When I hear this song I feel like I want to insert a bullet into my head, or maybe the head of the producer who let it on the album. I almost screamed at the sterio, "Dude, shut the fuck up!"
Great album though!

(b:D)b At Eelsrule, some of the songs on the album really do that to you...you hatign them, then ending up loving them afterwards, I mean.

As for teh song, the first verse just seems to be him paranoid from sleep depravation. I don't know what the second verse might mean, but it might just be him being easily ticked off ("everyone was loud"). Or, the other person is impressed with some positive quality of somebody, and the main character comments that if you were less of an asshole you wouldn't be so surprised. I dunno.

The "You're no fun" part, shen I first read that those lyrics were in the song, instantly made me think that the main character is angry at the people who are asleep, and who are not afraid of it, and since he's awake all night he's bored out of his mind. So he writes them off as boring sicne they go to sleep, with a "You're no fun". Maybe, I dunno...maybe it has something more to do with that second verse too.

Yeah, some of the songs you gotta let grow on you. this is one of them. still dont love this song but the chorus is pretty cool (youre no fun, youre no fun..)

this is probably wrong, but maybe the song's about someone who's always on his guard(fear of sleep) becuz he's afraid he'll be exploited (you chopped down my tree to get my fur).

we all have secrets and this makes our lives special. we ought to share ourselves but if someone gets too close to our truths, we hide, or we act like assholes to fear them. no fun.

This always reminds me of Johnny the Homicidal Maniac. The symbol on the compillation book is ?Z which means Question Sleep.

They probably aren't related at all, but that's what I think about.

i feel that this song means like the Quote Julian puts, "Fear of the unknown, change, and dead"
I guess the first part about the squirrel is just saying how it has to hide from humans to survive and whatnot and the second part everyone is just "fucking around" having a good time before you die.
Fear of sleep is just in my opinion afraid of dying in your sleep.

this song is on the new gael garcia bernal movie called the science of sleep. haha i have no idea why i wrote that but just if you wanted to know. i also didn't like it at first but now it's one of my favorites off of the new album.

liked it from the beginning because of the hilarious & cute 'squirrel....fur' line. i love when musicians get a little wacky. who needs to be serious all the time? that ain't no fun & he says it in this song. the entire second verse is fucking brilliant & i wanna say those likes to a few people i work with......besides wickedly fun words, the bass & guitar make this song great. how can any of you not dig the bass & guitar?

i think a few people pretty much caught the message they were tryin to convey, but since the song is very experimental like someone said, there are many ways you can go with it. and i feel thats the way they wanted it. as long as food for thought is being brought to the table, then they have accomplished something.

if you notice, they are getting very abstract lately, it seems as if they have finally grown up, they have successfully continued to achieve progress. what you hear is basically the natural evolution, nah forget evolution, its the natural adaptation to the world that everyone must deal with, especially artists who are born with talent but are afraid of using it to their full potential.

i feel like the strokes as a collective see the world falling asleep while the exploitation of human nature and nature in general continues (see: ize of the world) and the artist therefore manifests this literal fear of sleep as to not be part of the horrible shit goin on. and if you get to this point in life where your mind begins racing back n forth, you will know how difficult it becomes to sleep.

and to add to that, maybe the song is also about death and the fear of its inevitability. but after death is the unknown and its hard to deal with these thoughts in the mind of someone constantly seeking truths, facts, always questioning. so the character in the song becomes this solitary creature that hides from the rest of world and the person who chops the tree down, probably a member of the opposite sex, attempts to get to know this squirrel. but in a reality where opening up to someone and letting your guard down presents many risks (ie the quote: "get youself a lawyer and a gun"- we can handle the situation civilized or uncivilized) its almost like asking for the impossible.

so then in the second verse the protagonist ackowledges the fact that people like himself become bitter assholes and they feel like they are the only ones who have "waken up", thereby not allowing themselves to contribute to the task of helping human beings progessively move into the future. so he says it helps not being an asshole cuz it lets you recognize those who might share the same view as you, rather than being full of yourself and getting mad that someone else can shine.

i think its about how the media hound famous people and wont stop and go to extreme lengths to just get that one good pic.

to me that means that they have their sneaky ways of finding out where you are etc.

even if your hiding from the media they do anything to get info on you. "you chopped down my tree to get my fur" means they 'trashed' everything in your path just to get the dirt (or fur)

i think that means that you become scared to go out in public but if you don't "you're no fun"

i can't really be bothered right now to translate the other verse

This is one of my favorite songs on this album.
I love the intensity of his voice after he mumbles the squirell shit and goes "FEAAAR OF SLEEP! FEAR OF SLEEP!"
