Lyrics for Face of God as interpreted by RazorbladeKiss6677

Face of God Lyrics
I'm drained but aching for more
and the devil inside
is reading the words of the saddest poem
to be engraved on the stone of my grave

I'd kill to share your pain
(and carry the shame)
and sell my soul for you just to say:

I dream what you're dreaming
and feel what you're feeling
loves our shadow on the wall
with the face of God

Nothing will be enough
for the ones who keep on stumbling
in the garden of withering trust
with out the courage to leave

Oh, I'd take my life
for your kiss
(grant me my wish)
and lose it all
to take you across the abyss

I dream what you're dreaming
and feel what you're feeling
loves our shadow on the wall
with the face of God

You dream what I'm dreaming
and see what I'm seeing
loves our shadow on the wall
with the face of God

Labrynth in the shape of a heart
loves secret architecture
I find myself to be lost
in the arms of your fate

I'd kill to share your pain
(please let me stay)
and sell my soul for you
just to say love's name in vain
agian and agian

I dream what you're dreaming
and feel what you're feeling
loves our shadow on the wall
with the face of God

you dream what I'm dreaming
and feel what I'm feeling
loves our shadow on the wall
with the face of God

loves our shadow on the wall
With the face of
(Face of)
The face of
(Face of)
God

Face Of
God

i so love this song...i take it as he yearns for the person soo much as to want to share their bad parts. and the shadows...i take that as sexual symbolism

Great drum intro! The melodies turn out to be crap though, and the song has poor lyrics.

RazorbladeKiss6677 is right. Go see her version [even if it's got some punctuation difficulties ;) ] Oh, and virtual, you've been saying over several songs from Dark Light that the melodies are shit, but why? (No offense, just curious.)

"loves our shadow on the wall
with the face of God" (I here "a shadow" but eh)

Remember, this is HIM folks - tales of true love, wherein those involved are often portrayed as becoming one. Love binds them - thus "our" - and love takes on "the face of God" since it practically acquires divine status uniting two beings.

Further proof of the "fusion" symbolism:
"You dream what I'm dreaming
and see what I'm seeing"
&
"I find myself to be lost
in the arms of your fate"

Take note, the "lost" theme returns:
"Labrynth in the shape of a heart
loves secret architecture"
indicating that the "becoming one" confuses Man as humans are essentially (philosophically) forever alone.

What's really tricky is the "love as a shadow" part - it can have SO many interpretations... [Blows my mind... sorry for the verbosity :'( ]

I have a loose interpretation of this song to share, I wonder if anybody agrees with me. My friend and I have discussed this; she's currently studying witchcraft (the real thing, not some fad) and reckons a lot of this album can be related to some ideas in that. Basically:

The idea is that although often love is viewed as selflessness, in reality it causes one to become more selfish and less spiritual. As though romantic love is a false idol, in a sense. So in this song "I'd kill to share your pain and sell my soul for you just to say" demonstrates how the speaker is willing to do amoral things purely for love, and the idea of selling his soul shows how little spirituality there really is in love. Likewise, "Love's our shadow on the wall with the face of God", I think represents how although the couple believe their love to be equal to a religion or spirituality, in actuality it is merely a shadow. It has the face of God for this reason: they view it as a religion and in doing so actually are neglecting real spirituality and morality.

Just so ya know, personally I'm agnostic but I think a lot of the album has some love versus spirituality themes in it. All very interesting. I'd love to hear Valo's inspiration to see how far off the mark I am!

Silverdew, truly hadn't thought of that. Even if I don't agree with all of it, some of it does ring true: a song is the reflection of the writer; since Valo is getting older, he must be getting into a more psychological approach to love rather than a "hormonal" one, so it's entirely credible to read such a divestment into the song.

A lot of people don't like HIM because they sing about love and death and that's pretty much it. Personally, I love their music. They're is so much more to love than "I love you" or "I hate you" and they prove that in the lyrics.

And I believe this song is about lust.

Plain a simple. He is in love with her body, but thinks she is like a demon. Full of nothing but deception and torturous ideas... and he knows it, but just wants her so bad.

Umm... The Drummers Angel.... How exactly do you take this song to be about lust?

I think it's about wanting someone to tell you that they love you unconditionally, even if they don't mean it and are just saying it to make you feel loved.
Hence "love's our shadow on the wall" (the two embrace, and sure, this could be sex, or whatever), "with the FACE of God" (God represents unconditional love, and "face" is a mask, and masks are false and can be removed).

I sort of agree with hotsoupwoman but I do think there is lust involved. He really wants this girl but somehow it can't work (maybe due to there only being physical attachments between them)

I'd kill to share you pain
(please let me)
And sell my soul for you just to say
Love's name in vein
Again and again

Saying love's name in vain? She is stating that she loves him in order to have sex with him, although she doesn't really love him. That's how I see it. Could obviously be wrong though. HIM songs are rather complicated. Great song though

well wut sticks out at me the most is,

sell my soul for you just to say:

I dream what you're dreaming
and feel what you're feeling
loves our shadow on the wall
with the face of God

or loves name in vein again and again

idk wut loves name in vein is if its defferent from the verse above, but i think hes using a way to measure just wut hed do for this person. in the literal interpretation anyways. people say theyd do anything for a person but the truth is, most wouldnt sell their souls for someone if they really had to face that decision. hes saying he would. hes breaking the boundries of sacrafice of not only dying, but facing eternal damnation just 2 be with someone. but he is athiest so it could have a different meaning unless he really is just using it as a comparison. chances are it has a double meaning which im still hazy about

one little note that ill add is:

Love's name in vain. as in saying god damnit. well that is literally saying god damn it. he could be telling God to damn his soul. but the shadow on the wall line is the key i think. im not sure. this is a lose interpretation tho. or picking a different type of love for his sould then what God wants for everyone, therefore the gift of love he is given is in vain. for both God and hiself since the person choses to go 2 hell for the one he loves in his heart rather then choosing God in his heart. just adding thoughts to the pool

k last post. sorry i keep getting more thoughts. to put all of what i said simply, love is powerful enough to cause him to lose his soul. bottom line, love is destructive as well. or maybe hes in competition with someones heart. jesus died for the person he talks about, so she might get all religious on him. hes saying hed not only die but go to HELL for her. quite powerful in that sense.
