Lyrics for Build God, Then We'll Talk as interpreted by ADimeADexter

Build God, Then We'll Talk Lyrics
It's these substandard motels on the (lalalalala) corner of 4th and Fremont Street.
Appealing only because they are just that un-appealing
Any practiced catholic would cross themselves upon entering.
The rooms have a hint of asbestos and maybe just a dash of formaldehyde,
And the habit of decomposing right before your very (lalalala) eyes.

Along with the people inside
What a wonderful charicature of intimacy
Inside, what a wonderful charicature of intimacy

Tonight tenants range from: a lawyer and a virgin
Accessorizing with a rosary tucked inside her lingerie
She's getting a job at the firm come Monday.
The Mrs. will stay with the cheating attorney
moonlighting aside, she really needs his money.
Oh, wonderful charicature of intimacy.

Yeah (Yeah)

And not to mention, the constable, and his proposition, for that "virgin"
Yes, the one the lawyer met with on "strictly business"
as he said to the Mrs. Well, only hours before,
after he had left, she was fixing her face in a compact.
There was a terrible crash (There was a terrible crash)
Between her and the badge
She spilled her purse and her bag, and held a "purse" of a different kind.

Along with the people inside
What a wonderful charicature of intimacy
Inside, what a wonderful charicature of intimacy

There are no raindrops on roses and girls in white dresses.
It's sleeping with roaches and taking best guesses
At the shade of the sheets and before all the stains
And a few more of your least favorite things.

Raindrops on roses and girls in white dresses
It's sleeping with roaches and taking best guesses
At the shade of the sheets and before all the stains
And a few more of your least favorite things.

Inside, what a wonderful charicature of intimacy
Inside, what a wonderful charicature of intimacy

Raindrops on roses and girls in white dresses
It's sleeping with roaches and taking best guesses
At the shade of the sheets and before all the stains
And a few more of your least favorite things.

Raindrops on roses and the girls in white dresses
And the sleeping with the roaches and the taking best guesses
At the shade of the sheets and before all the stains
And a few more of your least favorite things

"There are no
Raindrops on roses and girls in white dresses
It's sleeping with roaches and taking best guesses
At the shade of the sheets before all the stains
And a few more of your least favorite things"

is definately a play on "These Are A Few Of My Favorite Things"

Also I love how the singer ennunciates the words... I feel it makes it more clear and you pay attention to the words more than usual.

In the booklet under these lyrics, it has like a continuaton of the lyrics. & I got all excited that the cd version would have that actually in the song. & it doesn't =[
Anyway, I love the whole story of this song.
& the play off of "Favorite Things" is amazing.

My guess would be that they are commenting on how society has lost its innocence and how nothing seems to be pure anymore.

well it looks like the "virgin" had two appointments in this substandard motel. and she was paid for both. she got a job at the firm from the attorney. the "purse of a different kind" is most probably referring to a sum of money the constable offered her.

Well, right after the "purse of a different kind" thing in the booklet, it says,
"And here is where he entertains that proposition:
arrested on possession."

so, maybe it's a 'drug' kind of thing...

I think the lawyer and the "virgin" have anal intercourse, since if you read the booklet thingie, they added extra words, something along the lines of "making love, but what you wouldnt want to happen but.you.get.the.picture" and just how sleezy this motel is.

Alright... It's Obvious Enough That everyone who posted before me are total "Scene" Idiots who cant get a song meaning with the lyrics right in their faces.

This particular song is about: A hooker ! (Caricature of intimacy)

They set up the lyrics to tell a story about the routine a hooker goes through on a usual night.. but this one happens to be The night she got caught.
"Tonight tenants range from a lawyer and a virgin" (keyword Tonight)
"Moonlighting aside, she really needs his money
Oh, What a wonderful caricature of intimacy. yeah"-Moonlighting :To work at another job, often at night, ( "what a wonderful caricature of intimacy")in addition to one's full-time job."( "what a wonderful caricature of intimacy")= Hooker.

Purse of a different kind = Black book. black book: a little note pad often used to write down names of clientel, or important dates and times. " Along with The people inside "

"There are no
Raindrops on roses and girls in white dresses
It's sleeping with roaches and taking best guesses
At the shade of the sheets before all the stains
And a few more of your least favorite things"- Textbook lyrics for a sad life...

The terrible crash is when the cops came in and busted her...

The end.

Hey, AaronBrown, way to judge people you don't even know. Especially by saying they're stupid 'scene' kids, cause saying that makes you so much better.THAT MAKES YOU COOL. pssh...

Anyway... I'm gonna add on to what I said before because in the booklet after the purse of a different kind it says:
And here is where he entertains that proposition:
arrested on posession
or
(now if this were you)

Think of what you wouldn't want to happen.

They ended up... well, making love isn't exactly what I'm looking for. But. You. Get. The. Picture.

I still think it's drugs she has, but he gives her a choice. Either he arrests her for posession of drugs, or she has to sleep with him. And that's why it's not exactly making love.

Man, you guys are mean. Feel free to tear this apart, as you're all so want to do.

It's not just a "caricature of intimacy," it's a caricature, period. The "virgin" isn't really a virgin at all and is willing to set up the guy she's sleeping with, the upstanding lawyer is cheating on his wife, and the loving wife is willing to stay with her husband for the money he brings in(The Mrs. will stay with the cheating attorney, Moonlighting aside, she really needs his money)

The "virgin" set up a deal with the constable to bust the lawyer(be it for the "virgin" is a hooker or just for drugs, is still up for discussion..aparently). After all the sex, the virgin is 'fixing her face' and the constable busts in. It may be a suprise, or intentional, but the virgin has drugs on her(I agree with a 'purse of a different kind' being drugs)

It can be both, guys. A hooker setting up the lawyer for lesser charges. And contrary to what some may think, two crimes CAN happen at the same time.

I'm pretty sure it's best guesses. Even though he comes in singing 'shade...' at the same time, it sounds like best guesses to me.

Roaches as in sleezy cheapass motels have roaches and their sheets are shitty and stained///hence the stain part.

Here are also some things to think about.

The lawyer offered the "virgin" money and a job at his firm if she slept with him.
(She's getting a job at the firm come Monday.)

Also, the word purse has 2 definitions.
1. A woman's bag for carrying keys, a wallet, and other personal items; a handbag.
2. A sum of money collected for performing an action or offered as a prize.

So maybe when they are saying "held a purse of a different kind" They are referring to the second definition which could be the money the lawyer gave to her for sleeping with him.

And since she was given money for sleeping with him, it could be considered prositution.. hence the constable part.

.. and if that's the case then she really wasn't a hooker.. the constable just assumed she was since she was given money.

But honestly, who knows for sure. That's just some things to think about.

That is very true a purse can mean "A sum of money collected for performing an action or offered as a prize" but it does say in the song "And held a 'purse' of a DIFFERENT kind" which would mean not the usual purse of money. Because of the lyrics not in the song but written in the booklet (definitly an older uncut version of the lyrics) "arrested on possesion" would imply that the girl in the song would be arrested for drugs not prostitution. Because she is fixing her makeup in the "compact" not watching where shes walking, the "terrible crash" I believe means she runs into him leaving the hotel, accidently dropping her purse. Why would the "constable" arrest her for having money? I think therefore, it would have to be drugs.

The uncut lyrics also include another plot of the constable giving her the proposition of either being arrested on possesion or having sex with him.
the lyrics being..

"And here is where he entertains that proposition:
arrested on possession
Or.
(now if this were you)
think of what you wouldnt want to happen.
They ended up...well, making love isn't exactly what I'm looking for.
But. You. Get. The. Picture."

krishnaaaaaa is right in saying raindrops on roses is a chuck palahniuk reference i mean what else could it be? brillant lyrics just brillant

bash it all u want its my interpretation and it does seem to make sense...

the virgin is applying for a job and the lawyer uses her and takes her to a motel. they have sex. she's so pure she has a cross with her panties. she's the one who really needs the money. then a cop comes in after the lawyer leaves. she has drugs and tells her have sex with me or be arrested.

"They ended up...well, making love isn't exactly what I'm looking for.
But. You. Get. The. Picture."

thats why she becomes the "virgin" instead of just virgin.

there's a diffrence between making love and sex.

I partly agree with AaronBrownIm not sure if the girl is a hooker by profession because she's trying to get a job at the firm...she has sex with the lawyer for that position and a bit of cash. I think theyre using the song to mainly describe how low even respectable people can be and how filthy we all really are no matter what our jobs are or how we present ourselfs to other people in public. Then it focuses on that girl and after she sleeps with a few people she gets busted by the cops (There was a terrible crash between her and the BADGE) and i think the purse of a different kind was her kissing up to the cops or maybe just a different type of facial expression...such as pursing ones lips...
