Lyrics for Gravity as interpreted by giang

Gravity Lyrics
Gravity is working against me
And gravity wants to bring me down
Oh, I'll never know what makes this man
With all the love that his heart can stand
Dream of ways to throw it all away

Gravity is working against me
And gravity wants to bring me down
Oh, twice as much ain't twice as good
And can't sustain like one half could
It's wanting more that's gonna send me to my knees

Twice as much ain't twice as good
And can't sustain like one half could
It's wanting more that's gonna send me to my knees

Gravity, stay the hell away from me
And gravity has taken better men than me
Now how can that be

Just keep me where the light is
Just keep me where the light is
Just keep me where the light is
Just keep me where the light is

This song seems very much the same as daughters- falling in love with the wrong person. Its great how he puts it, “gravity." Does this = attraction, chemistry, passion?
I don't know but I can relate, chemistry does not always = compatibility.
I always thought that the line "and can't sustain like one half could" was "can't sustain like the one have could," either way its poetry, thanks for putting it so well John.

I think John is talking about a relationship that has lost its freshness. At first you float through the clouds and everything is new, then the reality of relationships set it and the magic carpet ride is over!

Relationships? I think it's safe to say this song isn't about love. I believe the song is basically about doing things that you know you shouldn't but you feel pulled into it. I love the part "twice as much ain't twice as good and can't sustain like one half could" (i'm gonna change the line in the lyrics because what's up there is not right) cause it means that more of anything doesn't necessarily mean it's better.

Ok, I totally thought this song was about gravity in a relationship. What goes up must come down? It sounded like cheating to me, \"twice as much ain\'t twice as good, and can\'t sustain like 1/2 could\", two being two women, and not making him as happy as one could. Especially when he says \"gravity has taken better men than me\". To me it sounds like he is falling into infidelity even though he doesn\'t want to, hence the \"gravity, stay the hell away from me\", don\'t get me wrong, I don\'t want John to be a cheater, it\'s just what I got from the song! Could be wrong though! :)

I actually disagree with everyone. I think this song is about suicide. Especially with lyrics like, "Oh, I've never known what makes this man
With all the love that this heart can stand
Dream of ways to throw it all away" and "
And Gravity, has taken better man than me
Now how can that be" Some of John's personal idols have fallen victim to suicide, Hendrix, Cobain... and he wonders why such great legends "threw it all away"

He says "Just keep me where the light is" like the light is where its safe and he's sane and knows that his life is worth living.

I think it isn't about one certain situation in particular... Mostly about REALITY being like gravity. We all want to live in our own dream world and maybe our fantasies skew our perception of the real world. Then Reality comes to bring us out of the world we want and into the world that really exists, which is never as pleasant as the one we envision.
"Its wanting more that's gonna set me to my knees" Higher expectations only disappoint him more. Getting your hopes up only causes more disappointment in the end.

During JM's previewing of Continuum, he states the following about Gravity:
"...in a song like Gravity, you know, some people can't catch a break, and I can't seem to catch a struggle. I think it's a worse position for a guy that can't catch a struggle, because you know when that struggle comes, its gonna be all the struggles all at once. And Gravity is about being smart enough to stave it off."

Being that he plays a blues based guitar in this song, I think it's pretty clever to write a song about staying away from the blues while playing the blues.

I'm don't listen to John Mayer much, but I heard this song on the House episode 'Cane and Able', and it fit the character 100%.... and being obsessed with the show, became obsessed with this song.

I think it's about cheating. I quoted this song to a cheating relative of mine. "I'll never know what makes this man with all the love his heart can stand dream of ways to throw it all away?" "Twice as much aint twice as good and can't sustain what one half could"

Gravity=Temptation. Temptation is something that pulls you toward it like gravity. the only way to not let temptation reel you in ("bring me down") is to avoid it or stay away from it period.

In this case temptation (gravity) is working against him because it could mess up what he already has. However we cannot escape gravity and he cannot escape this temptation. He pleads in vain knowing that although its working against him, he's still gravitating toward it.

" Just Keep me where the light is"--keep him close to what he already has, don't let him wander away toward temptation--However its like asking that we float about in the air as we walk when its inevitable we be pulled to the ground by gravity, a force we cannot escape...

this song kinda does sound like suicide. or possibly about all the heavy weights thats being throw on him. as much as he would like to 'throw it all away' the gravity is just too strong....

This gorgeous song is about growing up and older...John has written songs about aging and the fear of. This line "keep me where the light is" refers to him not growing old and eventually dying. He is not ready yet.

This song obviously has the ability to be interpreted in many different ways, particularly depending on the mood that you are in. When I heard this song for the first time I was feeling pretty down about things and instantly identified with song as being about depression.
