She’s got the kind of look that defies gravity
She’s the greatest cook
And she’s fat free

She’s been to private school
And she speaks perfect French
She’s got the perfect friends
Oh isn’t she cool?

She practices Tai Chi
She'd never lose her nerve
She's more than you deserve
She's just far better than me

Hey, hey

So don’t bother
I won’t die of deception
I promise you won’t ever see me cry
Don’t feel sorry

And don't bother
I’ll be fine
But she’s waiting
The ring you gave to her will lose its shine
So don’t bother, be unkind

I’m sure she doesn’t know
How to touch you like I would
I beat her at that one good
Don’t you think so?

She's almost six feet tall
She must think I'm a flea
I’m really a cat, you see
And it's not my last life at all

Hey, hey

So don't bother
I won't die of deception
I promise you won't ever see me cry
Don't feel sorry

Don't bother
I’ll be fine
But she's waiting
The ring you gave to her will lose its shine
So don’t bother, be unkind

[Whispering]
For you, I'd give up all I own
And move to a communist country
If you came with me, of course
And I'd file my nails so they don't hurt you
And lose those pounds, and learn about football
If it made you stay, but you won't, but you won't

So don't bother,
I'll be fine, I'll be fine, I'll be fine, I'll be fine
I promise you won't ever see me cry

And after all I'm glad that I'm not your type
I promise you won't ever see me cry

Don't bother,
I'll be fine, I'll be fine, I'll be fine, I'll be fine
I promise you won’t ever see me cry

Don't bother,
I'll be fine, I'll be fine, I'll be fine, I'll be fine
I promise you won't ever see me cry

And after all I'm glad that I'm not your type, not your type, not your type, not your type
I promise you won't ever see me cry

General Comment:The song is a big Screw You to the jerk that prefers someone unrealistically perfect or "more than he deserves."

"She's far better than me" could refer to a new girl her boyfriend found, or it could also be a metaphor that the ex is never satisfied with her just as she is. She would "give up all she owns," "move to a communist country," and is willing to "lose the pounds," "talk about football", and "file her nails", essentially changing everything about herself - looks, nature, personality.

However she realizes he "won't stay" anyway. She realizes she's better off without him and tears away from the relationship as she's "not his type," resolute in not letting him see her cry.

Maybe I'm just projecting (haha), but many in relationships aren't happy with someone perfectly imperfect in front of them, and unwilling to accept other's flaws. The song is to "don't bother" with people who will always have that grass-is-greener-on-the-other-side syndrome. However, as the song says, the "ring will lose its shine," meaning that like something new and shiny at first, whatever you thought you wanted gets old and he/she will run into the same problem again.

General Comment: I can sort of relate to this song. My sister (who is not blood related) is perfect compared to me. Makes good grades, sociable, etc... and went out with the guy she knew I liked. Well her bf isn't getting "it" from her and asked sexual things to me. I didn't do anything but I was pissed, like i'm just meant for sex because I am not the girl who makes A's and plays sports.

General Comment:All though this song is about like telling her ex he dosn't deserve the next girl, it's almost like shakira is mad at her too a little...

General Comment:i always thought it was about a guy that left shakira for someone else... and she's obviously describing her, and being likem "yeah, she's cool, but i don't even care anymore if you're going to be like that, cause you're stupid."

    just the feeling i get.

General Comment:I disagree with you people. I don't see this song as Shakira being the other woman. I see it as a guy she once loved/liked/cared for has gotten a new girlfriend and she's everything Shakira can't be. I think she's just saying how perfect his girl is and how she'd have given up the world to be with him but he wouldn't stay or care. I can see where everyone else is coming from, but thats now how I interpret the song.

General Comment:i think you're completely right, inkless. shakira has revealed insecurity about small before ("next to her cheap silicone i look minimal" from objection, for example.) (in fact, this song's a lot like "objection.")
also the girl seems to be almost an opposite of shakira--tall, speaks french, can't touch him as well, etc. very interesting.

General Comment:I did see an interview, where she said its (like someone else said) about her insecurities like her lover leaving her for everything she's not. I first thought it was about a cheater of course.
'And lose those pounds, and learn about football' (I heard this part like 'lose those pounds an live by a fruit bowl' :P

General Comment:And remember the videos to all songs are artistic interpretations of the songs not really an actual depiction of its "meaning." The video clearly depicts Shakira's insecurities through the image of an affair, but the song itself is not about an affair.

General Comment:Does anyone out there listen to any Shakira interviews? In this song she specifically writes about her own insecurities that there is or would be a woman who is thinner, more beautiful, speaks more languages, etc. If any one is interested in her comments about this particular song, I would suggest going to youtube and doing a bit of sleuthing.

General Comment:Sorry - in my last comment I didnt mean 'leave for the other girl,' but rather NOT leave the other girl (fiancee) for her.
