She smelled like 2 am
Took him back to her place
Where all the saints adorned the walls.
To never ending from grace
He knew he should leave
And this could only turn cold
She was a bad bad girl
So he told her so

Under the shadows engulfed
He had the whisper of lust
He said 'no touching tonight'
She closed her eyes in his trust
She said 'tuck me in'
He knew his judgment was sound
Still he pulled back the sheets
And said

You better lie down 'cause the angels are watching
She closed her eyes and said with the talking
'you can hurt me do whatever you like'

Her every word was in italics
As it would fall from her lips
The walls were made of broken promises
He hoped this wouldn't be his.
She said 'tell me what to do'
He knew right then he was done
Felling lonely and confused
He said

'you better lie down the angels are watching'
She closed her eyes and said with the talking
'you can hurt me do whatever you like'
So he said 'shut your mouth girl the angels are listening'
She crossed herself now the moments are missing
'you can hurt me do whatever you like'

glancing through the curtain
Questions unheard of
She spoke in third person
And he had seen everyone
Awkward and embittered
Said 'shut the door when you go'
Perhaps he should've reconsidered (oh no)
When he said

You better lie down the angels are watching
She closed her eyes and said with the talking
'you can hurt me do whatever you like'
So he said 'shut your mouth girl the angels are listening'
She crossed herself now the moments are missing
'you can hurt me do whatever you like'

My Interpretation:I think they're 2 young drunk people who happen to be friends and probably interested in each other to some extent. Either way, the guy doesn't feel this is the time or state of mind to be intimate, for obvious reasons, but even more specific being that she might have just gotten out of a relationship or has had known bad relationship experiences. He knew his judgment was sound like it says, but I think her "questions on her tongue" and how he had "seen every one" was him anticipating her being upset with him and thinking maybe he didn't care about her by turning down her sexual advances. Also her telling him to "shut the door when you go" made him wonder when he left if he had ruined his chances with her.

I think the religious references are just to emphasize the sexual tension and also the vulnerability of the girl in her current drunken and possibly hurt state. I think he was being pretty clever and racy by connecting the 2 it's a lot more interesting and dramatic then just choosing not to take advantage of a drunk girl trying to seduce you.

My Interpretation:Girl is drunk and tries to seduce him.
He is the one who's feeling guilty about it. Maybe it's because he would be taking advantage of a drunk girl or because he's against promiscuous sex (he remembers his morals by seeing the Saints).
Turns out that this bitch is doing anything to have him. Seriously, "tuck me in"?!
    Also, she's dirty.
Hail that guy who repents. He's awesome.

    Girls are evil. :3

My Interpretation:So a friend and I have been kicking song meanings around on this one. Here's my two cents.

Taking the song title literally, perhaps it IS his sister (promiscuous or not), she came home wasted, he's making sure she gets to bed, she is trying to seduce her brother and the “angels” he refers to are their parents. The Saints that adore the walls could be family photographs…..

General Comment:There's a lot to translate in this song. I think this is about a guy and a girl who went out, the chick lives in a religious place for one reason or another, and is apparently a slutty drunk. He's trying to take care of her, and the phrase "the walls were made of broken promises" leads me to believe she's been through some stuff, and the guy doesn't want to add to it by sleeping with her -- but it's incredibly tempting and part of him regrets not accepting her offer.

Every line tells a piece of a story in this one, there's a lot to read into it. I'm not going to break it apart word for word here though.

General Comment:What if the saints reference is a bit more metaphorical? Saints are often considered to be ancestors in a way and this song could be referencing maybe family pictures or something such as that. I agree that overall this is talking about a rather innocent girl who is trying to be less that way. The line "you can hurt me do whatever you like"? My overall sense [partially due to my personal bias I guess] is it is about a girl who is like a guy's sister friend wise, who is drunk, and maybe a bit screwed in the head. They get drunk and he tries to bring her home to her place. She tries t seduce him and he knows it would be taking advantage of her. I think there is a bit of a religious undertone but that could easily all be metaphorical. Morals are definitely thought of with religion a lot of the time and you could easily use Catholic imagery any time you want. It easily removes things from a situation so that it can be seen through new eyes and interrupted into other people's eyes.

General Comment:I always saw "Sister" as a religious figure here...not as sister as sibling...eww...wtf? But yeah basically she is religious...wants some sex...but the guy doesn't want to do it because he feels the "angels are watching"...you get the point. I love this song...something about it makes it great to listen to. Sure it may sound monotonous but I really like the beat.

General Comment:Wow, lot of comments, I think you all have managed to say what needs to be said, but I pretty much agree with Cunla567, with the addition of the guy being drunk as well

General Comment:This is another one of my fav, if not my fav song. I think its about S&M and naughty kinky sex. It could be two strangers hooking up or just a couple role playing. Who knows...its a hot, sexy song. I love it!

General Comment:this is probably one of my fav songs ever, and people have said shes super religious (a nun or catholic girl), or his real sister, but when i hear this song i think like its his best friends little sister ergo making her like his sister. so maybe their at a party and his friend tells him to take her home, maybe their parents are out of town (or else they wouldn't be at the party at all, cause their parents may be religious)

She smelled like 2 am - shes drunk

took him back to her place - they went to her house together

where all the saints adorned the walls.
delivering her from grace - theirs alot of religious stuff around cause her fam is devout

    he knew he should leave
and this could only turn cold - this is his best friends little sister, so he shouldnt be here with her acting this way ( meaning shes probably flirtatious as often younger siblings get crushes on their older siblings friends at some point or another)

she was a bad bad girl
so he told her so - probably kidding around cause their drunk

    Under the shadows of doubt
he had the whisper of lust - while hes telling himself shes his sister he knows hes kinda into her, he takes her upstairs to put her to bed.

    he said 'no touching tonight'
she closed her eyes in his trust - shes still trying to be flirtatious and hes trying to stop her cause he knows its wrong

    she said 'tuck me in'
he knew his judgment was sound - she really wants him and this is an act of desperation getting him to the bed, and he figured he could resist

still he pulled back the sheets - but he couldnt so he falls and ends up getting iin bed with her, maybe he just holds her cause hes still trying to stop himself.

    and said

    [Chorus]
you better lie down cuz the angels are watching- telling her she needs to stop and invokes the word angels hoping it will remind her of god since her family is devout. i always picture a cross above her bed.

she closed her eyes and said quit the talking
'you can hurt me do whatever you like'- she wants him to shut up about why they shouldnt, and in another act of desperation she offers to do anything he wants.

Her every word was in italics
as it would fall from her lips - i think this could mean shes trying to be sexxxy and whisper offering him stuff, and its kinda weird to hear her saying these things cause shes like a sister to him.

the walls were made of broken promises
he hoped this wouldn't be his. - like broken promises from boyfriends to be with her or to stay or w/a and he doesnt want to be "another jerk" and doesnt want to betray his friends trust.

She said 'tell me what to do'
he knew right then he was done - she keeps trying to offer him everything and be sexxxy and he really is having trouble controlling himself, quite possible that shes a virgin

    feeling lonely and confused
he said - he really wants to cause hes been 'lonely' lately, and shes confusing him with its so wrong but it would feel so right.

    [Chorus]
'you better lie down the angels are watching'- hes trying to make her stop

she closed her eyes and said quit the talking
'you can hurt me do whatever you like'- she keeps offering him to do w/e he wants to her.

so he said 'shut your mouth girl the angels are listening' - hes still trying to make her stop because hes losing control and again he tries to invoke an image of god.

she crossed herself now the moments are missing - like mocking his talk of angels maybe?

'you can hurt me do whatever you like' - she keeps at it

glancing through the curtain - he thinks her brothers home

questions on her tongue- shes asking if its her brother

she spoke in third person - cause shes drunk

and he had seen every one - hes seen all the sides of her from the cute innocent little sister to the horny drunk girl

    awkward and embittered
said 'shut the door when you go' - shes pissed he wont screw her so she tells him to just leave, and she feels awkward for talking like that and acting desperate and showing him that side of herself, cause now hes made her feel foolish

perhaps he should've reconsidered (oh no) - as hes walking out her bedoom door he thinks "but what if i did" cause he wants to, and the (oh no) is like a sense of panic like "oh no, here we go again"

    when he said

    [Chorus]
you better lie down the angels are watching
she closed her eyes and said quit the talking
'you can hurt me do whatever you like'
so he said 'shut your mouth girl the angels are listening'
she crossed herself now the moments are missing
'you can hurt me do whatever you like' - hes recapping what he told her and whether he was right to not do it or not, and hes just kind of thinking about everything that happened, how she acted and the things she said. he either goes home or falls asleep on his friends couch thinking about it, and how he wanted to, and maybe even that hed see how she felt when she was sober

lol ok i know i went a bit far at the end, but thats how i picture it. this song is one of my absolute favorites ever. anyway, i could be wrong, its just my perception. i mean i have alot of friends who i call brother and tend to call me little sister and i call their familys like "mom" and "dad" but it doesnt mean im religious, a nun, or their real fam. like i said its just my interpretation.
