none-the-less thought provoking...wouldn't mind hearing other thoughts.

General Comment:First off, this song is so good and the guitar playing is incredible.

I think this song is about not going to hell and the gravity being the devil. He talks about taking advantage of his life and how he is a lucky man but that he "dreams of ways to throw it all away".

"Keep me where the light is" means that he wants to stay where the sun is and above the ground and not hell.

    Think about it.

My Interpretation:To me, this song is about falling back in love with an ex, and you know you shouldn't fall in love with her, and you don't want to, but you can't help it. When he says "Gravity is working against me", he's trying not to fall in love, but he is. When he says "I'll never know what makes this man with all the love that his heart can stand", he's sort of mad at himself for falling back in love with this ex, because he doesn't know why. When he says "Twice as much ain't twice as good, and can't sustain like one half could", he's sort of lying to himself to try to convince himself not to fall in love with her again. At the end, he says "Gravity, stay the hell away from me", hes desperately trying not to fall in love again. He also says "Gravity has taken better men than me, how can that be?" he's realizing that if men better than him couldn't stop falling in love, that he wont be able to do it either. So after, he says "Just keep me where the light is, c'mon keep me where the light is", he's kind of praying and begging that he won't fall in love with her again.

General Comment:To me this song means he loves another woman. He is in a relationship with someone but the "gravity" keeps pulling him back to that other woman

My Interpretation:This song gives a persona of one who has settled down or is attempting to settle down in a relationship but is being tempted by outside influences. "Gravity" being temptation, Wanting More: More than he already has will keep him from reaching the potential that his relationship can. "Send Me to my Knees" His Weakness. In the beginning of the song he is subtly saying that his conscious is heavy from even having thoughts of "Gravity". "All the love his heart can stand , Dream of ways to throw it all away" He's saying that he has his love but if he doesn't resist this "Gravity" he'll throw it all away. Toward the end of the song (third verse) he realizes that he is stronger than what "Gravity" has made him out to be. He says "stay the hell away from " meaning he is no longer as weak as he was in the beginning it implies that growth has occured. He says "Gravity has taken better man than me, how can that be" he realizes that this isn't just an issue that he is facing alone. He realizes that even "Great Men" have been tempted and have fallen. He then recognizes his strength and says "Keep me Where the Light is" light symbolizing, good, right, righteousness, he is putting resistance into practice..... What a Beautiful song...

General Comment:This is Mayer steering himself away from the black-lung disease of all bluesmen/women: temptation. The only relationship in this song is between Mayer and his demons. "Twice as much" and "wanting more" will end bad and he knows it. The key is to a sustainable (i.e., not tragic) life lies in moderation ("one half"). He intones "keep me where the light is" as his personal mantra to stay away from the dark forces. Such as Anniston, I suppose.
