Covered and coarse
I could wait my turn
To pay them back
So Original,
Lets take it all back
You can hide but I wont, how do you know

Blacked out and bleeding
Take it away
One look and you'll never believe,
That this cant hold us down.

If I wake up
On my own
If something happens
Please come home
Wake me up before you go

If you ever know
That it can never hurt
As much as this does
Its so original
Lets make this all work
You could run but I wont, how do you know

Blacked out and bleeding
Take it away
One look and you'll never believe,
That this wont hold us down.

If I wake up
On my own
If something happens
Please come home
Wake me up before you go on.

You cant hold us down
This wont hold us down
You cant hold us down

If you wake up
(If I wake up)
On your own
(On my own)
If something happens
Please come home
(You wont stop us now)
Wake me up before you go
(This wont hold us down)
I hope your happy on your own
(You cant hold us down)

    General Comment:I really do believe that this song is about Neon Genesis Evangelion. A lot of Fightstar's songs are influenced about it and the themes reappear in the lyrics. I suggest you watch this anime, even if you don't typically watch the stuff. It can be mind blowing. Alright, the first reason is the title "Grand Unification" can be synonymous with the Human Instrumentality Project, since in the eyes of all the characters the merging of the human consciousness is the final step in evolution. Melded together, they do make a grand unification of all minds. They are all the same once the AT fields (the field that keeps the soul sacred and untouchable in the show) are gone. Individuality is lost. This song shows everything setting off and after Shinji Ikari is saved from the first angel by Misato.

    "Covered and coarse
    I could wait my turn
    To pay them back"

    -Rei Ayanami

    Rei Ayanami, the only Eva pilot that we know of at this point is severly beaten by the first angel. So much so that she is wheeled out on a medical bed and she is bruised, cut, bleeding and covered in bandages. It wouldn't be best for her to fight at all, but she know that she must if called upon. So this line is her realization of her injuries and knowing that it would be best for her to stay put and have time to heal and recover. However, she also wants to stop the first Angel, or "pay them all back."

    "So Original,
    Lets take it all back
    You can hide but I wont"

    -Gendo Ikari

    Shinji, seeing that his father has only reappeared into his life simply because Gendo wants him to fight says that he won't do it. Rei Ayanami falls and Shinji catches her and sees her injuries and it quite horrified. Gendo says that he doesn't have time for this, that Shinji can go home, then tells Ayanami to get up and get into Eva Unit 01. In this case, "Original" would be Rei Ayanami since she is the First Child and the first Eva Pilot.

    "How do you know?"

    - Shinji Ikari

    Somehow, that strikes a chord with Shinji and he says that he'll pilot the Eva, saying that Gendo will have to acknowledge his existence one way or another and he'll prove he's not a coward.

    ~~~~~~~
    "Blacked out and bleeding
    Take it away
    One look and you'll never believe,
    That this cant hold us down."
    During the fight with the First Angel, Shinji is completely unprepaired and is severely wounded by the creature (a shot through the eye of his Eva). Shinji is yet again horrified, thinking that it's impossible for him to beat the First Angel no matter what everyone else says might be possible. Pretty much, he's losing faith in himself.
    ~~~~~

    "If I wake up
    On my own
    If something happens
    Please come home
    Wake me up before you go"

    Shinji wakes up in another "consciousness" per say. He says to himself that everyone will be better off without him, and that even though he was completely useless, he wishes that at least he won't be forgotten about. Conflicting thoughts, but that is the madness that is going through a boy's brain who believes that he is dead and has lived a life abandoned by his father and whose mother died.

    ~~~~~
    "If you ever know
    That it can never hurt
    As much as this does
    Its so original
    Lets make this all work
    You could run but I wont, how do you know"
    The way the Eva system works is that there is a direct line between the nervous system of the pilot and the robot. So any damage done to the robot is directly felt to the person. However, it also allows for a greater range of movement. SO, in a way, this part is telling about the pain that Shinji is going through is real, but also it can also mean that the pain of being hurt in combat won't ever be as much as knowing that his father doesn't care about him at all as long as Gendo's plans are exacted.
    ~~~

    You cant hold us down
    This wont hold us down
    You cant hold us down

    Shinji goes into berserk mode at this part and ultimately defeats the first Angel. He is revived by some other force (later known as the soul of his mother that was inside the Eva) and completely wreaks havoc upon the First Angel until it's defeated. At last, he has a glimmer of hope in the situation.

    General Comment:Yeah incubassman is right, the whole album is about people's last experiences. They're new album is much more personal which I prefer, the whole thing resonates with feeling, some of it is really touchingly understated (unfamiliar ceilings...just wow)

    General Comment:Well I read that Grand Unification is a concept album. Its a fantasy last day on Earth, and looking through the atwork and lyrics, it makes sense. I think some of the songs are accounts of various people on their last day alive.

    'If I wake up
    On my own
    If something happens
    Please come home
    Wake me up before you go'

    I think someone is asking someone close to them to stay close. The rest of the song is more defiance of whatever is gonna kill everyone.....

    General Comment:Well, the lyrics are wrong for a start. Only minor things, but it changes the outlook of the song a bit.
    These guys were amazing live.

    General Comment:I think this song is about a guy and his g/f's relationship falling apart and he's sayin that it wont "hold them down" and he's willing to work for it! And if she wakes up on her own and feels lonely he wants her to come back! He's also saying that he could run ... but he doesn't want to! At the end he says "I hope you're happy on your own" ... meaning he wants her but she doesn't want him enough to work for it and she will be lonely now! .. Probs got that completely wrong ... but hey, I tried! =) xXx

    General Comment:yeah i like the song. i don't get the anime in the video though. any relevance or just for fun? I'm a bit confused though. I think she left him and how he's pleading that he wants her back.
