Let's play a little game
On scribbled paper
You guess the letters
And I'll draw the hanging man

Hint number one is
Five letters inscribed over
The lips of eyeless woman
Asking me for needles and a thread to sew her head back together again
She reaches forward
And grabs ahold of my sleeve
Her antennae wrap around me
Her lungs infect me as she breathes...

The roadkill scent of violent city

Oh swollen anthill sore
Insects desperate cries
Oh infected for
Doomsday stomp from the skies

This town made its guesses
But can't spell her own name
A five letter word for the oncoming plague
A stick figure dangling from stoplight grave

Song Meaning:i think this song refers to nineva which i think was the most sinful city on the planet that god wiped from existence in the bible. i could be wrong tho.

General Comment:It seems to me that it could be flood, whore, or death. In any case, during the flood the passover and during the apocalypse, were talking about the same thing. People who have rejected God and are now paying the price of their sin.

General Comment:Inhale is right. I also read somewhere that the song was specifically written about his home town. As for the what the "stick man dangling from stoplight grave" means, it seems pretty obvious to me... If you draw a hangman's noose as you would in the game hangman, what does it look like? A stoplight. It's just a clever way of describing a hangman's noose without actually saying hangman's noose (cause who wants to be obvious about it anyway?).

General Comment:I talked to the Schwab after the Chicago show of the Scream the Prayer Tour last night. My guess was that the 5-letter word is Stomp, just because that seems like the obvious choice. However, Schwab says that the word is Death and that the song is about Long Beach, CA.

General Comment:i really like ominousoat and bewareofthesnowman's theory of it being about the whore of babylon.

however, if it isn't as profound as we think it is then schwab is probably out there somewhere, reading these and laughing at us pathetic fans groping for some hint of meaning in these lyrics. (he has said before that he really isn't a "spiritual guru", after all.)
i sure as heck hope that's not true, though.

here's my personal view: i really like said theory because it really does seem to fit very well and it gives the song a powerful meaning.
total agreement, i love it, many kudos to you guys.

General Comment:According to Project's short-lived podcast, this song is about the band briefly living in Long Beach, and being happy to leave it.
And I had thought it was something really profound.

General Comment:as i listened to the song yesterday i was singing it and kind of picturing it in my mind and i said aloud. flood! is it flood? stick figure dangling from stop light grave. picture that in a flood today. it's obvious people died in the flood with Noah, maybe this is a targum for that in our days. and doomsday stomp from the skies... rain? could it be? perhaps. something to think about. could be completely wrong but i thought i'd throw it out there to see if it sparks any more genius that i have already read here.

General Comment:I heard that, according to Schwab [at some point], the "five letter word" was "stomp." This is like third hand, though, so I'm not really certain.

    P.S. Nice one, elevator! =p
