It's just like the movies, I eat from the trees
If I do not open the curtains then I cannot see
All the people run by

My heart eats beats...
My heart eats love...

You are mistaken 'cause I do not bite
Over the Williamsburg bridge on a bike
And if he loves me then why does he leave?

My heart eats beats...
My heart eats love...

Don't say goodbye like you're burying him
'Cause the world is round and he might return

But if he loves me then why does he leave?

General Comment:I'm keeping it simple. She's had a fairytale romance, and now he's leaving her. He says he loves her, and he does, so she doesn't understand his motivation for leaving her. The bits about her heart eating beats, and people running by are just the thoughts that swim around her head when she tries to stop thinking about him, when she tries to be normal, when she tries to handle what's just happened.

General Comment:I see this song differently than most
Or more like I FEEL this song differently.

The way the piano opens up the song, the delicate wording in the beginning reminds me/makes me feel like those moments when time stops. Not really, of course, but in your head. When you enter into this sense of solitude where its just you and your thoughts- reflecting. Life seems to move on around you but you feel like you have stopped (does that make sense at all?)

I imagine there is this girl who has just said goodbye to a man. And she is reflecting on that moment, this man, the feelings, and all the endless questions that inevitably occur in a romance.

It's just like the movies, I eat from the trees
[[I think this eating thing is a metaphor for being consumed by/consuming love- just like the movies]]
If I do not open the curtains then I cannot see
[[if you don’t ask questions, and pull back the BLINDs (blindly in love) you can never truly see what’s occurring]]
    All the people run by

    My heart eats beats...
[[I imagine her heart feels in tune to the beats of these passing people’s feet- hence the “ts-ts-ts-ts” in beat]]
    My heart eats love...
[[just like she ate from the tree earlier- metaphor for love]]

You are mistaken 'cause I do not bite
[[shes is withdrawn from her surroundings right now, seemingly bitter, but she isn’t]]
Over the Williamsburg bridge on a bike
    [[she’s riding a bike]]
And if he loves me then why does he leave?
[[this is the epic question she is asking herself. Can it truly be love if he would leave her?]]

    My heart eats beats...
    My heart eats love...

Don't say goodbye like you're burying him
'Cause the world is round and he might return
[[Deciding to not write him off as another lover lost just yet]]

But if he loves me then why does he leave?
[[the epic question that lead to this solitude]]

General Comment:My first thought when I heard this song was, woah, this sounds like it belongs in a movie. Then I checked the title and said, Ooooohhhh, cool. I'm surprised no one else has commented on this theme - it sounds to me like she added another dimension by writing a song that sounds like a dramatic movie theme.

General Comment:I'n my opinion, this song is about the first time being in love, and you being just so young and naive. Probably thinking you'll stay together forever, but then he walks away and leaves you behind, broken.

I'm totally in love with the last two sentences:
'Don't say goodbye like you're burying him
Cause the world is round and he might return'

General Comment:When she sings, "My heart eats love, ts ts, love, ts ts, love, ts ts lo oaooao oa oa ove"
    she sounds like she's dying.
Like the man leaving is killing her.
She has to tell herself the world is round and he might return in order to keep going.

General Comment:"if i do not open the curtain then i can not see all the people run by" is maybe talking about denial that the rest of the world is going on without her. "my heart eats love" is perhaps expressing the fact that she took the relationship for granted and his love as well. i think it's all a running inner monologue of sorts. however, i think the real focus of this song should be placed on the piano and not so much the words. the words have weight, but the piano really backs it and supports it. you can't really analyze the lyrics without the music.

General Comment:When I heard the song, I interpreted her as saying, "My heart eats BEETS". I can sort of see her saying this because beets are red, and blood is red (and beets will actually turn your urine red if you eat too many...) All in all, it could be a loose association with the amount of love she has in her heart for the object of her affection being portrayed in the redness of the blood that flows through her heart.....but wait, I could be taking this too far......P.S. I heart Regina!
