hahaha...i read the interview mailbox is referring to. I definitely thought that a flesh canoe was a vagina...
I love this song and the "easy pace" stage of a relationship he describes in it. It reminds me of staying in bed with someone you love, being under the sheets in the morning with the new light streaming in through the window ok I'm done

this is one of their best songs their should be more comments here. Its about the beginning of a relationship and getting to know your partner's body in a sexual way.

In the beginning when "young red bird" is used, red could symbolize love and and a bird could be someone who tosses from one place to the next. Then he describes his thoughts as tossing back and forth, which made me think of a bird's swooping motion.
he is reassuring himself of how normal these feelings are- "they're just natural feelings"- because he can't decide whether he should move towards- what he wants (emotional feelings) and what is right (rational thoughts). Then it sounds like his friends are telling him what is right, but he's not sure if he should follow it. He is confused but is later reassured by the one he admires.

uuggghhh, break my heart! who hasn't felt that way about somebody, when each day you don't see them tears at you until you find something else to occupy your mind with... it's so easy to get caught up in that.

i agree with the whole discovering each other's bodies... but i think it's more being just comfortable than really discovering. he's describing that time in every relationship where you're "that close". to be able to laugh all day and be naked "making funny faces in the mirror of the bathroom" it's being yourself entirely and happy with your lover.
which is the most beautiful damn thing
and makes this song so lovely.

I heard in an interview that a "Flesh Canoe" was two people lying in bed together facing each other...although the vagina thing certainly works too

flesh canoe, well this song is about how he as a man is torn from what he wants and what he needs. He's trying to see if his feelings are real, or merely created through intimacy. He is just trying to figure out what distinguishes feelings of love from lust.
