I'd rather be lonely
I'd rather be free
I'm as sure as the moon rolls around the sea

But I like watching you undress
And I think we're at our best
By the flicker by the light of the t.v. set

'Cause I can't remember why I hated you
Can't remember why I still do
But I'm a sure as the moon rolls around you
That I could be happy
Happy
Oh so happy
Happy
Oh so happy so happy

They warn you about killers and thieves and knives
I worry about cancer and living right
But my momma never warned me about my own destructive appetite
Or the pitfalls of control
How it locks you in your grave
Looking for someone to be saved under my restraint
So I could be happy
Happy
Oh so happy
Happy
So happy
Happy
So happy so happy

I'm as sure
As the moon
Rolls around

I definitely think this I religious. Like she's struggling with whether or not she believes buteither way she can be happy. maybe I just think this because that's how I feel about religion myself.

General Comment:I think this song about being out of love with someone you are in a long term relationship with, when their gone you miss them, when their around you hate them, but sometimes theirs those small moments that feel the same as they did when you were still in love, and this songs about living a mediocre life, and feeling like your wasting it being unhappy with someone you love, and have a beautiful past with, but unfortunately you are not with anymore.

I could be wrong, but when I listen to this song, that's what I get out of it.

General Comment:This song gives me the chills. I love how fragile her voice is, especially when she sings, "so happy..." over and over; she's obviously not happy.

I think this song is about her being with a man that she knows she would be better off without; one of the few things holding them together is sex. If they are at their best in front of a flickering television, then they don't have the strongest bond. However, she's been unlucky in love, and she hopes that some man- maybe this man- can make her happy and give her that nameless bliss. Yet, she's spoiled her relationships by trying to control the man- something her mother never warned her would cause trouble in her life.

General Comment:I think this song is about "getting stuck in your ways" (lyrics from another song on the album) and how sometimes you'll stay in a relationship with someone even though you know you'd be better off without it. You stick around because you have someone to control - and "I like watchin you undress"

Anyone care to explain that part to me? My brain can't quite process it for some reason.
The last line there could possibly be related to religion because it references being saved.

Otherwise, I've always felt that this song meant that the cons of a relationship have started outweighing the pros. And while there are intense ups and downs, she's concluded that she'd be happier if she were out of it.

General Comment:there's an interview about this album & jenny says that it's about her struggle with religion. many of the other songs on this record get that across a lot more clearer. but i don't know where the religious theme is in this song...

General Comment:When she sings, "So I could be Happy... oh so happy, so happy.." over and over again, it reminds me of the film "Roman Holiday" The scene where Gregory Peck carries a sedated Audrey Hepburn to his apartment and she sings to herself, "so... happy, so... happy" and if you've seen the movie, she clearly wasn't happy with her life.

Not that I'm saying that it's relative, i just thought to put it out there cause they sound quite similar, and the chorus always remind me of that scene.

General Comment:Everyone has given explanations for bits and pieces of this song, and while it is pretty straight forward, I will give my full explanation.

In the beginning she is saying that she would rather be alone because shed be free. She is pretty sure of that. But then she has found someone who she really cares about. Someone who she enjoys doing the simple things in life with (which in my opinion is true love, a relationship where you can be yourself, and where you can do absolutely nothing with the person and still have a good time...) BUT i digress...

These next few lines i can really relate to. She says "i cant remember why i hated you, and cant remember why i still do" Often in relationships, we dont always fall in love with the person at first sight. We meet them, form opinions about them, (and in this case maybe Jenny didnt like him) and one day you could wake up and realize you cant live w/o the person. So it sounds like this may have happened to Jenny and she didnt like the guy and still has certain things she dislikes in him but she realizes he can make her Happy,oh so Happy.

Now this verse is my favorite line in any song. She is talking about all the normal things that can cause you harm and how other people always warn you of these things. But the one thing no one ever tells you is how You can be your own worst enemy. Control is a crazy thing. There are people out there (i admit i am one of them) who cant stand to not have control of a situation. In love though, you cant have that attitude. Love is about losing control and letting yourself go. Jenny realizes that she has a hard time doing this.

She says that she knows she can be happy with this person, she just has to let it happen
    ~Peace
