Lyrics for Better as interpreted by kiwifruit

Better Lyrics
If I kiss you where it's sore
If I kiss you where it's sore
Will you feel better, better, better
Will you feel anything at all
Will you feel better, better, better
Will you feel anything at all

Born like sisters to this world
In a town where blood ties are only blood
If you never say your name out loud to anyone
They can never ever call you by it

If I kiss you where it's sore
If I kiss you where it's sore
Will you feel better, better, better
Will you feel anything at all
Will you feel better, better, better
Will you feel anything at all

You're getting sadder, getting sadder, getting sadder, getting sadder
And I don't understand, and I don't understand
But if I kiss you where it's sore
If I kiss you where it's sore
Will you feel better, better, better
Will you feel anything at all
Will you feel better, better, better
Will you feel anything at all
Anything at all
Will you feel anything at all
Anything at all
Will you feel anything at all
Anything at all...

I've always thought this was written from a child's perspective because the language is so simple, and the persona doesn't seem to have a real grasp on the situation.

I thought maybe it's about an adopted siblin, or the child's mother being left by their father. hance the "And if you never say your name out loud to anyone, They never ever call you by it." The mother going back to the maiden name, or the adopted sisters original name.

It's one of my favourite Regina songs, It's so sweet and sad.

That's an interesting idea about the adoptive relatives...

I always (making it sound like I didn't only hear this late last year) thought that "Born like sisters to this world" was an indication of similar wavelengths and "And if you never say your name out loud to anyone,
They never ever call you by it" is avoiding connection, or ever being close to anyone.

To me this song (now called "better" on the new album Begin to Hope btw) is about trying to get close to someone and not knowing if it'll ever make a bit of difference to the other person (and clearly going to anyway).
Having been close to (grown up with/raised by) *severely* depressed people and trying to help them through though it made absolutely no difference, I appreciate it this way. And sisters of this world kinda hinting at the effect it has on the kisser (maybe why they are doing it?).

That Regina sings it in a way that she's still trying to help is really heartbreaking.

It's hard to analyze a song when it gets you emotionally. :)

Boo to this, I posted the lyrics to the real "Will you feel better" already.

This version (of the song, not lyrics) is terribly silly.

It seems like it's a testament to how if you live life just correcting the mistakes, instead of making a positive contribution, you risk nothing happening at all. In a pile of everything, if you don't stand out, you'll be picked over.

My first reaction to the song was that it was about someone trying to help someone else, but having absolutely no idea just how hurt the person is. I agree with kiwifruit about it sounding like a child because it's so naive. The person just has no idea of the extent of damage done to the person he/she is trying to help and it's really pretty heartbreaking.

However, that doesn't include the second verse of the song because I always got so caught up in the rest. It's an interesting verse because the first half seems to say that they are very close, but the second is about keeping secrets. I guess the blood ties being only blood could mean that, though they were born like sisters, it didn't mean anything because it was only blood, which would work with the idea of not understanding/knowing in the rest of the song. The final two lines of that verse seem to suggest that the person is keeping his/her problems to him/herself.

Maybe it does have something to do with depression or another disorder because there are lots of stigmas associated with disorders, so the person may be trying to keep it a secret so no one will "call [him/her] by it," but the problem with that is that he/she then can't be helped because no one knows what's wrong.

This song was originally known as "Will You Feel Better?" before Begin to Hope was recorded. I suppose "Better" is its official title now, but not at the time that the lyrics were transcribed.

I like this song! Hmm... I'm still trying to figure out what this song really means. I think it's about having a best friend and letting them know that you're always there for them - and when they have problems, you're always there to make them feel better. This song has simple lyrics but I think I can give meaning to this one:

"If you never say your name out loud to anyone
They can never ever call you by it"

Maybe the singer is telling her best friend/sister/whatever to "let the world know who you really are" - I'm not really talking about the "name" part, but I think it's supposed to mean something like, "you have to let the world know who you really are; stand out, show them what you're made of, so they would know what you are and that they could treat you the right way." Something like that. ;-)

it fells to me like she's talking about a best friend, someone she was friends with since she was born, that from
"Born like sisters to this world,
In a town where blood ties are only blood," which says, blood ties means nothing, what matters is that they're sisters.
Something happens to that friend of hers and that girl gets very depressed and apathic. that from "if I kiss you were it's sore will you fell better, will you fell anything at all?" like any small child, she was led to belive that kissing were it's sore made it feel better and she wants her friend to get better...
Now, the reason why her friend is depressed to me sounds like child abuse. I feel like the "In a town where blood ties are only blood" has a double meaning there. Regina is saying how wrong it is for her friend's father to do that to her.
"And if you never say your name out loud to anyone,
They never ever call you by it." Would be on the same idea. A kind of "you don't have feel related to him" "it doesn't matter that you have the same name, just don't tell anyone your name is that"

it feels like it's a bit too farfetch but another reading I have is the same idea but without the abuse part.. then the
"And if you never say your name out loud to anyone,
They never ever call you by it." would be "you'll stay alone if you don't talk to people" how will people call you by your name if you don' t tell them? In my experience with depression I always felt like I was alone and miserable and no one wanted to talk to me but it was I who was excluding myself. On the same page, if I never talked to anyone how would they get to know me?

The only thing that kinda confuses me is she says

"Born like sisters to this world in a town where blood ties are only blood"

if youre born like sisters (and sisters are blood) then its saying her and her friend, im guessing, are only like blood. that youre only close or love eachother because your family. It's like, how many of you have uncles or cousins that if they werent family, you wouldnt liek them or want to talk to them at all. It seems inconstistant with what shes trying to say. maybe I'm interpretting it wrong, anyone wanna try and help me?

To me, I think Regina is commenting on the degradation of some of the most sacred aspects of society..."blood ties are only blood"...as in, the fact that people are related to each other doesn't mean as much as it used to. Being family just means family, it doesn't necessarily mean that they're always looking out for each other, etc. And when she says "if you never say your name...they can never ever call you by it" reflects how globalization has changed our society and little towns aren't so little anymore, people don't always know their neighbors. In short, the message I got from it was that times change...it seemed very nostalgic. I have no idea if this is what she actually meant, this is just my own interpretation.

Personally I think she wrote this song for someone close to her that is depressed or are going through a rough time. The only thing she thinks could help (because a lot of times in these cases nothing helps) is to 'kiss you were it hurts,' - just being there for the person, or it could just be something she wants to try to make the person feel better.

"...getting sadder, And I don't understand..." I think this is a typical response to people who are depressed.

And the lack of feeling anything, like you are already dead, is also typical of people that are depressed: "Will you feel anything at all"

"Born like sisters to this world
In a town where blood ties are only blood"
This means this person is very close to her and they are living in a society that doesn't care. Thus they are as close as family SHOULD be.

This is an amazing song. Note the contrast between the 'happier' music and the words.

I feel like this song is about really wanting to help someone, but not knowing how or if you even can, hence, will you feel anything at all? And at the end of the song, the person was just getting sadder and sadder, and she couldn't understand, because she just wanted to the person to feel better. *sigh*

If I look at it like this, I'm not so sure anymore, but before, this song always felt similar somehow to her song "Your Honor", no matter its musical differences. Almost like it was based on the same situation, or maybe the same person or something... but I haven't thought about it enough, or maybe I just won't be able to think of anything else to support or break down this claim.

if I kiss you where itīs sore, will you feel better? of course! thatīs LOVE. I mean doesnīt matter if is a friend or whatever I think that this song is dedicated to someone that regina really loves... you can hurt your loved ones... like edward scissorhands... what you do when you hurt someone without wantinī it?

"If you never say your name out loud to anyone
They can never ever call you by it"

for me this part means that, that important person that regina is singin is in a deep depretion... because of a deep pain.

In a way this songs is like a mother taking care of her loved hurted child... same feelling, donīt you think?
