Lyrics for Coffee and Cigarettes as interpreted by moonlights

Coffee and Cigarettes Lyrics
Wake up, take your pills dear
I know this time of year ain't right for you
You came with a sickness
Shot down back in Christmas kamikaze rain

And I'm sure you've lost that weight again
And I'm sure the pills keeps pouring in
Like smoke that falls, it's caving into you
So put me on a plane and fly me to anywhere
Put me on a plane and fly me to anywhere
Put me on a plane and fly me to anywhere with you
With you

One night when you woke up
You bled til you spoke up
Oh, this ain't pretty dear
With clocks, watch the time go
Til spring, when the sun can finally be free

And I'm sure you've lost that weight again
And I'm sure the pills keeps pouring in
We'll scream at night to make it go away
So put me on a plane and fly me to anywhere
Put me on a plane and fly me to anywhere
You should put me on a plane and fly me to anywhere but you
But you
But you

We'll scream at night to make them go away
So put me on a plane and fly me to anywhere
Put me on a plane and fly me to anywhere
Put me on a plane and fly me to anywhere but you
But you
But you
But you

this song is beautiful. it reminds me of a good friend of mine.

how we share dreams of grandeur, how we want to explore everything and how the trials of life always seem to get in our way. silly things like weight, addiction, and others.

Augustana at their best.

I think it might be about him loving her despite all her imperfections and her unhappiness.

oh i love this song. it's so bittersweet.

i agree, he loves this girl no matter the fact that she's unhappy and imperfect, overdosing on pills and drugs and self-injury..

but nonetheless, one of my most favorite songs ever.

I think its that he knows someone has problems. Maybe its not even that she overdoses, or that she hurts herself. It seems to obvious that way.
I think that he knows somethings wrong, and he can't really understand it, but he's trying. He wants to understand, and he wants to be able to help ("put me on a plane and fly me to anywhere with you"). He wants to know what and why and how so that he can try to fix her, or at least console her the right way.
This song made me cry the first time I heard it. I got extremely sick right around the time it came out and no one could understand, no matter how hard they tried. And this song just made me feel...not so alone.

all of Augustana's songs have a recurring theme of going away and coming back and just trying to look for a home.
and from the Augustana interviews I've read, they've been to 48 states out of the 50, so that kinda shows something. And Dan Layus (the lead singer) said the songs are more about looking for a home in a person rather than a place.

i'm in love with this song...my fav line is when it says "so put me on a plane and fly me to anywhere with you" then at the end it switches to "...anywhere but you." omg...amazing...to me, this song is about a guy and his g/f...the g/f isn't "well" but the guy wants to be there for her if she needs him, but at the end of the song, he realizes its pointless trying to save her...she's too far gone

i may be completely off, but i thought this song could be about someone with an eating disorder. she "came with a sickness" of wanting to be perfect, and might be taking pills to keep it off. her boyfriend, or friend singing this song, knows she has a problem and wants to help her, but can't. he want to take her away from all these troubles, but she's too sick. he knows she's not getting better and keeps losing more weight, so at the end he can't deal with her and leaves, ( 'anywhere with you' to 'anywhere but you'). very sad, but amazing song.

I agree with Annie.
I suffer from an eating disorder and the moment I heard this song, that's all I could think of.
"I know this time of year ain't right for you
You came with a sickness
Shot down back in Christmas kamikaze rain"
Christmas and other holidays are killers for people with an ED. Especially Christmas. Plus, it's cold..and people with a low BMI get really cold.

"And I'm sure you've lost that weight again
And I'm sure the pills keeps pouring in
Like smoke that falls, it's caving into you"
I think here augustana is portraying how many people with ED's try to escape with weight pills/other forms of harmful drugs as well as cigarettes.

Eating dissorders and cigarettes almost come hand is hand.

However, this song is brilliant. As is Augustana in general. It's perfect.

You guys guess eating disorder. To me it seems like this girl is dying of cancer and there's nothing he can do.

ok i think this song is about a girl with depression problems, who gets even more depressed in the winter, hence the lyrics
"Wake up, take your pills dear
I know this time of year ain't right for you
You came with a sickness
Shot down back in Christmas kamikaze rain"
and then once spring comes, and the sun comes back the depression gets better...i can totaly relate to this song interpretted that way soo yeah...

I think this song is about bipolar (manic depression), but I don't think a lot of people would see that unless they were very close to someone who had bipolar. I can see how some think it's about an eating disorder, but there seem to be too many references to pill taking (antidepressants, perhaps) and seasonal issues.

The latter is important. People with bipolar tend to have a much rougher time in the winter, due to lack of sunshine. (Some even use light therapy in the mornings to help combat this.) A lot of times, people with more severe cases of it will sleep for nearly whole days, or just stay in bed, in a total funk. This falls in lines with lines like "I know this time of year ain't right for you" and "Til spring, when the sun can finally be free," which to me sort of goes with the unsaid idea that "you can be free then."

This is just how I see it.

This song has an obvious meaning. I just love the chorus. It always puts me in a relaxed state. And just how the whole song is sung with a tired, droppy tone.

I have to wholeheartedly agree with leliathomas. Being surrounded by as well as an individual with bipolar, it fits PERFECTLY. That was the first thing my husband and I thought of when we heard it. Bipolar people are

1. very prone to indulge in coffee and cigarettes. I'm not sure why, but we do.

2. Frequently fluctuate in weight depending on the stage.

3. Would more than likely jump on the opportunity to just get up and go. No planing, very impulsive, AKA manic.

4. He mentions seasons in a part of the song. It's very common for anyone with some sort of depression to be more so in the winter. While he could be referencing seasonal depression, we did consider that Christmas may have been some sort of unpleasant anniversary for her, which is a huge trigger.

5. "One night when you woke up
You bled til you spoke up"

Cutting, plain and simple. I also have to wonder if he's referencing dissociation, which is very common in PTSD patients who are also frequently diagnosed bipolar. That would support the unpleasant anniversary theory.

its obviously about seasonal affective disorder... thats when a person gets really depressed during the winter, hence "i know this time of year ain't right for you"
the pills are antidepressants, and weight gain and loss is common during depression shes waiting for the spring. its scientifically proven that the absence of the sun can make someone depressed, which is her "sickness"

This song is so beautiful. It STILL makes me cry. Its sort of amazing how simple this song is yet, on the whole CD, it shows the most love and care. I think this song could have various interpretations. Just like Death Cab for Cutie's "I Will Follow You Into The Dark". But for me it means someone that has problems and despite those problems he still loves her and will follow her anywhere. I remember i was reading an intevew where Dan, the lead singer, was talking about all the refrences about moving and flying and all the places and he said "Really, all the places are more refering to finding a home in somebody." But it says "im sure youv lost that weight again and im sure the pills keep pouring in" so maybe he hasnt seen this girl in a while. because it says "im sure"...idk. lol but i just love this song and this band. its not just singing to sing. its singing for someone to understand he loves her. maybe he doesnt sing for enjoyment of others. maybe he sings cause he has to...or else someone wont realize they are loved...

This song is to me about Seasonal Affective Disorder. As everyone else says, I think it's a man with a girfriend that has SAD. It all fits, the pills, the weight loss, the "time of year" that's not right for her. And the change between "With you" and "But you" also tells me that no matter how hard he tries to make life easier for her, she doesn't get better, and he gives up.

I agree with leliathomas so much. I know the song may and may not be about Bipolar disorder, but when I first heard it I could relate to it in that sense because I have it and it truely does depict the Disorder perfectly.
It's also easy to relate to the friend/lover singing it because of the realationship I'm in currently. I mean, it's wonderful because it was him who sent it to me in such a lovely manner. Aha. [: I never knew it was so much deeper than what I thought.

It's a beautiful song which I could only guess relates to Bipolar through a lover/Friends eye's.
It's wonderful. [:
