Lyrics for Après Moi as interpreted by kiwifruit

Après Moi Lyrics
I must go on standing
You can't break that which isn't yours
I must go on standing
I'm not my own, it's not my choice

Be afraid of the lame, they'll inherit your legs
Be afraid of the old, they'll inherit your souls
Be afraid of the cold, they'll inherit your blood
Après moi, le deluge, after me comes the flood

I must go on standing
You can't break that which isn't yours
I must go on standing
I'm not my own, it's not my choice

Be afraid of the lame, they'll inherit your legs
Be afraid of the old, they'll inherit your souls
Be afraid of the cold, they'll inherit your blood
Après moi le deluge, after me comes the flood

Fevrale dostat chernil i plakat
Pisat O Fevrale navsnryd
Poka grohochushaya slyakot
Vesnoyu charnoyu gorit

Be afraid of the lame, they'll inherit your legs
Be afraid of the old, they'll inherit your souls
Be afraid of the cold, they'll inherit your blood
Après moi le deluge, after me comes the flood

I must go on standing
You can't break that which isn't yours
I must go on standing
I'm not my own, It's not my choice

I must go on stan-stan-ding-ding
You can't, can't break that, that
Which isn't, isn't yours, yours
I'm not, not my own, own
It's not, not my choice, choice

It's from a Boris Pasternak poem, if anyone wants to know.

(He wrote Dr. Zhivago, oh yes he did.)

I really love this song

I believe the Russian part translatation is:

February, pick up your pen and weep,
Write poems about february in sobs and ink,
While thunder booming in the background
Is burning in the black of spring

It's actually..

february. get ink, shed tears.
write of it, sob your heart out, sing.
while torrential slush that roars,
burns in the blackness of the spring.

This was written from the perspective of a statue. I think it's about King Louis XV. He was the one who famously said "Apres moi le deluge" which means "after me come the floods." He was hated by the French people and his reign seeded the resentment towards the monarchy that eventually led to the French Revolution.

"You can't break that which isn't yours." I think she's singing about tradition here.

"Be afraid of the lame, they'll inherit your legs
Be afraid of the old, they'll inherit your souls
Be afraid of the cold, they'll inherit your blood
Apres moi le deluge, after me come the floods"
Sounds like a warning against the revolt.

P.S. Read Boris Pasternak's poem entitled 'February. Take your pen and weep,'.

actually "After me the flood," werent the words of Louis XV, but rather Madam de Pompadour. though that doesnt change the meaning.

I think that it might also have something to do with her wanting to kill herself...

"I must go on standing, you can't break that which isn't yours"

That sort of sounds like something that someone really religious would say, because some people believe their soul, their body doesn't belong to them.

Is anyone else annoyed when people think every song on this site is about someone wanting to kill themselves?

Not all music is a call for help...

Just like to point out that Valkyrio is right on thing. She doesnt use any common word for flood in french, she uses deluge, a another word for flood, but not any flood, a catastrophic flood of apocaliptic porportions and with obvious religious conotations.

If she is quoting or saying it, it's up to who listens. Is a affirmation of individuality?

You can't break a heart that doesn't belong to you, nor a will not your own.

"Apres moi, le deluge" may have been originated not by Louis XV, but by his mistress, Madame de Pompadour.

I think of a cathedral when I hear this song. "I, I must go on stan-stan/ding-dong." And of course, there's always the Beatitudes reference ("the meek shall inherit the earth").

lol Wilhelm, not a cry for help, trust me. But I've heard people live their lives under that pretense. "My life isn't my own, I have no right to decided whether I should live or die." It's a very common religious view on suicide. (Christian at least.)

i suppose this doesn't make sense with the rest of the song, but i always thought "I must go on standing, you can't break that which isn't yours" was talking to someone else who was hurting you, talking about being strong.

It reminds me of Jesus.

"I'm not my own, It's not my choice"

He wasn't really his own person, he was God's son, and he was sent here not to live for himself, he lived and died for people's sins. It wasn't his choice.

"Be afraid of the cold, they'll inherit your blood"

This line is about communion, and the current state of church-goers. They're so cold to religion. Cold about religion. Cold because religion. And the blood? Communion wine.

"Apres moi le deluge, after me comes the flood"

It's a sort of vengeful phrase, but after they killed Jesus, sprang Christianity. And look at all the good that's done us.

PS: I'm not religious, so I don't know if I'm understanding it correctly. It's just my interpretation.

You know, I actually think Dominic is right. I know that Regina's songs have a lot of Biblical allusions, so I wouldn't be surprised if Apres Moi really was about Jesus. The line, "I'm not my own..." could point to the scene in Gethsemane, when Jesus was saying, "Not my will but yours."

I like his idea about how the cold can refer to the blindly religious and communion.

I also think that the cold refers to the dead in general, the dead whose blood no longer runs. Many believe that Jesus will return and raise the dead back to life.

the only problem with that interpretation is that regina is jewish. she could still talk about jesus, but it's unlikely.

I think Apres moi le deluge is a saying , just like "This is way over my head" . I could be mistaken, but I should probably read Pasternak's poem first

Nick, she did write other songs that referred to Jesus, like the one with the plastic one, and the one with the devil at bethlehem... :)
