So at my show on Monday
I was told that someday
You'd be on your way to better things
It's not about your make-up
Or how you try to shape up
To these tiresome paper dreams
Paper dreams honey
So now you pour your heart out
You're telling me you're far out
You're all about to lie down for your cause
But you don't pull my strings
Cause I'm a better man
Moving on to better things
But uh oh, I love her because
She moves in her own way
But uh oh, she came to my show
Just to hear about my day
And at the show on Tuesday
She was in her mindset
Tempered firs and spangled boots
Looks are deceiving
Making me believe it
And these tiresome paper dreams
Paper dreams honey, yeah
So won't you go far
Tell me you're a keeper
You're all about to lie down for your cause
But you don't pull my strings because
'Cause I'm a better man
Moving on to better things
But uh oh, I love her because
She moves in her own way
But uh oh, she came to my show
Just to hear about my day
Yes our wish's that we never made it
Through all the summers
We kept them up instead of
Kicking us back down to the suburbs
Yes our wish's that we never made it
Through all the summers
We kept them up instead of
Kicking us back down to the suburbs
But uh oh, I love her because
She moves in her own way
But uh oh, she came to my show
Just to hear about my day
But uh oh, I love her because
She moves in her own way
But uh oh, she came to my show
Just to hear about my day

So at my show on Monday
I was told that someday
You'd be on your way to better things
It's not about your make-up
Or how you try to shape up
To these tiresome paper dreams
Paper dreams honey
This is about him hoping that these girls would move on to reality instead of smothering themselves with makeup and trying to look good for the band, going after their money: "Paper dreams"
So now you pour your heart out
You're telling me you're far out
You're all about to lie down for your cause
But you don't pull my strings
Cause I'm a better man
Moving on to better things
In this verse, these girls are trying to tell him everything he wants to hear, and "lie down for your cause" basically means they will bang him just because he's rich and in a band. In the last three lines, he says he doesn't fall for that and is all about real women, as the chorus talks about:
But uh oh, I love her because
She moves in her own way
But uh oh, she came to my show
Just to hear about my day
Real women that he is interested in, not these money hungry groupies, are independent and do their own thing, "moves in her own way". Also, the girl he really wants comes to see him play because she truly cares about him, "just to hear about my day".
And at the show on Tuesday
She was in her mindset
Tempered firs and spangled boots
Looks are deceiving
Making me believe it
And these tiresome paper dreams
Paper dreams honey, yeah
Again more about the groupies he sees everywhere.. all dressed up in the mindset to chase the band with their fake looks, that he's almost going to fall for it as these looks are deceiving.
So won't you go far
Tell me you're a keeper
You're all about to lie down for your cause
But you don't pull my strings because
Cause I'm a better man
Moving on to better things
Again, the women are telling him things, claiming they are "keepers" and about to "lie down for your cause".. again he's not interested in them anymore and moving on to the girl he really wants (in chorus).
Yes our wish's that we never made it
Through all the summers
We kept them up instead of
Kicking us back down to the suburbs
Yes our wish's that we never made it
Through all the summers
We kept them up instead of
Kicking us back down to the suburbs
Here, he's almost regretting his past of succumbing to the groupies and fake women out there, "all the summers". Him and the band kept on supporting these girls, instead of settling down with a real girl, "we kept them up instead of kicking us back down to the suburbs".
This song is very nice and the groupie/gold digger woman can be applied to others in life. Sadly there are tons of women like that (especially in New York) and the challenge for a real man is to find that girl that "moves in her own way". It applies to me and certainly is one of my favorite songs ever.
Through all the summers
We kept them up instead of
Kicking us back down to the suburbs
What does that mean?
It was as if he imagined himself singing the song in front of the girl whom he made this song for
Because I'm a better man
Moving on to better things
In this "love" song...what exactly is this implying?
I like this song because to me. Its the same girl.
My girlfriend was wrapped up in being the perfect one that it was a turnoff. The reason I liked her was because "she moved in her own way" and with her trying to be that perfect girlfriend it was just straining the relationship.
She got over that though and realized what was happening as she tried to be better and started being herself again. I love her so much!
'So now you pour your heart out
You're telling me you're far out'
i think this part means that she has 'poured her heat out' by telling him how much she loves and adores him and now he is wishing that the relationship never went far, by wishing they never made it because she doesnt 'pull his strings'.
i would take it as an insult if a boy was to refer this song to me!
