Lyrics for Perfect as interpreted by QBlue_12

Perfect Lyrics
Sick of circling the same road
Sick of bearing the guilt
So open the windows to cool off
And heat pours in instead

Perfect in weakness
I'm only perfect in just your strength alone

All my efforts to clean me
Leave me putrid and filthy
And how can you look at me
When I can't stand myself

I'm tired to be honest
I'm nobody

Perfect in weakness
I'm only perfect in just your strength alone

Perfect in weakness
I'm only running in just your strength alone

I tried to kill you
You tried to save me

You save me
You save me
You save me
You save me

Perfect in weakness
I'm only perfect in just your strength alone

Perfect in weakness
I'm only running in just your strength alone

I think this song is about a girl who doesn't like herself, and the boy who loves her. She doesn't see how he can love her and pretends to reject his love, but actually wants it.

This song is about God... like most of Flyleaf's songs. She's saying that through her own strength she's nothing, but through God she is perfect.
"All my efforts to clean me
Leave me putrid and filthy
And how can you look at me
When I can't stand myself"
In our own power we cant clean ourselves and make ourselves pure. We only destroy ourselves even more. It's amazing how in our sin and filth and God in his infiniute purity can still stand the sight of us.
"I tried to kill you
You tried to save me"
The cross. Our sin murdered him, but his love saved us.

"How can you look at me when I can't stand myself?" That's the best line! It's one of the wonderful graces of God. He loves you always, even when you don't. And through his love you can learn to look yourself in the mirror again.
This song is so intense.
"All *my* efforts to clean me leave me putrid and filthy." We talked about this at my church. Another name for Him is Jehovah Tsidkenu which is "The Lord my Righteousness." Only God can make you clean and right and pure. There's nothing we can do to make ourselves better other than praying for an increased closeness with God and for his blessing.

I think this is about a girl who has an eating disorder, and wishes she was perfect but can no longer stand what its doing to her. This would be especially relevant of she had bulimia:
"All my efforts to clean me
Leave me putrid and filthy"
See?
Then of course she is talking to her boyfriend when she says
"And how can you look at me
When I can't stand myself"
As she has no self esteem.
Lastly, I think that the "Perfect in weakness" means that yes she may be skinny and beautiful looking to everyone else, but it has only been attained by her weakness - an ED.
Thats all I have to say

It could be an eating disorder, but I think its more broad then that, its about being helped basically though. By someone who loves you and won't let go of you, especially when she says:
"I tried to kill you
You tried to save me"
Its about not giving up on people you believe in and those who support you, because they clearly do the same for you.

I have to say, im an atheist.
I dont belive in all the stuff about god. Now im not saying that there is anything wrong with flyleaf. I'm also a liberal. So it doesnt bother me. i listen to the music cause its good. I just wanted to say that and let other peopl know. Even if you dont believe in a god its still okay to listen to the music. Your not a hypocrite.

Yeah, this song is definitely talking about God. "I tried to kill you, you tried to save me" means that all the bad she did had no effect on God's willingness to save her. The title itself has the meaning, which is that God is perfect.

I think it's absurd how many of you are suggesting that this song "just HAS" to be about your god. You should leave some space for others to find their own meaning in songs and take what they need from them as an individual before applying your relentless certainty in the matter. I think your remarks would be superb had the words, "I think..." or, "to me this song..." been placed before your opinions; but as they weren't... I think you should rethink what you say about the author's intentions. After all, what right have you to speak for her, as well as her band mates at all?

It's not at all absurd to think that this song is about God. The term "perfect in weakness" is straight out of 2 Corinthians 12. Look it up. It's basically saying that it is only when when we give up our own strength and rely on God's strength that we are truly strong.

I think Brooke8210, azmoongirl, and iceangelred86 are all correct, because this song is completely about God.

yeah, it has a positive message at the end with God and everything (like most of their songs.) I think it has to do with addiction too

In my opinion, I think this song is definatly about God and that we are strognest through God's strength, we don't truely, completely live without it. and I love;
"I tried to kill you
You tried to save me"
b/c I can totally relate, I have tried to push the truth away before, but in the end I realized even when you do try to push God away, He'll always love you and be waiting for you to notice Him.

And as a side note to Flawless Regression, true people can't speak for the band, but we can base your thoughts of the lyrics off of other songs that are even more obviously about God, and what Flyleaf has said during interviews if you know any info behind the band.

great if you can take take the lyrics of this song and make it apply to yourself...but flyleaf wrote it for a reason, not about a guy and a girl, but about God and His people...the lyric

"I tried to kill you
You tried to save me"

would actually be really creepy if it was about anything else...i hope you can't pull any different meaning out of that

From the band's own website:

1.4 Is Flyleaf a Christian band?
The best answer we've gotten to date is:

Lacey: "WE ALL SHARE THE SAME FAITH. And so when we deal with the whole 'Christian band thing', we kind of think about something POD says, like, 'If you're a Christian, it affects everything in your life. So if you're a plumber, does that make you a Christian plumber?' I don't know the answer. We're a band, it's part of who we are, SO IT COMES OUT IN OUR MUSIC, AND IT'S THE FUEL FOR WHAT WE DO. And finding faith saved my life. So I'm not ashamed of it at all. AND MOST OF OUR ALBUM REFLECTS THAT." (emphases added)

http://flyleafonline.com/band/FAQ.php#1.4

Also II Corinthians 12.9: "But he said to me, 'My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.' Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me." (NIV)

Note that any work of art has a life and meaning independent from the artist, so if you want to take something else from this song you are free to do so. But to suggest that the artists may have meant something different when they've made their intentions quite clear, now THAT'S absurd.

the reason the song says "I tried to kill you
You tried to save me" is because they are talking about jesus, we cruxified him, then he died and then he came back from the dead. jesus is the savior and if you accept him and stay faithful to him you will go to heaven, but it is your choice and if you say no then you wont enter the kingdom of god. the chorus means that when we are weak god is our strength and since god is apart of us and since is perfect and we are perfect. god's strength is so big that we can run or live in it or just exist in it.

To me a hear two people behind these lyrics; A girl, and Jesus. "And how can you look at me, when I can't stand myself?" and He says with power and effect "Perfect In Weakness" and she realizes "I'm only perfect in just Your strength alone"

When she tried to fix her life herself "So open the windows to cool off" it doesn't go right "And heat pours in instead"
But with Him, even though "I tried to kill you", "You tried to save me"
Because His mercy is never ending, and to Him and His power, we are Never TOO far gone, He can always save us if we come to Him.

"I had a friend who was trying to live her life a certain way that she thought was good. And then she'd make a ton of commitments about how she was gonna be and what kind of relationship she was gonna be in. And then, slowly, those standards just fell lower and lower and then she just felt worse and worse. She got really burned in her relationships and she felt really kind of worthless about herself -- like she couldn't start over and she couldn't be good enough. The song is about how sometimes we're that way and sometimes we're weak. But, at the same time, God's strength is perfect when we're weak. And we can stand up in that. And that's what the song says -- 'My strength is perfect in your weaknesses.' Even when we're weak, he's strong. And if his mercy, his powers are failing, that's what the message is -- turn and rest, and choose life and not death, and be loved, and don't condemn yourself."
Thats what Lacey Says

JesusismineXDomRox thank-you so very much for putting that here. Flawless Regression it is not absurd at all to say that this song is talking about God when the writer of the song says so herself. You can take it anyway you want, people saying the truth about the song doesn't mean you can't have your own opinion. The song can mean something different for you but just because it means something different to you doesn't mean that it's not about God. Go ahead and have your opinions but don't say that people saying the real meaning is absurd.

i think this song is very strong, i think is about a person that feels that he is nobody and the only thing that he do good is be weak that is the only thing that he is perfect, in being weak and he can not believe that still being who he is someone is trying to save him even though he tried to kill him
